Nobody likes to sleep hot. In fact, your body needs to drop its temperature just slightly before you can enter REM sleep. If you have trouble with hot sleeping on your current mattress, it’s a good idea to see if you can correct the problem before you focus on replacing it.

One such product you may come across in this quest is the cooling pad by eLuxury. I got mine a couple of weeks ago, and I’ve been testing it out extensively to help you decide if it could work for you. So, without further adieu, let’s dive in.

eLuxury Cooling Pad: Out of the Box Initial Thoughts

During our unboxing, you got the chance to see how to assemble this product. It’s pretty easy as it goes on like a fitted sheet.

I like that eLuxury is veteran owned, and their products are made 100 percent in the USA. This pillowtop is 1 ½ inches thick and filled with hypoallergenic Revoloft fiber. Its double needle baffle box stitching traps the fill inside the pockets to prevent shifting, and the outside of the product is very soft to the touch.

The elastic skirt provides a snug fit and is capable of accommodating mattresses up to 18 inches thick. If you have a relatively thin mattress, the fit will be a little loose, but you should be able to tuck the skirt underneath the mattress without any major issues.

What Sets the eLuxury Cooling Pad Apart?

This product is different than others I have tried in that you can immediately feel the difference. When you touch the cover, you’ll notice it feels much cooler than surrounding materials. We’ll get into detail regarding how this works here in a moment.

I liked that this product also helps protects against bed sores. It is very soft and comfortable to lie on. If your mattress sleeps hot and is a little too firm for your liking, you can kill two birds with one stone in the purchase of this product.

Cooling- How It Works

Since the main highlight of this product is that it’s a cooling pad, let’s take a look at the results of our heat transfer testing. One of the first things you’ll notice about this product is that it’s very cool to the touch. This is due to the low heat capacity in eLuxury’s proprietary cooler blend, which makes up 21 percent of the cover.

If you want a better understanding of how heat capacity works, let’s liken it to a metal versus a wooden spoon:

• When at the same room temperature, the metal spoon will feel cooler even though, if you were to measure both temperatures, they would read the same.
• The metal spoon, with its lower heat capacity, draws heat from your body more quickly. The wooden spoon, on the other hand, takes much longer to reach equilibrium.
• When given enough time, both would max out in terms of how much heat could be transferred into the respective spoons.

Considering the entire volume of the cooling pad absorbs your body heat, there are variables that make a difference in how you’ll experience this product. For example, the longer you stay in bed, the longer you’ll experience the mattress at equilibrium. Furthermore, the more you weigh, the quicker equilibrium will be reached.

Putting It to the Test

I lied on the product for 30 minutes in a controlled environment and watched as it cooled back down to room temperature. Based on my experience of testing nearly 50 sleep surfaces, this process takes around 10 minutes.

It took my mattress on its own five minutes, but the cooling pad took 15 minutes to return to room temperature. This is 66 percent longer than the mattress alone. I tested it again with a memory foam pad beneath it, and it still took around the same amount of time to cool down to room temperature.

But isn’t the cooling pad supposed to make it cool down faster?

From an engineering standpoint, this shows the cooling pad does what it’s designed to do. The material’s low heat capacity means that it absorbs your body heat more quickly, hence the cool feeling even though it’s actually the same temperature as surrounding materials on the sleep surface.

However, when I remove myself from the sleep surface, the proprietary cooling blend has absorbed more of my body heat, thus requiring more time to cool off. I never woke up sweating while using this product, but, looking around online, I noticed complaints about the mattress pad sleeping hot.

I wanted to point this out because, based on your sleep habits and body composition, you may or may not agree, so these reviews can be misleading when you don’t fully understand how it works. It all boils down to this:

• If you don’t weigh much and sleep around seven to eight hours per night, I don’t think you’ll have any problems with hot sleeping.
• If you carry a lot of weight and/or tend to sleep nine hours or more, which is true for about five percent of people, you may experience the opposite effect.

Back to the Bedsores

We had mentioned that the eLuxury cooling pad is effective at preventing the development of bedsores. However, with a better understanding for how the cooling properties work, keep in mind this product isn’t really a go-to for using for long periods of time considering the compromise this creates in heat transfer capability. If hot sleeping doesn’t bother you, by all means, enjoy its capability to prevent bed sores.

Comfort- How Does It Feel?

So, now that you have an idea of what’s inside, let’s talk about the feel. I like the use of the cluster fibers as they trap air. This creates a longer lasting shape and a slightly plusher feel.

The pad on its own doesn’t drastically alter the feel of your mattress, but, if it’s medium to firm, you will likely notice a slightly plusher firmness. This can be a great feature for people who don’t carry much weight since it can be difficult to engage with the layers of firmer sleep products. It can also prove beneficial for side sleepers since the weight in the hips and shoulders can cause painful pressure points.

The mattress I’m using is firm, and you can see here that the cooling pad does provide a degree of contour. Overall, this product offers a slightly cushiony feel and works well to fill in the gaps of your unique body curves.

Firmness

We touched on the fact that this product will plush up a medium to firm mattress, so let’s take a look at just how much. When I stand on the mattress on its own, I sink in right about 6 inches. This puts it at a pretty standard medium firm. When I add the eLuxury cooling pad, my sinkage is 7 ¼ inches.

This is more indicative of medium soft. While it won’t add a lot of plushness, it does provide a little. If you want to increase the plush feeling more dramatically, you might consider the supplemental purchase of a memory foam topper. Motion Transfer

I used my cooling mattress pad on an innerspring mattress which are known for a high degree of bounce. This can be disruptive for sleep partners. However, you can see in our video review above that, with the pad in place, much of the motion is isolated to the point of impact. Despite this, I don’t have any trouble moving around or getting in and out of bed. Because of this, I think this could be a good product for sleep partners who like a plusher feel.

Maintenance, Protection, Care & Warranty

This product is machine washable only for front load washing machines. If yours has a center agitator, you’ll need to either spot clean or take it to the laundromat. I used mine in conjunction with a mattress protector to further aid in keeping it looking good. This can be done without compromising on cooling capability.

Durability Expectations

Your eLuxury cooling pad will be placed at the very top of your mattress, and this is where the most wear and tear takes place. You do have a reasonable expectation of good durability, though:

• It’s stain and moisture resistant
• Cluster fiber goes through an extra engineering process that creates balls of fiber that retain shape longer
• You do get a one year warranty to protect against manufacturing-related issues

Best of all, since the topper absorbs the direct impact of your body, it adds a layer of protection for your mattress.

Conclusion

My overall thoughts on this product are positive. When given the right circumstances, I think you’ll be happy with the product’s ability to keep you sleeping cool, but it may not be a good fit if you weigh more than two hundred fifty pounds or are known to stay in bed longer than eight hours.

On the other hand, I think it offers promising features for sleep partners and can be the perfect touch for anyone who wants just a slightly plusher sleep surface. It’s certified safe according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission and is used in various four and five star hotels including Marriott, Omni, Courtyard and Fairfield, so I think that tells you something about the overall comfort and quality of the product.

I think it could be a great purchase if you’re looking to:

• Restore and cool down an old mattress
• Soften up a firm sleep surface
• Provide a little extra contour to reduce pressure points.
