Memory foam is what everyone’s talking about when it comes to the ultimate comfort level of sleeping. Unlike other products, it offers different levels and options in terms of what certain customers need. Everything from firmness to ventilation and even extra bonuses like gel composites.

So, what’s the big difference between a regular memory foam and gel memory foam, you ask? Well, regular memory foam was actually invented by NASA. That’s right, the space program! They created the material to help cushion astronauts as they blasted off into space. Apparently, it’s firm on the spine, so the foam helped alleviate the pressure during take off.

Breakdown Of The Isolus Gel Foam Topper

This topper is pretty exceptional, I have to say. The packaging is beautiful and very professional. Once you open the nice, labeled box, there’s yet another fancy box that contains the product. Then, inside is the topper, neatly rolled up and held within a thick, high quality plastic bag.

The gel infused memory foam pad is contained within a nice, durable rayon/bamboo cover that both protects the product but also protects your skin from rubbing up against the weird texture of the foam.

I think it’s a great mattress topper if you’re in the market for something soft, comfortable and good for side sleeping. However, I’m a back sleeper, and I found it to be wonderful. Not too thick, not too thin. Just the right amount of support. It could have something to do with my mattress underneath, but I was pleased with it and it stands up to other toppers in its category. But let’s break down the product so you can see.

What Sets This Product Apart?

Right off the bat, I think the packaging sets this product apart from others in its category. When a company takes care and attention and puts it into the packaging, that tells me the product must be amazing (which is not always the case, but it definitely was here).

After that, the other factors that set this apart from others is the quality. Yes, it’s heavy, but that’s because the foam is infused with a high-quality gel to keep you cool at night. The rayon bamboo cover is thick and super soft to touch. The slightly textured zigzag pattern looks great, but doesn’t impair the sleep experience at all.

Construction

The pad itself is 2.5 inches of memory foam that’s infused with a cooling gel to help disperse your body heat, rather than trap it in one place. It’s got small holes through the topper that helps with ventilation, too.

To save you from rubbing against the unpleasant feel of gel memory foam, the topper is sleeved in a thick, bamboo cover that’s hypoallergenic just like the foam. The stitching is done very well and holds up during use and washing. Even though it’s stated at 2.5 inches, it’s more like 3 inches once fully expanded.

There is a slight offgassing odor, though, when you first open it. The instructions state to lay it flat for 48 hours and allow it to ventilate. I was a bit put off by that. But after 48 hours, the smell was completely gone and my topper was ready to use. Luckily, I have a big bedroom and was able to lay it on my floor to air out.

Comfort

I had high hopes for this product, which can sometimes backfire on me. But not in this case. The topper definitely delivered on comfort. It’s dense enough that the support is there, even for side sleepers. I also loved the comfort of the bamboo cover. It wasn’t thin like pantyhose, which I often find with these products. It’s thick and has surface texture reminiscent of a fluffy microfiber.

When you first crawl onto it, it feels like a squishy gel pad, kind of like the ones for keyboards, but thicker. I worried that it may be a little too squishy and may not give me the support I need, but I was wrong. It was excellent.

What’s Promised

Buckle up, there’s a lot to cover in this area. First of all, this mattress topper is hypoallergenic, so the company promises an allergy-free sleep and it won’t hold dust or other allergens. 

Next, the product states that it’s CertiPUR Certified, which means that it’s been tested and approved for proper use and is totally safe to use in your home. Some memory foam products contain chemicals (which is where the unpleasant smell comes from), so it’s great to know that this isn’t an issue here.

While the topper itself isn’t machine washable, the cover – which protects the topper – is machine washable and super easy to remove. The built-in ventilation in the form of aeration holes promises to help you get a cool, breathable night’s sleep.

Heat Retention

Here’s the ultimate test, since gel memory foam’s sole purpose is to provide a foam option that doesn’t hold heat as much as the regular stuff. The Isolus holds true to its word. Even to touch, the awesome gel foam is cool to touch. During the night, my body temperature was nice and regulated and I remained cool while I slept.

I test all my toppers and mattresses for heat retention using a nifty heat gun. I was amazed at how fast this one cooled down after the heat source was removed. Within seconds!

Maintenance, Protection, Care and Warranty

Maintenance wise, there are pros and cons with this product. Like I mentioned before, the topper itself can’t be thoroughly washed. The foam may fall apart, especially in a washing machine. It’s recommended to spot clean only. But that’s where the awesome cover comes in. It’s totally machine washable and can be dried in the dryer on a low heat setting. However, it’s not a stain or water resistant type. So, if you truly want to protect your investment, I recommend a waterproof cover.

If you do need to spot clean it, just use warm soapy water and a clean rag to soak the spot and gently scrub. Then, with a dry towel, press the spot and soak up the excess liquid. Anything remaining should air dry over the course of a few hours.

Warranty

I was thoroughly pleased with what I found. The last few toppers I tried out had next to nothing for warranty, aside from the third party seller guarantees. But this gel memory foam topper is made by a company who stands behind their product. There’s a nice 3-year warranty that comes with it, so you can rest assured that if a problem ever arises (or you’re just not satisfied with it) you can return it, no questions asked!

How Easy Are Returns

I searched around a bit to see what people online had to say about returns and it seems to be fairly positive. With the 3-year warranty, all you have to do is call the number that comes on the box and someone will arrange a refund or an exchange. Pretty simple.

Consumer Feedback

Durability

Even though you can’t machine wash it, I still found the topper to be pretty durable and the online community seems to agree. Spot cleaning is easy and totally doable, and the cover is extremely durable due to its thick construction.

Odor

I would say this is Isolus’ only downfall. I assume that with the CertiPUR certification it’s safe to use, but the odor was definitely alarming. I didn’t like that at all. But like I mentioned before, it was completely gone after two days. A few online customers had mentioned the same. So if strong chemical odors are an issue for you, even for short periods of time, I would think twice.

Customer Support

Customer support seems to be great. There’s a 1-800 number that comes with the paperwork in the box, and customers online seem to have no issue calling and getting a response. That’s great to see.

Feedback on its Features

Everyone seemed to love the cooling qualities of the gel infusion and I have to agree. It was a wonderful sleeping experience. I highly recommend for those who really hate to be warm when sleeping but want the comfort of memory foam. Customers also loved the removable bamboo cover and that it could be washed.

Conclusion

All in all, I loved the Isolus! I’m very impressed with the superior quality of this product. I’m a back sleeper and I got the smooth support I like. But I also tried it out on my side for a while, just to see, and was impressed there, too. The foam conforms to your shape and support your hips where need be. It’s on the heavy side, so you may need someone to help you maneuver and get it in place.
