Construction

Cover

Starting off from the top, the Nectar’s cover is completely organic, made from a eucalyptus-based fiber known as “Tencel®”. The fabric is soft, light and being organic, skin friendly as well preventing the onset of allergic reactions. Furthermore, it works towards improving the breathability of the mattress leading to a cooler surface.

The cover has its own free replacement policy – apart from the main warranty – with the company replacing it if gets damaged.

First Layer

The first layer consists of 1” of quilted gel viscoelastic foam with an ILD rating of 14. This gives it a highly cushioning and adaptive response. The layer is responsible for absorbing the initial load of the body before progressing it to the layers below. The gel within the foam takes the heat away from the surface resulting in a cooler and more comfortable sleep compared to ordinary foam products.

Second Layer

The first layer is followed by another gel memory foam layer with a thickness of 3 inches and an ILD rating of 15. The increased thickness as well as firmness means a slower response is generated to your body’s load compared to the first layer. This keeps your posture aligned while you sleep at night.

Third Layer

Gel-memory foams often face the brunt of being too contouring, deforming permanently over extended periods of time. To counter this, Nectar has added a Hi-Core Adaptive Viscoelastic foam layer of 2 inches and an ILD rating of 45. The layer is responsible for providing robust lumbar support and serves as a buffer between the soft upper and harder base layer. Having such a high ILD rating means it is stiffer and offers necessary resistance to the load created by your weight.

Fourth Layer

This is the lowermost layer, offering unyielding support to the body after the upper layers adapt to the body’s contours. With a thickness of 7 inches and an ILD rating of 55, the layer prevents the body from sinking any further, something that may result in discomfort and stress for the joints. The layer is composed of 2.2 lbs/cu.ft of polyurethane foam.

Firmness and Feel

Comfort and Support

The Nectar combines the plush response of memory foam with the stiff reaction of extra high-density polyurethane (bottom-most layer). This gives it a medium-firm firmness level, giving you a well-balanced overall feel that has both support and pressure-relief. Note that this is the only one in which it is offered.

The presence of a layer of Adaptive Hi-Core Foam means the mattress doesn’t get deformed after extended usage intervals, while preventing the body from sinking too deep. In comparison, My Green Mattress is primarily a latex product and would be preferable for sleepers who don’t want to get the overly enveloped feeling usually accompanied by a memory foam.

Edge Support

As the mattress consists of layers of memory foam, it does have the tendency to sink as you move towards the edges. However, it doesn’t sink completely thanks to the sharp increase in the ILD rating of the third and fourth layers. While this gives the mattress an edge over average memory foam-based products, My Green Mattress’ Natural Escape holds up much better due to the bounce offered by Dunlop latex.

Cooling

From the very top, Nectar’s Tencel® cover works to promote breathability within the mattress, followed by two gel-based layers that dissipate it away from the body. Further ventilation and airflow are brought in by the air channels in the base of the mattress that provide an outlet to the accumulated heat. The higher ILD of the third and fourth layers also play a part, ensuring that the contours don’t sink too deep so that you get trapped in your body’s heat.

In retrospect, the Natural Escape mattress also offers a cooler night’s sleep as it inherits the benefits of latex rubber, followed by the pocketed coil system that promotes airflow too.

Motion Transfer

Pressure applied to the mattress is absorbed by the first two layers after which the higher ILD rating of the third and subsequently last layer put the contours to a halt. All impacts are absorbed locally without dissipating too much in the sideways directions, allowing the Nectar to gain optimum motion transfer. This makes it a good choice for someone planning on sharing his/her bed with a partner.

Unique Features

Affordably priced

Nectar is less costly compared to My Green Mattress. This doesn’t make it a sub-par choice in terms of quality, as the manufacturer backs its reputation with a 365-day trial and a lifetime warranty. This makes it a bargain in the high-priced comfort industry.

Signature viscoelastic feel with lessened sinkage

Memory foam-based products are often overlooked as buyers fear they might provide too much contouring. But this doesn’t hold true for Nectar due to the Hi-Core layer followed by the extra thick, high ILD fourth layer, striking a balance between sinkage and plush push.

Organic cover

The Nectar has an organic cover made from a fiber that is soft, light and promotes breathability. It’s also a great option for people who are prone to skin diseases and fares much better than synthetics at absorbing moisture.

Longer money back guarantee period

Even though the Nectar is cheaper, it gives its users a 365-day trial period offer, which My Green Mattress fails to match with their briefer 100 day trial period. The yearlong trial is enough time to get your body adjusted according to the mattress, and then making a calm-headed decision as to what you want. If you don’t like the Nectar that much, just give the company a call and get your money back!

Longer warranty

Compared to My Green Mattress that has a 10-year warranty period, Nectar boasts the label of “lifetime warranty”. Such a statement is a bold move, which only shows the trust they have in their product’s quality and durability.

My Green Mattress Natural Escape Breakdown

My Green Mattress is a company founded in 1995 by Tim Masters who sought to alleviate his daughter’s allergies through the use of natural products. Natural Escape is one of the mattresses offered by the company and consists primarily of two layers, Dunlop Latex and pocketed coil spring system.

Construction

Cover

My Green Mattress incorporates an organic cotton and all-natural wool cover produced in the West Coast regions of Northern California and Southern Oregon. The material is Greenguard Gold Certified, which is a stringent certification awarded to less than 1% of all mattresses, putting the contenders through rigorous testing for 360 different chemicals and emissions.

First Layer

Under the cover is the first layer of the mattress comprising of 100% Natural Dunlop Latex with an ILD of 18-22. This translates into a medium-firmness level that accommodates the needs of majority sleepers. Expect minimal off-gassing as the entire product is GreenGuard as well as OEKO Tex Certified. Since, the layer is made of latex, it has a lighter feel along with more bounce and faster response time. While memory foam slowly contours the body, Latex allows sinkage and compression. For people looking for a plusher feel, Nectar would be a better choice.

Second Layer

This consists of 8” of pocketed coil innerspring system, with each one wrapped individually, allowing them to operate independent of each other. This is different from mattresses with continuous coil construction where pressure placed on one section elicits a generalized response from the entire unit.

Firmness and Feel

Comfort and Support

The three-inch layer of Natural Dunlop Latex is the prime source of comfort in the mattress. The layer provides medium firmness, serving a range of sleepers, also accommodating those with a lot of weight. Next, the innerspring system comes to play, with three strategic comfort zones to provide superior support to the hips, back and shoulders. From the head to toe, the coil gauge varies from 15.5 to 14.5 to 15.5. This means that the thinner lumbar area remains comfortable and free from awkward discomforts.

As the build is completely different from that of a memory-foam mattress, this is a better option for those who prefer a stiffer mattress than those looking for a more enveloping feel.

Edge Support

Natural Escape holds off very well while you lay or sit on the side. Edge support is a prime parameter for any good mattress as it is utilized very often and is necessary for a good night’s sleep especially if you have a partner. With My Green Mattress, you don’t get the feeling that you’re about to slide off the side thanks to the bouncier response generated by the Latex foam.

Cooling

The mattress is a good choice for hot sleepers. The use of a thermal imaging camera showed that it took the Green Mattress 5.5 minutes to return to room temperature (64 degrees). In contrast, the average time for cooling down is 11 minutes. The credit for this goes to the latex build as well as the innerspring unit that keeps heat from building up and irritating the sleeper.

Motion Transfer

The support coil system in use is one of the most advanced available, and as the coils float independently, motion transfer is significantly reduced. One may think that the spring system may actually amplify a change in load, however, the 3-zone design along with a reinforced perimeter, minimizes disruption due to varying pressure.

Unique Features

Greenguard Gold Certified

The certification may be thought of as a “white glove inspection” for the mattress industry that tests for emissions standards and how they might affect children and elderly people. As stated earlier, only 1% of all mattresses pass the test, which makes the Natural Escape a wise choice for people who prioritize their health above everything else.

Natural Latex Rubber

The rubber used in Natural Escape is 100% natural Dunlop latex. In addition to being eco-friendly, it is a preferred choice for people who are looking for a stiffer mattress with a resistive response. Memory foam mattresses might provide too much sinkage which may make some sleepers uncomfortable. If you’re one of them, then My Green Mattress is the way to go.

Targeted support from zoned spring system

The 8-inch innerspring unit makes up the bulk of the product. As the spring system is made to fulfill the requirements of three different zones of the body, the result is greater comfort and targeted pressure relief. The Pelvic Area is softer, so is the Shoulder Area while the Lumbar Area is firmer. By offering zoned response, the mattress can prevent the onset of awkward pains in the joints and muscles.

Addresses off gassing concerns

Smell due to off-gassing is common with new mattresses, with some even requiring days to completely lose pungent odors. If this is something that you’re sensitive to (or you’ve become aware of some of the more serious hazards of mattress off-gassing), then there’s good news for you in the form of My Green Mattress. As the mattress is Greenguard Gold certified, there is minimal off-gassing. You can even use the mattress the same night you unbox it!

Which One To Get?

Nectar

Here are some reasons to consider the Nectar:

  •  You’re on a budget:  The Nectar offers a highly comfortable, plush sleep solution to memory-foam lovers, with support from stiffer lower layers. On top of that, it has a very low asking price, one that’s lower than that of My Green Mattress.
  •   You want an authentic memory foam experience: The Nectar is primarily composed of gel-infused memory foam, except for a stiff layer of Hi-Core foam. This means that the mattress generates the slow, contouring response that is sought after by memory foam enthusiasts.
  •   You want more time to try out your new mattress: Nectar has a yearlong trial policy, which is more than enough time for your body to get accustomed to a new product. You can carry out all the testing and trial-runs on the mattress’ attributes and make your decision with a cool head. If you’re not satisfied, you’ll get your money back.
  •   A longer warranty is important for you: Nectar possesses a lifetime warranty, meaning you can get a free replacement if the mattress fails to survive the test of time. This feature also shows the level of confidence the manufacturer has in its product and implies that the mattress is unlikely to breakdown.

However, you might want to go for the Natural Escape if:

  •   You want both conformity and responsiveness: While the Nectar is great at adjusting according to the body’s contours, some people don’t want to sink too deep into their mattresses. For them, My Green Mattress is great as it combines the bounciness of rubber and responsiveness of a 3-zoned independent spring system. This would give you the comfort you require without trapping yourself in!
  •   You’re a fan of durable products: Natural latex and innerspring cores happen to the most durable bedding materials out there right now, and since the My Green Mattress combines them both admirably, you’re looking at a sturdy product that should last you for quite a while – even more than the Nectar (its longer trial period and warranty notwithstanding).
  •   You’re looking for zoned transition: My Green Mattress has a three-zone spring system that responds uniquely to each major area of the body, thus offering a better pressure relieving solution. In contrast, the Nectar has the same ILD rating for each distinct layer, resulting in an identical response for each area of the body.
  •   You’re health conscious: Apart from being Greenguard Gold Certified, My Green Mattress holds certifications from organizations such as Oeko-Tex, GOLS, GOTS Organics. This shows the importance the company places on their customers’ health. Therefore, if you’re looking for a mattress that poses minimal toxic risk to you and your family, Natural Escape is the way to go.

That’s it from my end. I hope that post would be informative to you, and ultimately help you make the decision that suits you best. Do share it with others who are stuck in a similar dilemma. For questions and comments, please use the section below.
