What Will You Choose: Novosbed VS Nest?

Updated December 18, 2019

Are you feeling a little out of sorts when you wake up in the morning, maybe a little stiff and sore? Does your old spring mattress have a spot that’s sticking up in your back, or maybe you’ve got a sinkhole in the center of your foam mattress? Maybe your memory foam has just gotten to be too much to handle, and you sleep too hot. Maybe you’re just ready for a change. Whatever the case, you’re in the market for a new mattress. The problem is, you aren’t sure exactly what you’re in the market to buy. If you’ve had your mattress for at least five years, there have been tons of innovations and changes in the world of sleep spaces, and that could be a delight or a hindrance if you don’t know how to shop for a mattress.

Let’s Dive In!

Of course, the most important part of shopping for anything is information. You can’t understand your options if you aren’t well informed on what they are. With mattresses, you’ll want to learn all you can about the different materials and how they function, and then you have to analyze your personal sleep style so you can match it to the type of mattress that will best meet those needs. Whether it’s edge support or motion transfer control that’s a problem for you, there’s a mattress that will provide a perfect environment.

To help you better investigate what sort of mattress might work for you, we’ve completed a comparison review between two top of the line bed in a box mattresses so you can see them side by side and determine which elements will affect you most and help you least. The Novosbed and Nest mattresses are both quality products, and the available options mean that you have some customization that allows the items to better suit you.

The construction of the Novosbed mattress is intriguing, with four traditional layers and an optional unique fifth layer that can literally add or take away some of the plush feel.

Construction of the Novosbed Mattress

Cover

The four traditional layers start with a woven polyester blend cover that is highly breathable and includes heat dispersing properties from Tencel, a material made specifically from bamboo for its cooling and moisture wicking properties. It’s also extremely durable, giving the cover a sturdy feel, with the blending of other materials smoothing out the surface of the cover so that it’s soft and elegant against your skin. The airflow is great, the cushioning is nice, and overall, the cover of the Novosbed mattress gives you a find sleep environment.

Top Layer

Beneath the cover, the initial layer of the Novosbed is memory foam, one of two such layers that help provide relief on specific pressure points, comfort, and alignment, and the support you need to assure you get a good night’s rest. This particular layer is 2 inches thick and is unique in that it’s aerated. Memory foam does tend to sleep hot and can be a problem for some people, but the airflow that’s created in this particular layer helps disperse heat easily, so you sleep soundly through the night. That bodes well for those who suffer from night sweats. It’s also a slow response memory foam, which helps to keep you from feeling as though you’re sinking into the mattress as your body aligns and the foam contours around you. This aids in relieving pressure points, too, so you aren’t sore and achy in the morning. This is essential for patients with arthritis and other joint or nerve pain and can really make a difference in how you sleep and how you get through a day. This layer is part of the dynamic of the firmness of the Novosbed mattress, with the customized soft, medium, and firm levels, which can again be altered with the unique additional layer.

Middle Layer

The next 2 inches of memory foam in the Novosbed mattress is a bit quicker to respond, though as a transitional layer, you won’t notice it. This layer offers support to keep you aligned rather than allowing the comfort layer to sink too far in as you find your sleep position while also having the give you need so that you don’t feel like you’re lying down on a layer of bricks. This helps with the ‘floating’ feeling some get from memory foam and don’t like, allowing you to ease into your perfect environment every night. Because it helps lift you, it also negates any feeling of being ‘hugged’ too tightly or smothered, which some have reported in other memory foam mattresses. In addition, you’ll find that the quicker response allows you to feel like you’re ‘in’ the mattress without feeling closed in or overheated. It’s a perfect transition into the support layer beneath.

Base Layer

The bottom 7 inches of the Novosbed mattress consists of a high density poly foam that is an excellent, firm support system for the top layers of memory foam. This denser material helps hold the shape of the bed and acts as a base for the mattress and is a standard part of almost any mattress on the market that utilizes foam or latex. It’s a smooth surface on that back that makes it easy to rest your mattress almost anywhere, whether that be the floor, slats, or traditional box springs.

Comfort+ Optional Layer

With these traditional layers, you get three firmness options on the Novosbed – plush, medium, and firm. However, that could leave something to be desired for some people, such as a side sleeper who might need something just a little firmer than the medium option. With the additional option of a Comfort+ layer, you can further customize your Novosbed mattress, creating ‘in between’ firmness levels, as well as a point softer or harder. This additional layer, which is offered free of charge, simply zips into the mattress itself. There is no other need for connecting, sewing, or other methods to get the extra layer, and you suddenly have not 3 but 9 firmness options, covering pretty much the entire spectrum of possibilities.

Firmness of the Novosbed Mattress

Obviously, because of the many different options for firmness, it’s hard to truly ‘rate’ the firmness of the Novosbed mattress, so we’ve given a guide to the various aspects that are involved in the firmness rating, using the medium option without a Comfort+ layer to start. As far as ‘medium’ goes, most people would rate that as between 5 and 6 on a scale of 1 to 10, and the Novosbed medium mattress easily falls in this range as advertised. It might rate on the higher end, as many claim the Novosbed is slight ‘firm’, but we still found it easily within range. Assume that a Comfort+ layer will either add or subtract a full point on the scale of firmness to get an idea of what can be done with this layer to alter the original feel. For example, the soft Comfort+ layer added to the medium firmness mattress would create a firmness of around 4.5.

Testing the medium mattress, it seemed more than adequate in terms of support for all sleep positions, keeping stomach sleepers from feeling smothered, side sleepers aligned, and back sleepers from feeling as though they were floating above the mattress. The top layer is responsive when pressed and released, giving you the right feel when you’re ready to fall into bed and just go to sleep without allowing for that horrible sinking feeling. In terms of initial rating of firmness on the spectrum, the softer mattress hits right at a 3, while the firm mattress is around a 7.5, so you literally have the entire spectrum to choose from as you alter the mattresses with the Comfort+ layers.

Feel of a Novosbed Mattress

If you don’t like a little bit of a ‘hugging’ feeling in your mattress, you probably won’t like any latex or memory foam mattress on the market. While this is just part of the way the material works to align your back and spine for a better and healthier rest, it is minimized here with the use of the transitional layer being a bit springier, with a faster response that is more similar to a traditional spring coil mattress.

Unique Features – Novosbed Mattress

The fact that the manufacturer has found a way to almost completely customize firmness with a standard bed in a box is completely unique to the Novosbed mattress. While so many companies have multiple options now, it’s nearly impossible to incorporate the exact fit for your needs. Here, with a simple additional layer offered for free, you can customize the firmness down to about a single point. While not all consumers are looking for a memory foam mattress, it’s hard to deny that, if you give it the trial period, you’ll likely find that anyone can be satisfied by this particular mattress.

A Breakdown of the Nest Mattress

Construction of the Nest Mattress

We’ve chosen to compare the Nest mattress here to the Novosbed mattress because there are some very obvious similarities but some distinct differences. For example, you get five layers (if you order the Comfort+ layer on the Novosbed), and they are both essentially memory foam mattresses. However, the types of foam are quite different, and the construction varies.

Cover for the Nest Mattress

The top of the Nest mattress is a polyester cotton blend cover that not only creates a smooth, beautiful surface but incorporates a 2 inch layer of foam inside. This thicker cover provides a slow response ‘hugging’ layer that begins the contouring of the entire mattress to your body for an easier, better night’s sleep. While the foam would typically be a concern for holding heat, the blended material of the cover helps with heat disbursement.

Top Layer

The cover rests atop a gel memory foam layer that gives the Nest mattress an advantage over so many other similar beds, aiding in both keeping the sleep environment cooler and perfectly adjusting to your sleep position. While traditional memory foam sleeps hot, memory foam infused with gel stays cooler, with the gel providing a unique cooling effect. In addition, it allows for greater airflow through the layer so that heat is carried away. This 4-inch layer also has a slightly quicker response to the pressure you put on it than the foam in the cover, keeping you from feeling as though you’re sinking in too quickly or too deeply. At the same time, it helps to relieve pressure on joints that typically cause the greatest pain, and it helps keep your spine aligned through the night, regardless of your sleep position.

Visco Foam

The proprietary Visco foam layer is just an inch thick, but it creates a very subtle transition from the comfort layer on top to the supportive layers beneath, keeping you from noticing the change as you ease into the more supportive layers. It’s part of the way that the manufacturer works to create pressure relief with less sinkage.

Polyurethane Foam

Another inch of transitional foam further creates the right sleep experience by again easing you into the firmer support of a mattress that is made to relieve pressure points without your body ever taking note of the difference. This particular layer is a polyurethane foam, which tends to be denser with a quicker response, therefore cutting down further on the sinking and hugging feeling that could become overwhelming should you have just memory foam to work with.

Base Layer

The final 4 inches of the Nest mattress is a sturdy poly foam that is quite dense and acts as both the support and shape of the mattress. Whereas the several layers of foam above are meant to ease you into a comfortable, peaceful sleep, the job of the base is to provide the support you need so you don’t end up lying in a hole on the floor or box spring. It also aids in maintaining the shape of the mattress, lending the edge support that is required for an even feel across the bed. It also helps mute some of the motion transfer in its rapid response so that you don’t notice your sleep partner’s movements during the night.

The Firmness of a Nest Mattress

Like many of the new bed in a box designs, the Nest mattress is offered in 3 firmness levels – soft, medium firm, and luxury firm. Note that the soft version of the mattress actually incorporates an additional 1.5-inch layer of quilted cover that sits on top of the 2 inches of gel memory foam, followed by 2 inches of Visco foam and then 3 inches of polyurethane foam. This lends its softer feel. The luxury firm version also differs slightly, with the base layer consisting of 6 inches rather than 4, a 3-inch layer of polyurethane, 2 inches of gel memory foam, and only 1.5 inches of foam in the quilted cover. In rating the firmness of the Nest bed, it’s easiest to start with the middle ground and discuss the medium firm option, which rests at a comfortable 5.5 – 6 out of 10 on the scale. That makes it great for back and side sleepers, while stomach sleepers might want to opt for the luxury firm version, which rates closer to a 7. The soft version, which is also good for back and side sleepers or transitional sleepers who like their bedding just a little softer, ranks about a 4.5 – 5 on the same scale.

Feel of a Nest Mattress

Even in the plusher version of the Nest mattress, there is no feeling like you’re plunging into it, with the rapid response foam layers doing their job to help transition the soft contouring of the top comfort layers to the tougher, supportive layers for perfect pressure relief. Also, all versions have credible edge support for an even feel across the mattress, wherever you want to rest your head. You’ll find that motion transfer is also well contained, though the luxury firm version may have a small amount of ‘bounce’ to it with the thicker base layer creating a bit more of a springy feeling and a bit less ‘cushion’. One thing the Nest mattress does right for sure is heat disbursement. Standard memory foam often sleeps hot, and if you have underlying health issues or medication that cause you to sleep hot anyway, memory foam can be difficult to use, despite the comfort of pressure point relief. However, the Nest mattress incorporates the gel memory foam in its comfort layer, which automatically sleeps cooler as gel, while also taking the heat from your body and disbursing it evenly so you don’t create a ‘hot spot’ where you sleep.

Unique Features – Nest Mattress

Including an extra layer of foam in the cover itself is a unique feature offered by the Nest mattress that you won’t really find elsewhere. This added comfort is the main adjustment between the firmness levels of the 3 different offerings, aside from the thicker base layer on the luxury firm model. It gives you that extra sense of being drawn into the mattress for a comfortable sleep. However, if you find you don’t like that extra cushion, it’s as easy as taking off the cover and buying a standard mattress cover.

The comparison points out some things you might want to consider in one mattress over the other to meet your own personal needs so you can make a better-informed decision in your mattress purchase.
