Layla Mattress VS Casper Original Mattress: What’s the Big Difference?

Previously, memory foam mattresses had dominated the mattress scene. It’s no surprise as memory foam is known to provide fantastic contouring support and ultimate comfort. However, as of late, mattress companies are trying to innovate and come up with mattresses that have unique technologies or are blended with different foams to cater to a wide variety of sleepers.

The Casper Original and the Layla Mattress are both products that have done exactly that. While the Layla has infused their memory foam with copper and added a two-sided firmness feature, the Casper uses not only memory foam but three other types of foam to provide the perfect sleep haven.

While it’s common to find a bed that’s constructed with a memory type of material, it’s rare to find a bed that’s constructed with foam that has a copper element. With the Layla, it’s made of foam that’s been infused with copper. With the addition of this element, it aims to provide sleepers with the additional benefits that copper provides. Copper is known to be a metal that’s excellent at conducting heat, hence, you won’t have to worry about feeling stuffy or overheating at night like those who suffer from night sweating. Copper also firms up when it’s under pressure, so you’ll get adequate support, and it can also destroy microbes such as mold and bacteria.

While having material infused with copper is certainly a treat, the Layla has taken it up a notch by also having a mattress with two different types of firmness levels. Depending on your preference, you can easily flip over the mattress to your desired side. With one side being softer and the other being firmer, you’ll be spoiled for choice.

Top Layer – Soft Cover

The cover of the Layla is supremely soft and made with a blend of different materials such as polyester and viscose. To keep you cool and comfortable at night, the soft cover also has a unique thermogel that’ll help with temperature regulation. You can also easily remove the cover, and have it sent for dry cleaning.

Second Layer – Memory Foam that has been infused with copper

The second layer and the bottom layer of the Layla are both made of memory type of materials. However, the difference is in the thickness of the layers. As this side of the mattress is catered to sleepers that prefer a plusher feel, the layer of special foam adds up to a total of three inches. With memory foam, you’ll get that traditional sink in feeling along with added compression support for all your bones and joints. The infusion of copper will also prevent you from feeling stuffy at night.

Third Layer – Convoluted Support Foam

The convoluted support foam layer is interestingly constructed to be shaped like an egg crate. With this egg crate design, it’ll allow air to flow freely and prevent you from overheating at night. Since this layer sits between the memory foam and the base support foam, it’s also a transition layer. With this layer, your body can slowly acclimate from the plush, high-quality foam to the firmer layer below.

Fourth Layer – Base Support Foam

As the name suggests, this layer serves to provide overall support for the entire bed. It’s constructed with polyfoam and sits at a thickness of 4.5 inches. With this support foam, you won’t sink into the foam and will instead get the necessary support that props your body up.

Fifth Layer – Memory Foam that has been infused with copper

As mentioned, the last layer is constructed with the same memory type foam as the second layer. However, unlike the first layer that’s made of three inches, this layer is only made of one-inch of memory foam. Since this side serves as the firmer side of the bed, the one-inch layer of memory foam means that you’ll still get that comfortable sink in feeling but will also notice the firmness of the base support foam a lot quicker.

The Firmness

In terms of firmness, there’s a slight difference depending on which side of the bed you sleep on. Obviously, the plusher side of the bed would feel softer in comparison to the firmer side. However, the differences between the two aren’t significant, in fact, there’s only a bit of a difference between both sides on the firmness scale. While one side sits at a 5, the other side sits at a 6.5. The firmer side has a rating of 6.5 as it only has one-inch of foam before you feel the support from the foam below it. The softer side, on the other hand, has a rating of 5 since it’s made of three-inches of plush memory foam.

Feel

Similar to the firmness level, there are slight differences in the way each side of the bed feels. When you sleep on the firmer side of the bed, you’ll still be able to get that traditional sink in feeling. However, as the base support foam is bouncier, you’ll get more support and it’ll also help to prop your body up.

For the softer foam, you’ll sink in a little more than the firmer side of the bed since the memory foam is made of three-inches. However, due to the convoluted support foam below, you’ll still get an added support – though not as significant as the firmer side.

Unique Features

Copper-infused

The Layla model is specially infused with copper as individuals tend to complain that foam mattresses are stuffy. With copper, it’s the perfect conductor of heat and will keep you cool and comfortable throughout the night. Copper also helps to support your body and has antimicrobial properties.

Double-Sided

The Layla Mattress’s double-sided firmness level is interesting as most beds only come in one firmness level. To switch sides, all you have to do is flip over the bed to the softer or firmer side. This is well suited to sleepers who are picky about the firmness of their bed.

Construction

While the Layla is constructed with memory foam that’s infused with copper, the Casper Original is built with four distinct layers that’s made of different types of foam. These four different layers of foam constitutes a new and improved Casper Original model which also has the addition of a new feature called zoned support. This unique interior layer consists of two different types of foam – softer foam for the lumbar region and firmer firm for the hip region. With two different firmness of foams, it aims to provide optimal comfort to each of these different areas while catering to individual sleepers.

Either than zoned support, the Casper Original model also comes with other types of foam such as the comfort foam which provides breathability and additional support. There’s also a special foam layer that contours to each individual body type and supports pressure points.

Top Layer – Soft Cover

The top layer of the Casper Original is a supremely soft cover that’s made of a blend of polyester. It’s also specially hand-sewn and uniquely custom-designed. The cover is also rather thick which means that if you toss and turn at night, there’s a lower chance of the cover bunching up. While some covers are hard to clean, the Casper Original Mattress’s soft cover is easy to remove and washable with the rest of your bedding.

Second Layer – Comfort Foam

The second layer is made of a comfort foam that uses a latex material that feels like foam. The latex material helps to add an additional bounce to the bed – which you’ll notice right away. Latex is also known to have cooling properties; hence, it’ll help to keep you comfortable at night. Due to the bounciness of this layer, it responds to pressure quickly and allows the sleeper to receive some satisfying pressure relief.

Third Layer – Memory Foam

After a layer of latex, the Casper Original is made with a memory type foam layer to provide that classic sink in the feeling of ultimate comfort. The memory foam will contour to your individual body type and help in relieving pressure.

Fourth Layer – Transition Foam

This transition foam layer is a uniquely constructed layer for the new Casper Original Mattress and is made of durable poly foam. However, instead of using just one type of foam, this layer is constructed with two different variations – a softer foam and a firmer foam. While the softer foam is located towards the bottom of the bed, the firmer foam is placed at the center of the mattress. As the name suggests, these mattresses are meant to zone in on sensitive parts of your body and provide the support that it needs. With zoned support, you’re meant to feel added relaxation and comfort in the regions that need it the most.

Fifth Layer – Support Foam

The final layer is made of a highly durable polyfoam that also supports and forms the foundation of the entire bed. Since there are many layers of foam within the mattress, the support foam will help to prop your body up and prevent you from sinking too far in.

The Firmness

While the firmness of the Casper Original model would differ depending on your weight and preferred sleep position, the overall general firmness of the bed veers towards the higher end of the firmness scale. It ranks at about a 7.5 which places it at a higher firmness than the average mattress. The reason why this mattress is firmer is that there’s the foundation layer – made of heavy-duty poly foam – that prevents you from sinking too far in, and the other layers work together to provide you with the right amount of contour and support. You’ll also notice the bounce from the latex which helps to make this mattress suited for different sleeping positions.

Feel

Since there are four different types of foam that’s used in the construction of the bed, you’ll notice that there’s quite a difference in comparison to a mattress that’s only constructed with one type of foam. First, you’ll notice the cover that’s soft to the touch with an adequate amount of thickness, thereafter you’ll sink into the soft foam. However, you won’t sink in too far as there’s a bounce from the latex to support your body. With the bounce of the latex, it’ll be easy to toss and turn at night – making it suitable for different types of sleep positions.

Unique Features

Zoned Support

The Casper Original is uniquely constructed with a zoned layer that’s meant to target parts of your body that require additional comfort and support. How this works, is that the transition layer is made of poly foam that comes in two different firmness levels. The softer layer is placed at the center of the mattress and helps to support your shoulder area. The firmer foam, on the other hand, is towards the bottom of the mattress and helps to support your hip area. The Casper Original Mattress specifically targets those areas as they are the most problematic areas for many individuals.

While the Layla Mattress is more suited to individuals that like a memory material feel if you’re not too big of a fan of memory materials, the Casper Original Mattress is worth a shot. Since the Casper Original Mattress is made of different types of foam, it strikes a balance between that soft memory foam feel and a firmer traditional mattress. The layers of foam also work together to provide the best contouring support and comfort for your body.
