Our IKEA Haugsvar

Can you imagine buying a new hybrid mattress for less than $500? What if we told you that, amongst the other affordable pieces of furniture it sells, Ikea can also make that happen? Today we’re going to talk about a very affordable bed: the Haugsvar mattress manufactured and sold by Ikea.

About Ikea

Talking about Ikea is something that could literally take us days. If you’re from Europe, not hearing about Ikea is nothing short of impossible. Being one of the global leaders in terms of DIY furniture that can be assembled and is sold at a really convenient price, the Swedish brand Ikea manufactures and sells almost anything you can find in a home. From plates to bar stools and from storage boxes to beds, Ikea has it all. And, believe it or not, they have no less than 14 mattresses that they currently sell under their own brand.

Shipping, Unboxing, and Offgassing

Ikea is an international company, which means that it serves plenty of different locations on the globe. If you are from the US and want to purchase an Ikea mattress, know that they ship their products to all 48 continental states. Products that are heavier than 70 pounds (and mattresses included) can’t be shipped to Alaska and Hawaii.

The Haugsvar bed will be rolled up and sealed with a vacuum before it is delivered to your doorstep. Of course, if you don’t wait to wait for the delivery man, you can always visit an Ikea store and purchase the product yourself and arrange for transportation if you have your own personal car. There is no option for white glove delivery. However, the delivery service does ensure that your mattress is placed in a room inside the house, even if they can’t remove the old mattress.

If you place an order online, you will be given an approximate delivery date, but that doesn’t guarantee that you will receive the mattress on that day. It takes about two business days for your order to be processed, but it may take up to five more business days for you to actually receive your Haugsvar mattress.

You are also likely to notice a faint smell when first removing the Haugsvar bed from its original packaging. That’s perfectly natural because of the polyfoam used in the construction of the bed. The manufacturer recommends airing the mattress in a well-ventilated room for about 72 hours, but chances are the smell will face away much faster than that.

Initial Impressions

Straight out of the box, the Haugsvar seems like a decent mattress considering what you pay for it. The cover is made from a combination of polyester and rayon which feels very breathable and soft to the touch, although it’s clearly not as soft as other covers we’ve seen on hybrid mattresses.

Now, Ikea advertises the Haugsvar bed as being a hybrid, but we’d classify it as an innerspring since it does have a rather thin layer of foam above the pocketed coils. It could definitely use more cushioning and with a firmness rating of 5 out of 10, this surely feels more close to a 7.

Construction

The Haugsvar mattress sports a total height of 11 inches that are divided almost evenly amongst the two main materials that are used to make this bed: foam and coils. The first layer of the mattress is made from high-density polyfoam, which makes the mattress feel a little bit firmer when you first apply pressure on it. But since this is foam, after all, the mattress definitely gets more comfortable the more nights you actually sleep on it. However, should it maintain as much of this firmness in the long term, it is a great mattress for back sleepers who experience back problems.

The next layer in this mattress is made from conventional polyfoam, and it serves as a transition layer, but also as a pressure point relief one. The density of the foam might not be the best choice if you are a side sleeper, as you are likely to feel pressure in the hips and shoulder regions if you buy this bed. But when putting these two upper layers together, you definitely get a mattress that’s very good at maintaining a cool sleeping environment, so it will definitely work for hot sleepers.

The base layer is comprised of individually-wrapped coils that give the bed bounce and the sleeper support. The space between the coils further facilitates airflow up to a point where this might actually be the most breathable low-budget hybrid mattress we’ve seen. Motion transfer is also pretty decent, indicating that this could be a good bed for couples.

Available Sizes

Oddly enough, Ikea mattresses aren’t available in all the sizes you’re accustomed to seeing with other mattress brands. The Haugsvar mattress is only available in a Twin, a Full, Queen, and King size. Each of these four sizes is available in a firm and a medium-firm version.

Heat Transfer

The Haugsvar mattress isn’t a champion in all categories, but it definitely does really well at the heat dissipation chapter. The foam that’s used in this mattress is very cool to the touch and, when combined with the space available between the pocketed coils, you get a mattress that doesn’t absorb that much body heat, but also facilitates whatever heat eventually ends trapped inside it in getting out of the bed.

Maintenance, Protection, Care & Warranty

What’s interesting is that for such an inexpensive mattress, you benefit from a full year of free sleep trial. Should you decide to ask for a refund within 365 days, you will be reimbursed for the entire cost of the bed minus any delivery fees you might have paid. Take note that you can’t return a mattress that has been visibly damaged or stained.

The Haugsvar mattress is accompanied by a very generous 25-year limited warranty. The company will be the one to decide if your mattress will be repaired or replaced. In the event of you wanting to replace the Haugsvar which may no longer be available, the company will give you a similar replacement mattress.

Cost

The Haugsvar mattress is one of the least expensive hybrid mattresses that you’ll ever come across. The prices for this mattress will depend on the size that you wish to purchase. The Twin mattress costs $299, the price for the Full-sized mattress is $379, the Queen model costs $399, and the King version of this bed is priced at $549.

Price Level: $

$$$ $600-$700
$$$$ $800+

Reviews and Feedback

Even if this is a budget mattress and perhaps doesn’t have the quality of one that costs $1,000 for a Queen-size bed, customers are overall very happy with this purchase. A lot of people have complimented the Haugsvar mattress on its appearance, as this is the aspect most positively rated out of all. The quality of the product is excellent when compared to the price, as buyers have often stated that this mattress has a great value for the money.

While there are a few complaints about the Haugsvar mattress, the scarcity and individuality of each tale is a sign that most of them are related to personal sleeping preferences and don’t necessarily suggest that there is something wrong with the bed. However, we did notice a few people complaining about how the sides collapsed a few months after buying this mattress, which might be an indicator that this bed could use better edge support. Not to worry, you have a full year of sleep trial and 25 years of warranty to keep you covered.

Who We Recommend the Haugsvar Mattress For

In spite of its low price, the Haugsvar mattress can actually serve a variable number of sleepers. It is a good bed for those who often tend to sleep hot. It is a budget-friendly version of mattresses that tend to cost thousands of dollars (it might just be the least expensive hybrid bed we’ve seen in a while), so it’s perfect for those looking to save money.

The firmness of the mattress makes it a good choice for back sleepers who tend to experience a lot of pain when they wake up the next morning. It’s also a great addition to a guest bedroom because of its good price-to-quality ratio.

Our Final Verdict

If you are a side sleeper looking for a soft mattress with excellent pressure point relief and a really softcover, the Haugsvar is not for you. However, if you are a back sleeper who often ends up fighting their way through the bed to reach a position where the back doesn’t hurt anymore, the Haugsvar might be straight up your alley.

Being one of the most affordable hybrids that money can currently buy, the Haugsvar mattress is pretty much what you’d expect for a mattress within this price range. It combines two layers of foam and one layer of pocketed coils in order to give you a breathable mattress that’s suited for couples (thanks to the positive performance in terms of motion isolation). It is also a wise investment for those who might need a mattress for their guest bedroom.
