Layla Topper : Four Firmness Options in One

It can be frustrating when your sleep trial is over and your mattress just isn’t offering you the comfort it used to. As long as there are no deep impressions and your mattress isn’t old and worn out, a cost-effective way to improve your situation is to consider a mattress topper.

Since the comfort layers take on the most wear and tear, a topper works to refresh your top layer and acts as a buffer between you and your sleep surface. I recently received my Layla topper, and this product has undergone a design modification that changed the cube pattern to one with hexagons. I think this worked well to give the entire Layla line of sleep products a more modern look.

Whether or not you use the Layla mattress with your topper, it comes in all standard sizes and provides excellent antibacterial and conforming properties. So, without further adieu, let’s take a look at how the new and improved Layla topper works.

New Layla Topper: Initial Thoughts

There are a number of products out there today that feature memory foam. However, due to the many efforts to keep it sleeping cooler than traditional memory foam, they can often lack that cushiony, enveloping feel.

If you are a fan of the feeling of traditional memory foam, I think you’ll really like the contour the Layla topper provides. When you press down on the material, it very slowly regains form. This is where the term “memory” foam comes from. The material “remembers” your form as it was originally used by NASA to keep test pilots adequately cushioned.

You can see how well it does at allowing for good contour in the hip and shoulder areas on both the firm and plush settings of the new and improved Layla mattress.

New Layla Topper Composition and Setup

First, let’s get an understanding of the composition of this product. It contains the same memory foam found in the Layla mattress. This 2-inch topper is copper-infused to help keep your mattress cool and clean, and it works to add extra contouring abilities to your current mattress. If you suffer from painful pressure points, this is a huge plus. It can also help people who don’t carry much weight since it can be more difficult for them to enjoy deep contouring support from their mattress.

Unlike many toppers that just lie on top of the mattress, the Layla topper includes straps that keep it in place.

When you first unbox this product, it will be a little bit bunched up, but this is completely normal considering it was compressed in a box. Just shake the material, and it should make its way into place. After around 30 minutes, it should be completely decompressed and ready to use.

Features & Benefits

Proprietary Softening for Silky Feel on the Cover

The first thing you’ll notice when you lie on your new and improved sleep surface is the feel. Since the cover can be dry cleaned, you can choose whether or not to use this with a fitted sheet. Layla implements a proprietary softening process to their fabric, and the result is an almost silky feel that’s unlike any other I’ve tried out.

Copper-Infusion for Excellent Alignment

I like that the memory foam allows you to sink without compromising on necessary comfort. This is due to the copper infusion. Since copper strengthens when compressed, this allows for proper contour while still offering support where necessary to keep the spine aligned, and you can definitely pick up on this when you lie on the Layla topper.

More Freedom in Firmness Options

This product is made for shoppers who want a plusher sleep surface. The 2-inches of additional foam become completely compressed when you lie on it, and this can be seen when you compare the firmness of my mattress with or without the topper.

As you can see, I’m using my topper with the Layla mattress. It’s flippable and provides two firmness settings. If you want to learn more about that, check out our Layla mattress review.

When I stand in the middle of the mattress, I sink in 7 ¼ inches. On the firm side, I sink in 5 ½ inches. You can see, in each case, I sink an additional two inches with the topper in place.

The indentation load deflection tells us a little more about the firmness. Check out our complete article to learn in detail how this works. However, for the purposes of this review, just know that 12 is very plush and 50 is very firm. The Layla topper weighs in at 10, so this is really plush.

If you struggle with pressure points or don’t carry much weight, I think this product will provide that added comfort and hug you’re looking for.

Excellence in Motion Isolation

Where memory foam traditionally lacks in heat transfer it more than makes up for in its ability to isolate motion to the point of impact. This is a very significant aspect for sleep partners. If you have a mattress that’s got a bouncy innerspring unit, this could prove to be a big help.

In the video above, you can see how well it does at keeping a resting 20-pound medicine ball still when I drop another of equal weight next to it. Sleep partners who struggle with disturbed sleep due to movement may find the solution they’re looking for with the Layla topper.

Heat Transfer- Does It Sleep Hot?

Let’s take a moment to discuss heat transfer. You want your mattress to sleep cool. Few things are more annoying than losing sleep in a pool of sweat. This product takes two primary measures to overcome excessive heat buildup:

  • Memory foam is infused with copper gel beads to absorb body heat.
  • The cover is woven with a thermoGEL cooling agent to reduce heat buildup.

With each product we test, we take a look at the cooling process using our thermal imaging camera, so I put it to the test. I lied on my Layla topper for a half hour on both the plush and firm settings of its corresponding mattress. Here were the results:

  • Plush side- 14 minutes
  • Firm side- 13 ½ minutes

In each case, it added about 30 seconds to the cool down process compared with the mattress alone.

Memory foam is known to sleep hot, and I’ve experienced times as high as 17 minutes for cooldown. However, the average is around 10.

Keep in mind that your mattress’s ability to sleep cool is going to make a big impact. If you don’t have any issues with hot sleeping on your current sleep surface, I don’t think you’re going to notice much of a difference. However, if you already sleep hot, you may want to consider the additional purchase of a cooling pad to go with your topper.

Durability: Will the Layla Topper Stand the Test of Time?

Let’s take a look at what you can expect in terms of durability. Keep in mind, most wear and tear takes place at the top of the mattress, so this 2-inch added layer is under a lot of stress. With that being said, it is made in the USA.

The density of the Layla topper weighs in at 3.5 pounds per cubic foot. In memory foam, you want four to five for maximum durability, but this typically requires you to pay quite a bit more than you do with the Layla topper. You don’t usually run into significant issues until you reach a density of three pcf or less. Overall, I think the cost-to-durability ratio equates a good overall value.

Maintenance, Protection, Care & Warranty

Let’s face it. Accidents happen. If your cover becomes soiled, the Layla topper zipper cover is removable, and Layla recommends you dry clean to maintain the optimal plushness and feel.

You may wash the cover on a gentle cycle and dry with low heat, but washing the cover may void your warranty. The cover is not waterproof.

I prefer a mattress more on the plush side, so I was a fan of the Layla topper. I like that the copper infusion provides an antimicrobial property to keep bacteria at bay, and it can be an excellent choice for restless sleep partners who struggle with excessive motion transfer.

Shipping: How Long Will It Take to Arrive?

It takes two to three days for Layla to craft your topper after you order. After that, it is shipped, and it takes between 1-4 days to get to your house. Layla ships from Phoenix, AZ, so you can estimate your delivery based on the distance away you live from that location.

When Layla ships your topper, you do get an email that includes a tracking number so you can keep track of shipping progress.

Cost

Just because your current mattress isn’t offering the right comfort doesn’t mean you need to buy something new. For under $400, you can completely transform the feel of your mattress.

Keep in mind, if your mattress is old, worn out, or sagging, a two-inch topper isn’t going to work miracles. In your case, it’s time for a mattress upgrade. However, if you just need to refresh the feel of your current mattress or make it plusher, here’s what you can expect to pay:

Our Final Verdict

If you already have trouble getting in and out of bed, the addition of this product will make mobility even harder. In this case, you may want to look for a topper with more bounce like one made of latex.

Layla does allow you to feel the topper for yourself before you’re dedicated to your purchase. If you don’t like it for any reason, they’ll arrange for you to donate it to a local charity. Once you provide them with the donation receipt, you get a full refund with no hidden fees. You are also backed with a 5-year warranty that covers splitting or cracking of the foam and defects in the cover.

If you’re looking for something to improve contour, make your mattress plusher, or help keep your sleep surface from transferring motion, this could be an excellent purchase.
