The Low Down: Layla Mattress VS the Original Purple Mattress

In recent years, mattress companies are innovating and using new technology to create mattresses that cater to different sleeper’s needs. Either than technology, mattress companies are also using different materials such as memory foam, latex, and even producing hybrid models that have a blend of these materials.

The Layla Mattress and the Original Purple Mattress are both mattresses that are utilizing technologies to stand out from traditional mattresses. While the Layla Mattress is a memory foam bed that’s infused with copper and comes with double-sided firmness, the Original Purple Mattress is constructed with a Smart Comfort Grid that’s made of hyper-elastic polymer. Both mattresses aim to cater to their sleepers and provide the ultimate sleep haven.

The Layla Mattress is uniquely constructed with memory foam that has been infused with copper. The copper isn’t just woven into the mattress foam, but it is also woven into the pillow cover. Since copper is one of the most conductive metals, it’ll help in keeping you cool and comfortable at night which is excellent if you suffer from frequent night sweats. In addition, copper also provides added support since it firms up under pressure. Copper is also known to have antimicrobial properties and will kill or inactivate microbes such as fungi, bacteria, and mold.

Either than having a memory foam infused copper mattress, the Layla model also has a two-sided firmness level known as the flippable firmness. While one side of the mattress is softer, the other side is firmer. You can select your preferred firmness level by flipping the mattress over to your desired side – it’s that easy.

Top Layer – Soft Cover

Cover-1.jpg

The top cover of the Layla Mattress is soft to the touch and made with a blend of materials – polyester, viscose and poly/lycra. While you can’t place the cover in the washing machine, you can remove the cover easily and send it for dry cleaning instead. To keep you warm at night, the cover also comes sewn in with a thermogel that helps in regulating temperature.

Second Layer – Memory Foam that has been infused with copper

first-layer-infused-with-copper.jpg

The second layer is made of a plush three inches of memory foam that has been infused with copper. Due to its thicker layer, this side makes up the softer side of the bed. You’ll get deep compression support as you slowly sink into the memory foam and maintain proper spinal alignment. The copper’s cooling properties will also help to keep you comfortable at night.

Third Layer – Convoluted Support Foam

Convoluted-Support-Foam.jpg

The third layer is two-inches of convoluted support foam that’s shaped like an egg crate to facilitate maximum airflow. It also serves as the transition layer for the softer side of the mattress. With the transition layer, it’ll help your body to adapt to the sturdier core support base below from the softer copper-infused memory foam above.

Fourth Layer – Base Support Foam

base-support-foam-layla-mattress.jpg

The support foam is 4.5 inches and forms the core support of the mattress. This layer is entirely made of polyfoam to form a solid foundation. Since the base support layer is rather thick, it also helps to prevent the feeling of getting stuck in the memory foam mattress.

Fifth Layer – Memory Foam that has been infused with copper

The final layer is the same as the second layer in terms of its components. However, this layer is made of a one-inch memory foam instead of three-inches of memory foam and is the firmer side of the mattress. While you’ll still sink into the memory foam, the base support foam below will provide added firmness and support to your body.

The Firmness

Plush-vs.-Firm.jpg

With the Layla Mattress’s unique flippable firmness feature, there are two sides to the Layla. While one side is softer and the other is firmer, there aren’t stark differences between the two. The softer side of the mattress rates at about a 5 on the firmness scale, putting it right in the middle of a medium firmness level. The firmer side, on the other hand, is only slightly firmer and sits at about a 6.5 on the firmness scale. The slight increase in firmness is largely due to the support from the base support foam.

Feel

Response.jpg

Even though they don’t differ much in firmness level, there’s a bit of a difference between the way that they feel. On the softer side of the bed, it feels plusher and you’ll get more of that sink in feeling from the memory foam. There’s still a bit of support that comes from the convoluted support foam – preventing you from sinking all the way in. The firmer side, on the other hand, has a bit more support than the softer side. You’ll still be able to get that traditional memory foam feeling but there’s an added bounce from the base support foam that props your body up a little more and prevents it from sinking too far in.

Unique Features

Copper-infused

new-layla-mattress-edge-support.jpg

The Layla model has a memory foam that’s infused with copper. Since copper is widely used in industrial and technological applications where the highest temperatures are tolerated, it’s an excellent conductor of heat and will prevent you from overheating during the course of the night. Copper is also supportive as the copper cells have a firming response at deep compression areas, it’s called variable support and is suited to all sleep positions. Copper is also well known for its antimicrobial properties and will form an anti-bacterial layer at the surface of the bed.

Double-Sided

flipping-the-new-layla-mattress.jpg

It’s hard to find a mattress that has two firmness levels in one, but the Layla has done exactly that. With this unique feature, you’ll be able to switch between two firmness levels just by flipping the bed. With one side being softer and the other being slightly firmer, you’ll no longer have to worry about finding a firmness level that suits you best.

The Purple company has become increasingly popular in recent years due to the unique construction of its mattresses. The purple line consists of two mattresses – the Original Purple Mattress and the All New Purple Mattress. While both mattresses are fantastic and come with their own set of features, we’ll be focusing on the Original Purple for this review. What’s interesting about the Original Purple Mattress, is that it’s the first mattresses in the world to have no pressure. How this is achieved, is through the mattress’s hyper-elastic polymer material. This material helps to release pressure and forms an intricate grid pattern that creates walls which can fold or support in accordance with the pressure it gets. To prevent you from overheating, the Original Purple is also constructed to allow air to flow freely, keeping you nice and cool. The bed also helps to provide support to your spine, relieve pressure and keep out allergens.

Top Layer – Cover

Purple-Mattress-cover.jpg

The top layer is a supremely soft cover that’s made with polyester, viscose and lycra. Either than the material being stretchy to help regulate temperature, it’s also thin and breathable to keep you feeling cool throughout the night.

Second Layer –Comfort Layer

Purple-Mattress-Layers-with-Text.jpg

The second layer is made up of Purple’s uniquely constructed Smart Comfort Grid. This grid is two-inches and made of a polymer material that’s hyper elastic. This material will help to support your body’s individual shape while relaxing under your pressure points. With its grid structure, it helps in distributing both weight and pressure relief throughout the entire bed. How this works, is that columns of polymer make up the grid structure and helps to support the body until a certain threshold of pressure is received. Once there’s sufficient pressure, the column will release and provide pressure relief to that area. Due to the columns, there’s also air pockets within the structure that allows air to flow freely.

Third Layer –Transition Layer

As the name suggests, the transition layer sits between the Smart Comfort Grid and the base below. Hence, it helps in transitioning the sleeper between the comfort layer above and the base layer below. It’s 3.25 inches and constructed with high-density soft poly foam. The transition layer also helps to provide compression support and intensifies the responsiveness from the Smart Comfort Grid.

Fourth Layer –Base

Purple-Mattress-edge.jpg

The final base layer does exactly what it’s supposed to do, it serves as a foundation to the bed and provides overall support and structure. It’s a thick four-inch layer that’s made of high-density poly foam that’s of medium firmness.

The Firmness

purple-original-mattress-firmness.jpg

Unlike the Layla model, the Original Purple model only has one firmness level. However, due to the way the bed is constructed with the Smart Comfort Grid, the Original Purple Mattress can cater to different individuals no matter their sleeping position or body weight. In general, however, the Original Purple has a firmness level of about a 6. Sitting at a 6, it isn’t overly firm or plush and veers towards the medium firmness level. Since the material releases in accordance with where there’s pressure, the mattress is suited to different sleeping positions. Back sleepers will be able to get the necessary support in their lumbar, and side sleepers will benefit from the mattress’s ability to evenly distribute pressure.

Feel

Purple-Mattress-contour.jpg

Since the Original Purple is adaptable, the mattress would feel different depending on the sleep position that you prefer along with your individual body type. Before delving into the mattress however, you’ll first notice the soft cover that’s also breathable. Thereafter, when you push into the mattress, you’ll notice the hyper-elastic polymer grid that quickly responds to pressure and is on the bouncier side. Thereafter, you’ll feel the high-density soft polyfoam transition layer below and notice how it helps to evenly distribute weight.

Unique Features

Hyper-Elastic Polymer

Purple-Mattress-stretch-out.jpg

Very few mattresses use hyper-elastic polymer material, which is interesting since the material comes with a plethora of unique benefits. As the grid is made of columns, it helps to facilitate air flow which will mitigate any overheating issues. With the uniquely constructed grid, you’ll be able to get an ideal balance with support from a firmer bed and pressure relief from a plusher mattress. To top it off, this hyper-elastic polymer material is also non-toxic, resistant to allergens, and recyclable.

Which One to Get?

Layla

layla-mattress-main-image.jpg

The Layla Mattress is one of the rare mattresses on the market that comes infused with copper. If you tend to avoid memory foam as you feel that it’s too stuffy and makes you uncomfortable, the Layla Mattress is the perfect memory foam mattress to help mitigate those issues. With the infusion of copper, thermogel in the cover and a convoluted support foam, there are many features of the Layla Mattress that help in dispersing heat. You’ll no longer have to worry about overheating and will sleep comfortably throughout the night. Either than cooling you down, the Layla model also has two firmness levels for the picky sleeper. If you’re not sure if you prefer a softer or firmer side, you can easily flip the mattress over to your preferred side. If you’re looking for firmness levels that have stark differences from each other, the Layla Mattress wouldn’t be an ideal purchase as the two firmness levels are significantly different from each other. However, there’s still a difference and you’ll be able to notice the added support on one side more than the other. Price wise, the Layla is slightly more affordable than the Purple. It’s also made of durable material, so you know that it’ll last for a number of years. The Layla Mattress also comes with a lifetime warranty so if anything happens, you’ll be able to get the mattress fixed or replaced – which is a huge help for a mattress that you plan to sleep on for many years to come.

Similar to the Layla Mattress, if you’re worried about overheating, the Original Purple Mattress would be the perfect buy. It not only has a cover that’s breathable, it also has a special grid formation that allows air to flow freely. Unlike the Layla Mattress, the Original Purple Mattress only comes in one firmness level. However, due to the technology that the Original Purple Mattress is constructed with, it’ll be able to suit a variety of sleeping positions. While it generally caters to most individuals, if you’re a side sleeper that’s on the heavier side, you might want to test the mattress out to see if it would provide adequate pressure relief. Sleepers that are on the lighter side should also test the mattress as there’s a chance that their weight may not be enough for the polymer grid to work. If you also have a tendency to gravitate towards memory foam, the Original Purple Mattress may not be for you as it’s a tad bouncier. Price wise, it’s a little more expensive than the Layla Mattress. However, with its unique technology and durable materials, it’s an ideal investment that will provide you with comfortable sleep for many nights to come.
