A Word on the Company and Their Product

Brentwood is dedicated to encouraging the reduction of our carbon footprint, and that’s why they source high-quality materials and handcraft their products from start to finish in California using environmentally responsible processes.

This product is one that features memory foam, and this is one of the primary reasons the mattress is able to conform so well with the body. There are many types of memory foam on the market, but they all have something in common. The materials are visco elastic, and this allows them to soften under heat and pressure. This means, as you lay on the mattress, the more it begins to conform with your body and offer that increased point elasticity that can help if you find yourself waking up in pain often. So, now that you have a better understanding of the Brentwood brand and type of product they offer, let’s review some details that make all the difference when it comes to making a purchasing decision.

Starting at the Top

The first material you’re going to come into contact with is the New Zealand wool found in the cover, and this offer a number of benefits. Wool responds very well to cleaning as moisture makes the fibers swell and release dirt, and it’s naturally flame retardant. You can also enjoy the fact that it has good breathability, durability, elasticity, and overall resilience. I found it really comfortable to sleep on. It also utilizes blend of polyester and bamboo, and this helps to further soften the feel and keep the sleeping surface cool.

The cover encompasses three layers, and the total product thickness is 13 inches. The average thickness for a mattress is only ten inches, and I found this gave it a very prominent presence in my bedroom. Furthermore, thicker mattresses are ideal for heavier people. In fact, Brentwood recommends this product for any individual weighing 400 pounds or less.

However, considering the low density of the memory foam comfort layer, The Sleep Judge would recommend this product for those weighing 250 pounds or less to increase your durability expectation.

Digging in Deeper

Right beneath the cover is three and a half inches of gel memory foam. The gel beads you can see in the material work to absorb body heat and help you sleep cool. While this can be a good solution for memory foam’s tendency to sleep hot, the effectiveness of this deterrent only goes so far. The beads do have an absorption capacity. Once they have absorbed what they’re capable of, the bed will begin to heat up. If you sleep really hot, you may want to look for a product that’s gel-infused.

The primary concern I have about the memory foam layer is that it features a density of 3 pounds per cubic foot. Due to the way it’s manufactured, memory foam density is a little bit different when it comes to the density to durability ratio. In this case, you want your density to be within the four to five pcf range. It’s too soon to tell, but this could indicate a lack in durability. However, as of now, the memory foam is very comfortable and conforms well with my body, and at the price, it makes for a very viable option.

Next, we find a 2 inch Airluxe ventilated layer that’s designed to help the mattress breathe and aid the gel beads in keeping you cool. Finally, you’re supported by a seven and a half inch layer of therapeutic foam. The two bottom layers each feature a density of 1.5 pcf. Since it’s not memory foam, the durability expectations are different, and anything from 1.5 to 1.8 pcf indicates good durability, so you can expect good durability in the majority of this combined product.

A Look at the Cypress Bamboo Gel 13 Firmness

This product features a medium firmness level. The indentation load deflection, which represents firmness, is 10 pounds in the memory foam and 30 in the other two layers. Fifty is very firm and 12 is very soft when considering the overall ILD of the combined unit, so this firmness level is reflective of medium firmness which accommodates most sleepers. However, if you do want to make it a little firmer or plusher, you’re in luck. Brentwood will provide a complimentary topper to get the firmness right for you.

To demonstrate firmness in a way that’s easier to see when you can’t lay on the mattress for yourself, I stood on this product using my kitchen broom to help you gauge what is level. Standing in the middle of the mattress, I applied my 130 pounds to a 9 by 7 inch area, and I sunk in 6 ½ inches. This is pretty typical for medium firmness compared with other products I’ve tested.

Is Medium Firmness Right for Me?

While medium firmness is right for the majority of customers, there is still the minority to take into consideration. There are a couple of things to consider to determine if this will be best for you. For starters, if you carry a lot of weight, a firmer product is usually better able to offer the support you need. On the other end of the spectrum, those who are underweight may need a plusher product in order to provide them the cushion they need.

Another thing you should consider is your sleeping position. The following chart walks you through the common positions and the firmness levels that best accommodate them:

Minimal Off Gassing

Off gassing occurs when volatile organic compounds are released from newly-manufactured materials, and there are thousands of products that are affected. From tennis shoes and paint to new cars and more, this is only a temporary effect of the chemical processes that take place during manufacturing. While mattresses are known to release VOC’s, some do so more than others. When I unboxed this product, there was minimal off gassing. If off gassing is something that particularly bothers you, I would suggest you let it air out for a few hours before you sleep on it.

Support and Comfort Expectations

I’ve always enjoyed the unique comfort of memory foam since the first time I laid on a memory foam bed in a mall in 2004. Therefore, I wasn’t surprised that I enjoyed the level of comfort that this material is capable of providing. When combined with the natural materials found in the cover, you can’t help but start to feel increasingly comfortable as the memory foam conforms with your body.

In my experience, the 7 ½ inch base was able to provide adequate support for the plusher memory foam in the comfort layer. However, keep in mind that, if you weigh more than 400 pounds, your experience will differ as this mattress is not designed to meet your support needs.

Product Edge Support

As with most all-foam products, edge support can be a little lacking. I was able to completely compress all layers of the product with my hand, and, when I sat down on the edge near the middle of the mattress, I sunk in quite a bit. However, I didn’t bottom out. When I took it to the edge, the mattress compressed much more. When I laid on the edge of the product, I was adequately supported and didn’t get the feeling like I was going to fall off.

While edge support is a little lacking, I’ve seen other foam products that sunk in significantly more, so I think this product did a pretty good job in comparison. Furthermore, the product bounces back quickly when you release pressure. I found it really easy to move around on this mattress, something that can sometimes be difficult to achieve when sleeping on visco-elastic memory foam.

Motion Isolation

Some mattresses are really springy, and this can prove very disruptive if you have a sleeping partner. Whether you’re trying to get to sleep or have started to drift off, few things are more frustrating than being interrupted when your partner moves around or gets in and out of bed. However, I didn’t suspect this to be a big issue with the Brentwood Bamboo Gel mattress since it does have a layer of memory foam on top.

To test it out, I used two 20 lb. medicine balls. I placed one on one side of the mattress and dropped another from eye level on the opposite side. Whether I held the ball far away or very close to the resting ball, the dropped ball had minimal effect on its resting counterpart. The motion isolation was as I expected with this product, and I feel it can be a good solution if you sleep with a restless partner. In these cases, however, I’d consider a larger option such as a king or California king to allow more room for these movements.

Exceptional Temperature Regulation

It’s clear that Brentwood took time and consideration into providing a cool-sleep solution with the gel foam and ventilated layer. So, I put it to the test using my thermal imaging camera. For each product I test, I lay on it for 30 minutes in a 64 degree Fahrenheit room. The average time it has taken the mattresses I’ve tested so far to return to room temperature is about 10 minutes. However, I was surprised to find it only took four and a half minutes for the Brentwood Bamboo Gel to return to normal.

It is worth noting that, since the product contains gel beads, they could reach their heat absorption capacity if you sleep really hot. In this case, you may find the bed to heat up more. However, I found the mattress to breathe very well, allowing me to sleep deeply and without disruption.

Maintenance, Protection, Care, and Warranty

The investment in a mattress is a significant one, and it’s important that you do everything you can to make sure yours lasts as long as possible. So, let’s take a moment to talk about product care. The Cypress Bamboo Gel 13 features a 25 year warranty. The cover is able to be removed and spot-cleaned. However, if this doesn’t work in your case, Brentwood will sell you a replacement cover if that time ever comes. This can save you a ton if your cover becomes compromised but the layers beneath are still in great working condition. It’s like getting a fresh start on an old investment!

120 Night Sleep Trial and Returns

Brentwood offers a 120 night sleep guarantee. They ask that you sleep on it for at least 30 days to allow time for adjustments. During the remaining 90 nights, if you decide your new mattress isn’t the right one for you, they’ll send someone to pick it up and give you a 100% refund. Keep in mind that the trial only applies to items purchased directly on brentwoodhome.com with a limit of 2 items per year per household. Standard shipping costs will apply after that.

Sounds Good, But What’s the Cost?

If you’ve read this far, you’re likely considering the purchase of the Brentwood Cypress Bamboo Gel 13-inch mattress. However, you’re probably bracing for the impact of hearing the price. If you’re new to shopping for online mattresses, you’ll be pleased to know that Brentwood is able to minimize costs by shipping straight to your door. This enables them to bypass middleman markups and other unnecessary costs leading to a very reasonable cost for this mattress.

Considering the impressive cooling ability and quality of materials you’ll find within the cover, Brentwood is a great option to consider if you’re looking for point elasticity on a budget. Again, there is a bit of a compromise in the memory foam comfort layer when it comes to its low density, but you’re still getting a lot for for your money considering the very low cost.
