A Little Bit About the Company and Their Product

The CEO of Lull mattress, Sven Klein, recalls the day he and his wife decided it was time to replace the first mattress they had ever purchased as a couple. They were excited at the prospect of enjoying a better night’s rest and feeling rejuvenated in the morning. However, the shopping experience was one he found no positivity in. From unfriendly salespeople to the inconvenience of having to travel so much to ensure the best variety in options, it was just a hassle. When it was all said and done, the couple acquired a mattress that didn’t even offer them the comfort they needed.

That’s when he decided to get into the mattress business, and he made it his goal to offer consumers a premium sleep solution at a much lower cost than a traditional option without all the trouble. The Lull mattress utilizes advanced sleep technology, and the company has attained a 95 percent satisfaction rating among their customers.

With the Lull mattress, you get to take advantage of the features of memory foam with solutions in place to counter this popular mattress material’s most common disadvantages. Its visco elastic properties allow the material to conform with the unique curves of your body, offering great contour and comfort. So, without further adieu, let’s discuss the Lull mattress from top to bottom.

About the Cover

The cover of the Lull mattress is white with a dotted pattern with grey side panels. I think this gives it a very neutral look that works well in most settings. It’s created using a blend of polyester, rayon and polypropylene, and the result is a very elastic cover that snaps easily back into place if you tug on it. I appreciated this property. With many covers I’ve experienced, they tend to bunch up if you tug on them or apply a lot of direct pressure to an isolated area. The cover is very soft, and I found it to be satisfactorily comfortable.

What Lies Beneath

While it’s important to understand the cover and how it will feel against your skin, what you really need to understand is what it envelopes. In the case of the Lull mattress, there are three important layers that can help you understand if this product will work well for you, so let’s break them down!

Memory Foam Comfort Layer

The first layer is comprised of 1 ½ inches of memory foam which serves to distribute weight and contour your body’s curves. This can help for those suffering with aches and pains primarily in the joints, lower back, and neck due to pressure points that develop on less contouring mattresses.

If you’re familiar with memory foam, you’ve likely heard that they can cause you to sink in and feel “stuck” in the mattress. With Lull mattress, this concern is put to rest. This product is well-supported with other layers beneath which we’ll discuss next!

Transition Layer

The 1 ½ inch transition layer is made from a proprietary blend of premium foam that, when combined with the 7″ high-density polyurethane core, offers that therapeutic support those suffering with aches and pains are looking for. Normally, we like to take this time to review the densities and indentation load deflections of each layer to get a better idea of firmness and durability expectations. However, Lull has a proprietary blend of materials that required strategic research and planning to develop, so I think it’s understandable that they want to keep their recipe an industry secret.

Base

Finally, the two upper layers of the Lull mattress are supported by a 7″ high-density polyurethane core support layer. It works to ensure proper body alignment while you are sleeping. A healthy spinal position allows your muscles to rest throughout the night and you to wake up refreshed in the morning.

Lull Firmness Expectations

When mattress shopping online, you aren’t able to lay on a mattress before you buy it, and that’s why we make it our goal to do our best in showing you what to expect. Lull makes it their mission to accommodate the average customer, and this product features a medium firmness as this is what most people prefer. Based on my experience with other medium-firm products, I found this mattress to feel comparable.

We would typically give you a rundown of the indentation load deflections of the various layers to give you a better idea of the overall firmness, but, again this information is proprietary. However, I can provide you with a visual to give you a better idea!

I stood on this product using my kitchen broom to help you gauge what is level. Standing in the middle of the mattress, I applied my 130 pounds to a 9 by 7 inch area, and I sunk in 6 ½ inches. This is pretty typical for medium firmness compared with other products I’ve tested.

Is Medium the Right Choice for You?

Statistically speaking, a medium mattress is probably a good choice. However, if you’re like me, you may be an outlier who prefers something more firm or plush. Personally, I like my mattresses a little on the plush side. Everyone is unique, and, if you aren’t sure if medium is right for you, there are a few things you can ask yourself to make this determination:

What is my favorite sleeping position?

Stomach

  • Fares well with firmer products.

Back

  • Medium firm is a good option.

Side

  • Medium to soft helps improve contour in the shoulders and hips

What’s my body mass index?

Your body mass index represents your level of body fat in respect to your weight and height. You can calculate your BMI here. Once you receive your BMI calculation, follow this chart to determine your optimal firmness level:

  • BMI below 19 — SOFT
  • BMI between 19 and 25 — MEDIUM
  • BMI between 26 and 31 — FIRM

I do think it’s worth mentioning that, even though my BMI is below 19, I still found the Lull mattress to be comfortable to sleep on. Often, the simple investment in a quality mattress topper can add that extra layer of cushion if you like a plusher mattress.

Low Off Gassing

When materials are newly-manufactured, it’s normal for volatile organic compounds to release for a few days after you take the product out of the package. This results in a chemical smell that you often experience with things like shoes and paint. When it comes to mattresses, there are steps the manufacturer can take to minimize this occurrence.

If VOCs are particularly bothersome for you, you’ll be glad to know that all foams used in the Lull mattress are CertiPUR-US® Certified, which means that they meet rigorous standards for minimizing off-gassing. It uses no harmful chemicals such as formaldehyde, ozone depleters, heavy metals and certain flame retardants that may cause cancer and genetic defects. All foams meet the standard of fewer than 0.5 parts per million VOCs. When I opened my mattress, I didn’t detect any off gassing.

Comfort and Support

Memory foam provides a unique type of comfort, and I’ve been a long-time fan of the way it contours your body. However, since the comfort layer is only 1 ½ thick, you really don’t sink in the way some products cause you to do. This makes it really easy to move around. With the inclusion of the proprietary transition layer and high-density foam base, I thought Lull married comfort and support very well in their final product.

I do think it’s worth noting that, if you weigh more than 250 pounds, Lull doesn’t recommend their product as it’s not designed to support that amount of weight. For couples, you don’t want to exceed 500 pounds of combined weight. Furthermore, those who do carry a lot of weight generally want to look for a product that’s at least 12 inches thick. If you do go ahead with the purchase of the Lull mattress, you may experience a decrease in durability.

Lull Edge Support

We all spend time sitting on the edge of our mattresses at some point. As a matter of fact, you likely find yourself there every morning as you get out of bed. Some may even find that they lay close to the edge as they sleep. So, let’s take a look at the edge support you can expect from the Lull mattress.

As with most all-foam products, edge support is a little bit lacking in the Lull mattress, but it’s not enough to where you risk finding yourself falling out of the bed. When I sat on the side and edge of the product, I did sink in quite a bit. I could also easily compress the entire product easily with my hands. However, when I layed on the side, I felt pretty well supported. Overall, I don’t see this being particularly problematic unless edge support is very important such as for a parent who may like to take time tucking their child in at night. In this case, I’d look for something with an innerspring unit.

Motion Transfer Reduction

If you have a sleeping partner, you very well may have experienced the frustration of a product with low motion transfer reduction. In the wrong mattress, every movement from your partner can result in lost sleep for you and vice-versa. If motion isolation is high on your priority list, then you have found the right material in memory foam. It’s well known for reducing motion well.

To demonstrate motion isolation on the Lull mattress, I used two 20 pound medicine balls. I placed one on one side of the mattress and dropped another from eye level on the opposite side. Whether I held the ball far away or very close to the resting ball, the dropped ball had minimal effect on its resting counterpart. You can watch the test in the above video. Considering the memory foam layer, I expected nothing less, but this really shows how well you can expect your Lull mattress to perform.

Temperature Regulation

A very important factor that’s easy to overlook is temperature regulation, and this is something not many retailers will be prepared to demonstrate. However, using our thermal imaging camera, we took the Lull mattress for a spin to see how well it disperses heat to help you sleep sweat-free. I layed on the mattress for 30 minutes in a 64 degree Fahrenheit room, and the thermal camera rolled as I watched the mattress return to room temperature.

Of the products I’ve tested, the average time it has taken them to return to room temperature under the same conditions has been right around 10 minutes. However, it took Lull 16 minutes. I was a little disappointed considering the memory foam is injected with special gel polymers to help heat flow. However, the product that took the longest in my experience was over 17 minutes. I personally didn’t have trouble sleeping hot in my Lull mattress, but, if hot sleeping is a big problem for you, you might want to seek out other options.

Environmentally Friendly

Lull uses smart, efficient packaging. Their box is smaller than many other mattress in a box companies offer. It’s the size of a mini fridge, and this not only makes it easy to move around but also reduces package volume by an impressive 70 percent. You can also rest assured that Lull takes all possible steps to minimize carbon emissions, and they are even a member of the Sustainable Furnishings Council®.

Maintenance, Protection, Care, and Warranty

Even though you can purchase the Lull mattress at a much lower price than comparable products found at retail stores, you’re still making a significant investment in the quality of your life. You need assurance that yours lasts as long as possible. In the event there are manufacturing problems, Lull does provide you with a 10 year warranty. To make your product last, I would suggest you consider a mattress protector to go along with your mattress purchase.

100 Night Sleep Trial

Lull wants to make sure you’re happy with their product before you fully commit yourself for the next several years. That’s why they provide a 100 night sleep trial for you to get a feel of their product. If at any time during that period you decide you aren’t satisfied, Lull will send someone to remove the product and provide you with a full refund.

What’s the Cost

If you’ve been nervously anticipating an outrageous price for a quality product, you may be surprised. Because Lull takes consideration into decreasing overhead costs such as in the design of their box, you can receive this product at a very reasonable price.

Our Final Verdict

If you’re in the market for a mattress on a budget that also offers great comfort and support, the Lull mattress can be just the right pick. I think this is a great sleep solution for the average shopper. The mid-range firmness was comfortable whether sleeping on my back, side or stomach, and I enjoyed the soft, elastic cover and the way it looks. It’s great for sleep partners who want to reduce motion transfer, and I enjoyed the way the memory foam contoured to match my body shape.
