The Layla Mattress VS The Saatva Classic Mattress: How to Choose

In this day and age where we’re constantly on the go, we tend to neglect the quality of our sleep. If you feel like you’re tired all the time and not functioning to your maximum potential, you might want to start cleaning up your sleep hygiene. While limiting the use of technology before bedtime and reducing your intake of caffeine is a good way to start, investing in a mattress that suits your individual needs also plays a pivotal part. With a shoddy mattress, you won’t be getting the restorative rest that you need, and you could end up with additional physical pains and aches.

With so many mattresses readily available, it can be overwhelming to decide on a mattress. Here, we’ll take a look at two mattresses on the market that have raving reviews. The Classic Saatva Mattress is a luxurious mattress that’s predominantly made with coils to ease your pain and provide you with restful sleep. The Layla model, on the other hand, is made with soft memory foam that’s infused with copper to provide sleepers with a good night’s sleep without feeling stuffy.

— Construction

Saatva is a popular company that was founded in 2010 and proceeded to become one of the biggest online mattress retailers on the market. They were one of the first online companies to offer innerspring mattresses that appeal to individuals with different sleep preferences. Here, we’ll be focusing on the Classic Saatva Mattress. However, Saatva has also produced other mattresses such as the Loom & Leaf model that’s made out of memory foam and the Zenhaven mattress that’s made with latex.

The Saatva is supremely comfortable and made with five different layers to provide the right amount of bounce and adequate support to the sleeper. The bed also comes in three different firmness levels to cater to individual preferences. Saatva also has a commitment to sustainability and prides itself in using eco-friendly materials for its mattress such as breathable organic cotton and foam with no toxic chemicals. There are also two different heights for the Classic Saatva model with the premier luxury version being 14.5 inches tall, and another custom slim version that’s 11.5 inches tall and compatible with an adjustable base.

The Saatva is also suited to sleepers that may have pain in their back, hip or shoulder region as the Euro pillow top helps to contour to these specific areas and relieve joint pressure. The mattress also incorporates Lumbar Zone support technology for optimal spine support.

• Top Layer – 100% organic cotton cover

The first layer of the Classic Saatva is a breathable cover that’s made of 100% organic cotton. This cover is also quilted with a foam that creates a Euro-style pillow top. With this pillow top, it helps to provide noticeable softness and pressure relief as you sink into the mattress. The cover is also uniquely constructed to be tighter in the lumbar region – allowing it to provide additional pressure relief.

• Second Layer – Convoluted foam layer

The second layer is constructed with convoluted foam to allow additional airflow. This will prevent you from overheating or feeling stuffy at night, and provide you with a cool and comfortable sleep.

• Third Layer –Coil layer with individually wrapped coils

The third layer helps to provide both additional support, contouring, and a bit of bounce to the bed. This will minimize the feeling of you feeling stuck, as you’ll be able to switch positions with no issues. These individually wrapped coils will not only help to provide optimal airflow, but it will also help with motion transfer – so you don’t have to worry about waking your sleep partner.

• Fourth Layer –Support layer with steel coils

As the name suggests, these steel coils help to support the layers above it. These steel coils also take up a considerable amount of space in the bed, which helps with facilitating airflow. As the layer above it is also made with individual coils, the combination of both these coils allows the mattress to be responsive to both pressure and bounce.

• Fifth Layer – Base foundation layer with high-density polyfoam

The final layer is a foundation layer that’s made with high-density polyfoam. It helps to form the base of the entire bed and retain the Classic Saatva Mattress’s shape.

— Firmness

There are three different firmness levels of the Classic Saatva to cater to different individuals. The three firmness levels are plush soft, luxury firm and firm. Out of all three firmness levels, the luxury firm level is the most popular as it strikes a balance between cushioning foam and uplifting support. Rating wise, it sits at about a 7.5 – a little firmer than other mattresses.

If you prefer something a little softer, they also have a plush soft firmness level which sits at about a 3 on the firmness level – perfect for sleepers that like that deep, body-hugging feel. Finally, for those who prefer a firmer bed, you can try their firm mattress that is ideal for those sleepers that prefer a tad more support. It rates at about an 8 on the firmness scale.

— Feel

While there are differences depending on the firmness level that you choose, we’ll focus on the luxury firmness Classic Saatva Mattress. As you lie on the Classic Saatva Mattress, you’ll notice the softness of the Euro-style pillow top before noticing the responsiveness of the coils below. Due to the coils, you’ll get a nice springy feel that provides an adequate amount of pressure relief and support.

— Unique Features

• Individually wrapped coils

The Classic Saatva is uniquely constructed to have a layer that is made of individually wrapped coils. With these coils, it’ll not only help with airflow, but it also responds and contours to your individual body shape. The individual wrapped coils also help with motion transfer, thus ensuring that you won’t be disturbed by your sleep partner’s tossing and turning at night.

— Construction

While the Classic Saatva Mattress focuses on using coils, the Layla model is mainly constructed with memory foam. However, unlike traditional memory foam mattresses, the Layla Mattress is constructed with memory foam that’s been infused with copper. The additional infusion of copper provides additional benefits to the sleeper such as added support, helping to keep you cool and comfortable at night, and inactivating microbes such as bacteria, fungi, mold, and viruses.

The Layla Mattress is the only memory foam bed that’s been infused with copper and has a double-sided firmness feature. The Layla Mattress calls this the flippable firmness. While one side of the mattress is softer, the other is firmer. All you have to do is flip over the mattress to your preferred side and you’re good to go.

• Top Layer – Soft Cover

The top layer of the Layla model consists of a supremely soft cover that’s made with a blend of polyester and viscose. If you need to get it cleaned, you can also easily remove the cover and have it sent through for dry cleaning. To keep you feeling cool and comfortable at night, the cover is also infused with a special thermogel that helps with the regulation of temperature.

• Second Layer – Memory Foam that has been infused with copper

As this side of the bed is the plusher side, the memory foam is three-inches thick. Due to the thicker memory foam, sleepers will slowly sink into the mattress while still being able to get proper contouring and adequate pressure relief. Since memory foam can be stuffy, this memory foam has also been infused with copper to keep you from overheating at night.

• Third Layer – Convoluted Support Foam

Similar to the Classic Saatva, the Layla model also has a convoluted support foam. This convoluted support foam is designed like an egg crate – allowing air to flow freely. The convoluted support foam is made from polyfoam and constitutes two-inches of the bed. Either than providing support and allowing airflow, the convoluted support foam also serves as the transition layer from the softer memory foam above to the firmer base support foam below.

• Fourth Layer – Base Support Foam

The base support foam adds up a total of four inches and is the thickest layer in the Layla model. Since the base support foam is constructed with polyfoam, it provides a solid foundation for the rest of the mattress. This layer also helps in propping your body up to prevent it from sinking too deep into the memory foam layer.

• Fifth Layer – Memory Foam that has been infused with copper

While constructed similarly to the second layer, this layer of the bed only has one-inch of memory foam in comparison to the second layer’s three-inches. As this side is the firmer side of the mattress, you’ll still be able to get that memory foam feeling but will notice the addition of the base support foam below.

— Firmness

The Layla Mattress has two firmness levels which you can flip to depending on which one you prefer. If you prefer a plusher bed, you can flip to the softer side which rates at a 5 on the firmness scale. The firmer side on the other hand rates at a 6.5 on the firmness scale – only slightly higher than the softer side. There aren’t stark differences between both firmness levels, but you will notice that the firmer side provides a bit more added support.

— Feel

There are slight differences in the feel of the Layla Mattress depending on which firmness level you decide to sleep on. With the softer side, you’ll notice that the memory foam layer is thicker. Hence, you’ll slowly sink into the memory foam before noticing that there’s some support to prevent you from feeling stuck.

For the firmer side, you’ll still notice that there’s that slow sink in memory foam feeling from the one-inch memory foam. However, you’ll notice that there’s added support and firmness that comes from the base support foam. There’s also a bit more bounce in comparison to the softer side.

— Unique Features

• Copper Infused

The Layla Mattress has the unique feature of being constructed with memory foam that’s infused with copper. With this addition, the copper not only helps with ensuring that you don’t overheat at night, it also provides your shoulder and hips with additional support and antimicrobial protection.

• Double-Sided

It’s rare to find a mattress that has two different firmness levels in one. With this unique feature, individuals can easily flip over to sleep on the side that suits them best. As there’s both a firmer side and a softer side, it’ll be able to cater to different preferences.

If you prefer a mattress with that traditional memory foam feel, the Layla Mattress would be a perfect fit.
