Beautyrest Heated Mattress Pad

Whether you need that extra heat for those chilly nights or just to soothe some pain that you have while you’re sleeping, heated mattress pads are always a handy product to have. Over the years, these pads have advanced in technology and are nothing like they used to be. Just a few short years ago, heating pads and blankets were made with bulky wires that were uncomfortable to sleep on. Today, these wires have become thinner and mattress pads, such as the Cotton Blend from Beautyrest, have become more comfortable. I was able to get my hands on one of these to test them out. Here’s what I have to say about it.

Breakdown Of The Beautyrest Cotton Blend Heated Mattress Pad

The Beautyrest Mattress Pad uses Secure Comfort technology, which has been specifically designed to eliminate as much Electromagnetic field emissions as it possibly can. The radiation caused by this varies in intensity and if exposed to too much of it, it can be harmful to your health. Lowering these emissions keeps you healthy and out of harm’s way.

This heated pad features 5 temperature control settings to ensure that you are exposed to your perfect comfort level. It also has a handy 10-hour auto-shutoff feature for those who may be forgetful in terms of remembering to shut it off. After 10-hours, it will turn itself off to avoid the risk of overheating and/or catching fire.

Each side of this product comes with its own controller so that you and your partner can both sleep comfortably on your own level of heat. Smaller sizes, such as double and lower, only come with one remote whereas the Queens and larger sizes come with two. It is suggested that those who have a heat intolerance do not use this product and the following should not use it as well:

  • Those who cannot operate the controls properly
  • Anyone who cannot properly decipher the directions
  • Individuals with poor circulation
  • Those with disabilities who may not be able to properly use the unit
  • Infants & small children

Features & Benefits

One of the first things that I noticed about the Beautyrest Heated Mattress pad was the controllers. The controllers on this are digital, meaning all you have to do is press the button of the number you want your heat setting at. It also has a preheat setting to ensure you’re getting into a nice warm bed rather than laying in it and waiting for it to heat up.

The dual controllers are great for couples who sleep at different temperatures. It works for my husband and I because in New York, this time of year can be chilly at night, but hot during the day. He likes to sleep with the windows open at night and it’s still a tad chilly, so I can heat up my side of the bed and he can leave his off. It’s a really convenient feature and one of my favorites.

The pad is extremely beneficial to those who may suffer from mild pain after a long day. If you’re the type of person whose pain is eased by heat, you’ll love this. You’ll be comforted by a steady heat all night long without being exposed to any hot spots, giving you the pain relief you need.

The Beautyrest pad is also rather beneficial to those who may be worried about leaving the product on. A lot of the older style pads and blankets were prone to catching fire if left on for too long from overheating, but this one is made to shut off after 10 hours no matter what. No need to worry about it burning holes in your bed.

Construction

The Beautyrest Mattress Pad is a 200 thread count, 60/40 cotton polyester blend. The top of it is soft to the touch, but the only issue I saw with construction was the wires inside. These wires seemed to be very thick and I could definitely notice them when I slept. The pad itself is a fitted sheet style, which is great for keeping it secure on the bed and locked in place. Unfortunately, if you have a mattress more than 17” deep, it’s going to be a tight fit. Unlike the other pads that I tested, There wasn’t much stretching to the skirt and it was a very tight fit.

When it comes to those digital controllers, they are connected by a pronged hookup on each side of the bed and require two outlets to plug into, like most heated mattress pads on the market. Each side plugs in, giving your partner the option to decide whether or not they want to use their side at all.

Setup Quick Tip:

Whether you choose to put the connectors at the foot or the head of the bed, setup is quick and easy. Connect the controllers to the connectors and run them down the side of your bed or under it. You NEVER want to stick the cords in between your box spring and mattress. You then simply plug the cords into your standard power supply on each side of the bed and it’s ready to go.

Heating Features

One of the first things that I like to do is test out how well the pads maintain their heating features. Each one of the controllers has 5 settings and a preheat setting. If you want to preheat the unit, simply hit the clearly labeled “preheat” button, a feature that a lot of the other controllers lack. Yes, they can preheat, but they don’t have a specific button for it. These pads are not meant to feel hot to the touch, rather, they give you a steady flow of heat throughout the night. I did notice that the heat stayed steady all night, as much as I could recall, and I did not notice any hot spots.

One other thing that I checked out was the 10-hour auto-shutoff feature. You can’t have a product with a safety feature like that malfunction, right? I left the unit on for the 10-hours and sure enough, it did shut off after the allotted time. As far as I could tell, all of the heating features of this mattress pad worked up to my expectations.

Comfort

The top of this mattress pad is constructed with a soft cotton blend. It is soft to the touch and once it’s heated, it is very comfortable to sleep on, in terms of heat features. Unfortunately, I did notice that the wires in this pad were much thicker than those of some of the other ones. This made it rather frustrating to sleep on because I could feel the wires. If you can get past that or it doesn’t bother you at all, then there won’t be anything about this product that you won’t enjoy.

During the night, I remained comfortably warm and once I was warm enough, I simply pushed the button to turn down the heat level. Now, since the pad is so tightly fit, you don’t have to worry about those uncomfortable wrinkles that may bunch up. The only thing you may feel are those pesky wires.

Protection

The mattress pad itself isn’t much of a protector when it comes to effectiveness against spills. Some of the other pads that were tested were water resistant and kind of doubled as a protector. This product is not water resistant, nor is is bed bug resistant or hypoallergenic. It’s main use is specifically for heating purposes and should not be used to protect your mattress from spills, leaks, or any other liquid or bug damage. So if you invested in a new mattress that you want to keep safe, I suggest another form of protection.

Maintenance, Care and Warranty

If you are unsure of how to care for your new mattress pad, this section is one that you’ll want to pay a little bit of attention to.

Maintenance

Keeping your Beautyrest Heated Mattress Pad maintained is very simple. One of the first basic rules of these products is to always turn them off when it’s not in use. Sure, it has the auto-shutoff, but it’s still a safe idea to unplug it from the outlet or turning it off to avoid racking up those electric bills. You also want to make sure that when you put your plugs away when the pad isn’t in use, that you don’t wrap the cords around the controls too tightly because it could damage them.

  • The product should also never be ironed
  • Never use dry cleaning liquid or bleach when washing

Care

Your pad may not be water resistant, but it can be washed, which is a huge plus for me. When you machine wash it, you should ensure that all of the plugs are disconnected. You should never put the cords in the washer. You can then place the whole textile part of the pad in the washing machine using warm water and a small amount of detergent. Run it on a gentle cycle and rinse with cool water and spin dry. You can see more detailed care instructions in the packet that comes with the product.

If you don’t trust your washing machine, you can always hand wash your product. You can place it in a tub of warm water and some mild detergent, soak it for a few minutes and gently work the mixture into the pad. You should never scrub or rub. You can then rinse with cold water until the suds are gone and then squeeze the water out without twisting it. You can then either put it in the dryer on low heat tumble or line dry it with the prongs facing down. Always ensure the product is completely dry before plugging it back in.

Warranty

Simmons gives you a 5 year manufacturer warranty with your product. If your product is found to be defective during the period of your warranty, they may replace or repair it at their discretion. If you have an issue with your product, you can call them or visit their website.

How Easy Are Returns

If you need to return your product because of a defect, you can simply use their website to fill out a warranty claim and they will then instruct you on how to return your product. If you need to return it to the party that you bought it from, you have 30-days to do so. You can return it for a refund, but the return shipping will be deducted from it.

Conclusion

After testing this product out for a few days, I can definitely say that I was satisfied with it for the most part. I love that it has the dual heat zones on the Queen size and larger. It’s perfect for those couples who just can’t agree on an ideal temperature. It’s definitely ideal for those who are prone to forgetting to shut it off. After 10-hours, it does it for you, but don’t rely on this all of the time as you never know if a product may malfunction. The fitted sheet is very helpful in keeping the pad in place, but those wires are just too thick for my liking. Maybe it won’t bother you as much as it did me. Overall, if you are someone who wants to keep yourself nice and toasty throughout the night, the Beautyrest Heated Mattress Pad is definitely an affordable option.
