With so many different kinds of mattresses on the market today, it may be hard to find one that is true to their promise. The Hyphen is definitely one of those mattresses that lives up to its promise and I would like to share my thoughts with you about it.

Instead of creating a mattress that was just a bunch of fluff put together in layers and presented as luxurious, they decided to create their own from scratch with 1000’s of test mattresses before they had created the mattress they wanted.

The first thing that you are going to want to do when ordering a Hyphen is to obviously use the discount code SLEEPJUDGE for $50 off but then you are going to pick out your size, you have 6 to choose from. You are then going to want to add it to your cart. Once you head on over to checkout, you are going to be asked to fill out some simple information such as your name, address, and phone number. Unfortunately, the only financing that Hyphen has to offer is through PayPal credit.
The great thing about this ordering procedure is that there is only one option to choose from since it is such a universal mattress. You won’t have to choose the feel of the mattress or anything like that. It makes it so much simpler this way. When everything’s said and done, you will then be taken over to your shipping options.
Shipping
Shipping is via FedEx Ground and cannot be upgraded to any other shipping options. On the bright side, shipping is always free! For you folks in Alaska and Hawaii, your shipping is still free but if you need to return your mattress, the shipping cost for the return will be taken out of your total refund.
Since all Hyphen mattresses are made-to-order and shipped from their factory in Southern California, it could take anywhere from 2-5 days to get to you after the initial 48 hour order window in which they are generally sent out, depending on your location.
In my experience, if something is being sent from California to New York, it usually takes 4-5 days, maybe 6-7 if it falls on a weekend.
Your Hyphen will then arrive on your doorstep in a box that may or may not be bigger than your television. Let’s put it simply, it will come in a box that is 20” x 20” x 42” and in big letters you will see the word “Hyphen”.
My Thoughts About The Box
I think the blue and white box is pretty cool, to be completely honest. As I said above, the first thing you are going to notice are the big letters that spell out “Hyphen”. You are also going to see the phrase “Roam-Rest-Repeat”.
Once you open up the box, you will see a pamphlet that comes with a few inserts that tell you all about your mattress such as warranty information, how to set it up, what sets it apart from other mattresses and so on. You will also see two stickers to stick to whatever your heart desires. I love the fact that a lot of the mattresses I test come with pamphlets, to me, it is just good marketing.

This is my favorite section, the section in which I tell you what I did and did not like about the Hyphen.
What Sets It Apart?
The main thing that sets the Hyphen apart from other mattresses is it’s custom formulated Hyphen Foam. It contours to your body without sucking you in, provides excellent motion transfer and doesn’t sleep hot like other memory foams as you can see from our heat test.
Hyphen also supports a variety of charitable organizations to help people get a better night of sleep so that they can achieve their best day. When they get a returned mattress, they will then donate it to a local charity so that it’s not taking up space in a landfill.
Also, you aren’t going to find a mattress that offers so much at such a low price. You may find yourself paying thousands for a high-end luxury bed that only gives you half of what the Hyphen has to offer. So why not pay a fraction of that price for even more benefits, including a healthier sleeping environment?

Construction & Composition
The Hyphen is constructed of four simple layers instead of a bunch of layers inside of layers, in which half serve no purpose.
Antimicrobial Outer Fabric– This layer is breathable, anti-microbial, hypoallergenic, and machine washable.
2” Proprietary Hyphen Comfort Layer– This is by far my favorite layer. It is ventilated for cooler sleeping, hyper conductive, helps reduce motion transfer, relieves pressure, has adaptive temperature regulation features, it’s anti-microbial, breathable, and offers variable support.
2” Polyurethane Buoyant Transitional Layer– This is another layer that aids in pressure relief, motion transfer reduction, a healthy bounce, and is CertiPUR-US Certified.
6” Durable Polyurethane Base Support Layer– To put it simply, this is the layer that keeps everything in line and supported. It is CertiPUR-US Certified, aids in pressure relief, and offers variable support.
You may not actually be able to feel each one of these layers individually, but not to worry, all of the layers put together make a pretty comfortable bed.
The breathable foams are designed with open cell technology which helps the mattress to breathe.
The ventilation is done with small, strategically placed holes in the foam that act like a vent to increase the airflow around your body to help with temperature regulation.
The other foams are infused with natural elements that are up to 20,000 times more conductive than traditional polyurethane foam. This will help to actively move the excess heat away from your body.
Adaptive temperature regulation works with the proprietary foam to help adapt to changing temperatures. It will absorb and release energy as needed to help balance temperatures.
All of their foams are CertiPUR Certified, which means that they are made without ozone depleters, PBDE flame retardants, formaldehyde, phthalates, mercury, lead, and other heavy metals.

Comfort
Comfort plays a huge part in how a person sleeps. If your bed is uncomfortable, chances are that you aren’t going to sleep very well or you are going to wake up in pain.
I honestly love the way it feels. My husband thinks the same way as I do. It wasn’t too firm or too soft. We have no problem falling and staying asleep throughout the night.
Since we do give our mattresses a few weeks to break in, the more we slept on it, the softer it got, but not too soft.
Personally, I think that no matter what type of sleeper you are, you aren’t going to have an issue with the Hyphen once it is broken in. I am a stomach sleeper and I sleep great and wake up with no pain. My husband is a side & back sleeper and he hasn’t complained about being uncomfortable either. So I definitely believe that the Hyphen has a universal comfort level. This is definitely by far one of the most comfortable mattresses I have come across.
Support
The overall support of the Hyphen is pretty great. When I lay in it, I can feel all of the pressure in my back go away. My husband is the same way. He has a lot of back pain and I have yet to hear him complain in the morning about it. Also, we do not sink into it like other memory foam mattresses. Some memory foam is just too soft and I end up feeling like I am being swallowed whole by my bed, but not the Hyphen.
This mattress also helps to reduce pressure points throughout your body to help improve circulation and supports muscle recovery. The reduced pressure points help to maintain healthy blood flow.
Since it does seem to be a little more on the firm side of the spectrum, it may take some time to get use to, like I said earlier. It may also take more time to adjust if you are lighter in weight.
Once the Hyphen was broken in, it was giving us support in all of the right places. If i sleep on my side, I wasn’t waking up with sore hips. If I was sleeping on my stomach, I wasn’t waking up with sore shoulders and my neck felt pretty good too. So, all-in-all, the Hyphen has excellent support.
Edge Support
I am not opposed to having a lack in edge support. Since I am short and my bedframe is high, it takes a little bit of effort to get in and out. Since Hyphen has some slack to the edge support, it will sink in just a little bit to help me get in and out of bed.
I am quite impressed with the edge support of the Hyphen. Memory foam mattresses usually tend to have little to no edge support. So when you get out of bed in the morning, you have nothing to support you if you are on the edge. However, they Hyphen does have enough edge support to keep me from sliding off unwillingly.
In the past, I have suggested that mattresses with no edge support would be best in bed frames with raised edges, but I don’t think the same for the Hyphen. I think that it is perfectly fine the way it is.
Motion Isolation
Here is another area in which I was greatly impressed and so was the other reviewer. Since my husband is heavier in weight, I can usually feel every movement he makes. On the Hyphen, I don’t feel anything at all when he moves around, and he moves a lot. Honestly, he flops around like a fish out of water, but now it doesn’t bother me because I can’t feel it.
Other beds that I have tested in the past had considerable motion transfer, but not this one. I love that I can’t feel anything on the Hyphen, it is a huge bonus for me. I can’t think of anyone who wakes up in the middle of the night from their partner moving and isn’t bothered by it.
If you take a look at the video below, you will once again see Winston. Winston will jump up and down for his ball and watch how there is very little motion transfer when he lands. This can very closely simulate how someone would be moving around in bed. So, the lack of motion transfer makes for an undisturbed sleep.
Temperature Regulation Features
The Hyphen has a lot of temperature regulation features. It is ventilated for cooler sleeping, which means that the warm air isn’t going to stay inside of the mattress while you are sleeping. As you move around, the warm air will expel out of the mattress, allowing cool air to come back out.
It also has has adaptive temperature regulation features such as being breathable and adapting to your body’s changing temperature. As your body temperature rises, the mattress will work to take that body temperature and switch it out for cooler air. Your body temperature will then decrease, making it even more comfortable for you to sleep at night.
Heat Retention
If you are anything like me, you hate to wake up sweaty and sticky from a mattress that is causing you to overheat. If you keep your room at between 60-65 degrees, this is the ideal temperature for your mattress to keep you cool, especially for memory foam mattresses such as this one. A few nights, since it got a little chilly here in the mountains of New York, I had to turn my heater on. Since my bedroom went up to around 70 degrees, the mattress could not keep up with the heat. So, whenever I was finding myself getting too warm on any mattress I was on, I would slip on the Heat Managing Nacreous Mattress Pad by Slumber Cloud and would instantly feel cooler.
So, I tested the heat retention with a heating sock and a temperature gun. What I do is heat up my sock that has rice in it to around 130 degrees. I will then remove the sock from the mattress and record how long it takes for the temperature of the mattress to cool back down to normal body temperature, around 98 degrees. It took around 15 seconds to cool down, which is the fastest yet at the time of this review. The average cooling time for other mattresses we have tested is about 20-30 seconds.
Smell
If you aren’t a fan of a smelly bedroom thanks to those nasty chemical emissions that come out of traditional memory foam mattresses, then you are going to love the Hyphen and how much it does not smell. When you first open the mattress, you may notice a faint factory smell, but it’ll go away if you air out your room. Honestly, I couldn’t even smell a factory smell with mine, which I thought was great.
I think that the reason there is no smell is because it’s made with that CertiPUR-US certified foam, which helps with the indoor air quality. There are no harmful emissions and it is safer and healthier to sleep on. I have tested other mattresses that had a terrible smell to them which took weeks to air out, but not the Hyphen. This is definitely one of my favorite benefits.
Durability and Quality of Construction
Of course, as with any other mattress or product I test, I do a thorough inspection of threads, zippers and fabrics. I do think that the fabric is a little stretchy and may be a little flimsy, but with proper care, it should last.
I looked over the zipper and found it to be nice and tight. There is nothing worse than trying to zip something up and have the teeth break. On mattresses, if a tooth is broken your mattress is then more susceptible to bed bugs and dust mites. If your zipper were to break on the Hyphen, it could easily be fixed with a mattress encasement that will keep the bed bugs away.
As I mentioned earlier, the fabric is stretchy so you won’t have to worry about the fabric getting even more stretched out and cracking. I opened up the casing of the Hyphen to check out the insides and they do seem like they would last longer than some other cheaper fabrics that other mattresses are made from.

I certainly know it is for me. The Hyphen has a comfort layer that helps with adaptive temperature regulation, it is breathable and ventilated to help keep body temperature in a lower range. Also the fastest to recover to its normal temperature out of every memory foam mattress we’ve reviewed to date.
Do you like to sleep healthy?
When I say “sleep healthy” I mean sleep on a mattress that doesn’t have those nasty chemicals emitting into the room. The Hyphen is CertiPur-US certified which means that it promotes a healthier sleeping environment and is better for indoor air quality. It gets even better! It is also hypoallergenic and anti-microbial. So good news allergy sufferers, you may see some relief from that nighttime or early morning stuffy nose and itchy eyes.
Do you hate motion transfer?
I do. The Hyphen has been designed to cut down on the motion transfer. It is designed to give you the support of memory foam with just the right amount of bounce. You won’t be able to feel anyone move from the other side of the bed. Awesome, right?
Do you like your mattress to be clean?
For me, clean sheets just isn’t enough, especially if your husband sweats in the middle of the night. Once that stinkiness gets into the mattress, it’s there forever, which is why the Hyphen can be cleaned! The cover is washable, which is pretty nifty.
The Verdict
After sleeping on this mattress for a few weeks, doing all of my tests, taking every possible aspect into consideration, I can honestly conclude that this mattress is an ideal fit for most everyone.
As for myself and my husband, we absolutely love it and are making it our primary mattress (we have quite a few). We’re very impressed with the lack of heat retention and the motion transfer. I think that these are the two best qualities about the Hyphen, that and the fact that you are getting a great value, at a lower price point than other bed in a box companies.
This is definitely in my top 3 as for price, value, comfort, and quality. So, if you are looking for a mattress that is going to refresh and rejuvenate your body after a long day, this is definitely it.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is a foundation needed?
Not necessarily. You can put the Hyphen on any any firm, flat surface. You can put it on a platform, slats no more than 4 inches apart, box springs, floors, and even in a boat! From experience, I wouldn’t put it on a floor that holds a lot of moisture, such as basement floors. This will cause your mattress to get moldy and void your warranty.
Is a mattress protector needed?
They aren’t necessary, but they are great if you are worried about stains and spills from watching Netflix in bed with a glass of wine. Plus, there is no harm in having that extra protection for your bed and your warranty.
Does it work on adjustable beds?
Since the Hyphen is super flexible, it can work with an adjustable bed frame.
How easy are returns?
As with all mattresses, it is best if you don’t jump to conclusions and give yourself some time to get used to it. If you have slept on it for less than 100 nights, all you need to do is reach out to them and they will come pick it up, refund your money, and donate the mattress to charity.
Is there a warranty?
There sure is! With Hyphen, you are given a generous 20 year warranty. The warranty covers any manufacturer defects or irregular impressions/indentations.
