I don’t think I’ll be able to close my sleep sofa with this on it – can I store it in the original box and remove it as needed for guests? Will the smell return every time it’s removed from the box?

It’s difficult to get a topper back in its original box since they’re vacuum-sealed shut. However, you can fold it up for storage. You could even consider buying a vacuum sealer for more efficient storage.
Once the topper has had time to air out, the offgassing will pass.

You can buy a Full mattress topper and cut 5 inches off the length to perfectly match your sofa bed. Since these don’t come with covers, they’re very easy to trim to size.
