What’s Inside?

Let’s get started by taking a look at what is inside of the Avocado mattress topper. It’s wrapped in an organic cotton cover with a fantastic canvas bottom that allows the topper to stay snugly in place. If you should ever need to explore the inside of the mattress, just use the convenient zipper along the bottom perimeter. So, after unzipping, what did we find?

Natural Latex Rubber

The Avocado features a 100% natural Dunlop latex rubber foam. It is made from harvested sources, and it’s a high-performance, eco-friendly, resilient, and durable material. This material also offers some pretty great temperature control features that exceed any petroleum-based, synthetic-blended, or polyurethane foam.

The latex in this topper is more earth-friendly than Talalay latex. Talalay requires chemical processing. This material is tree-tapped and is eco-INSTITUT certified, which means it’s tested for hazardous substances and materials by their manufacturer. Natural latex is much cooler and more antimicrobial than traditional memory foam. The one layer of latex without seams in this topper features D65 and a 14-19 ILD (Indentation Load Deflection). This is for the plush topper. The firm topper has a D75 rating and a 20-25 ILD. You don’t have to worry about breakdown over time because there are no seams to assist in this. There are also no chemical adhesives and no synthetic latex used. Learn more about densities here and ILD here.

Joma Wool

The top layer is actually built-in to the cover. It’s made from Joma® wool. There are quite a few benefits of this. First, it will wick away moisture from the mattress, keeping it smelling and feeling fresh. It also keeps you both cool and warm whenever needed. There are no additives in the wool and it’s scoured with a biodegradable detergent that meets all standards. It is then rinsed and steamed. This 0.1oz per square foot wool is crimped under the certified organic cotton ticking. The wool is also OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 Certified. What this is, is a uniform testing and certification system for all of the stages of textile production. It ensures that the product is free from harmful substances.

Avocado Top Cover

The cover of the Avocado features a very soft and luxurious finish. The cotton is breathable and made with a poly-blend 4-way stretch-knit. It is GOTS-Certified and comes in a very attractive natural color. In order to keep it from slipping and sliding all over the place, the bottom is made with an organic cotton canvas. The bottom and top of the topper feature a hand-stitched green tape edge with a brass zipper.

Features & Benefits

Now that we have broken down the inside of the mattress topper, let’s talk about how it performed.

Comfort

In terms of comfort, I am quite happy to report that I woke up generally pain-free. There were still some sore spots, but it’s not something that a mattress topper can fix anytime soon. I noticed some relief from my back pain, and I wasn’t as stiff as I usually was first thing in the morning. I was really impressed with the bounce-back of the latex. It doesn’t suck you in like what a traditional memory foam does. It does a great job of making it feel like you aren’t even pushing down on the topper.

Firmness & Sinkage

I have the plush version of the topper, which is meant to soften up a hard mattress. There’s also a firm option that is meant to make your mattress more firm. If you’re a stomach sleeper, you’ll benefit more from the firm option. The plush option is best for side or back sleepers. The plush definitely created a cloud-like feel when I am on it. When it comes to sinking in, there’s no such thing. It only conforms to the body part putting the most pressure on the one spot. So if you’re sitting on it, it’s going to be your bottom. If you’re laying on it, it’s going to evenly support you in all of the right places.

Motion Transfer Reduction

One of the most noteworthy benefits of natural latex is that there’s generally no motion transfer. This is due in part to how dense the inside of the topper is. When both my husband and I are on it, neither one of us can feel movement. As we speak, my dog is rolling around on top of it, and I can’t feel that he’s doing it. There is absolutely no motion transfer. Obviously, if you were jumping up and down on one side, your partner is going to feel something. Normal movements during sleep are pretty much obsolete to the partner. In a good topper, you want to experience low to no motion transfer, but you don’t want to feel like you’re being sucked in or stuck in one spot. This is a huge issue with toppers that are made with traditional memory foam. Since the Avocado isn’t made with traditional memory foam, it doesn’t suck you in and you feel nothing from one side to the other.

Breathability

When you sleep, an ideal temperature range for your room should be between 60-67 degrees Fahrenheit. If your room is cooler rather than warmer, you will sleep much better. Sometimes, there’s not much we can do in terms of the temperature. This is where the Avocado topper comes in handy.

The dunlop latex that it’s made from is naturally cooler than memory foam. This topper mimics the cushioning layers of the Avocado mattress. In order to keep you cool and dry, it’s filled with Joma New Zealand wool, which is quilted into the cover. Wool has singular thermoregulation properties. It is meant to wick away moisture and allow air to circulate naturally. It is meant to both keep you cool in the summer and warm in the winter. The cover is also breathable as well, adding to that cooling factor. When I sleep on it, I am instantly cooled down. I love how the cover is always cool and ready for me to rest on it comfortably. As a Rheumatoid Arthritis sufferer, I enjoy the cool feeling on my sore joints. This definitely does the trick, and I’m very impressed with it overall.

Durability

A topper may not last you 10 years, but it’s nice for it to stay intact for the time being. As I inspected it further, I found no reason to believe that I would ever have to use any kind of warranty to get it replaced or fixed. I tried to rip the latex myself, and I couldn’t. It’s definitely more durable than some of the other mattress toppers that I have encountered. In terms of longevity, latex is one of the most resilient toppers or mattress materials you can purchase. Rest assured, this topper will last a long time.

Avocado Reviews and Feedback

In an effort to create a mattress topper fit for everybody, Avocado did a pretty great job. Other than the slight initial “farm” smell that comes with it, it’s just about perfect. This is the ideal topper for those mattresses that are less than acceptable. It’s great for providing comforting relief and has been said to relieve pain in the hips and shoulders, which I can personally attest to. There are virtually no negative reviews when it comes to this bedding product.

Who Is It Recommended For?

There are so many mattress toppers on the market, which means it can be difficult to pick just one that works with your body. The Avocado features a number of qualities that make it a very versatile product. From its option to choose from firm or plush, all the way to the brass zipper, it’s rather exceptional. This would be a great fit for:

Those who sleep too hot

Those suffering from back, hip, or shoulder pain

Sleepers of all types
