The good news is you can make your room smell good in simple and easy steps. Let’s take a look at what could be causing your room to smell bad and how to fix it.
Why Does Your Room Smell Bad?
A dirty bed and mold build-up are the main reasons for the stench in your bedroom. But here are other possible sources of bad smell in your bedroom.
Hot and humid days make the air stagnant so that it traps dust and smoke from the clothes, carpet, sheets, and other fabrics in the house. Make sure you have proper ventilation in your room to let out the polluted air.
Stale Sheets, Blankets, and Mattress
Because we release oil and sweat from our bodies, our bedsheets and blankets tend to smell. These linens should be replaced every two weeks to prevent the buildup of odor from your bedroom. Even your pillowcase catches natural oils and dead skin from your head. Wash your pillowcase, bed sheets, and blankets every two weeks to keep your room smelling fresh.
Your mattress is another source of the musty smell that absorbs tons of sweat. If it has been around for two years, imagine that it has three years’ worth of dirt and sweat. It gets even worse when you sleep with a partner because there’s double the sweat and oil.
But don’t be ashamed! We can’t wash our mattresses every two weeks like they’re fitted sheets. And we can’t buy a new mattress every month.
Mold or Mildew
The accumulation of mold or mildew behind your walls can lead to an unpleasant smell in your bedroom in the morning. This is more common among people who spill their drinks in their room. Wet spots in dark areas are where mold and mildew thrive. Always check behind your wall and inside your closet for molds caused by leaking pipes.
Take a look at your carpet and floors. Dirt, dust, food, and pet pee can accumulate on your floor over time. Check inaccessible areas in your bedroom, such as under the bed, behind your bedside table, and the corners of your room. To avoid a foul-smelling room, never miss a spot on the floor when vacuuming or mopping. Make sure to replace old rugs every 6 years.
Even a well-trained pet who doesn’t pee or poop in the house can still have that distinct smell that holds on to the furniture and floor. This is especially true for dogs who roll around in the mud. Bathe your pet every week and apply perfume so that the rest of your room smells great. This will also remove leftover dirt on their body that causes the bad odor.
For pet accidents, immediately clean them up and use a deodorizer. The smell can linger for a few weeks or months. Mold may also grow if you leave pet urine for too long on the carpet.
Dirty clothes kept in the room may lead to that pungent smell, especially if it piles up. Don’t store your dirty hamper in the closet in an attempt to cover it because it will only worsen.
Try to put your dirty clothes in the laundry area and wash them regularly. Consistent washing can remove the odor in your room. If you don’t have enough time to wash every few days, try to leave your door and window open so that the smell doesn’t get trapped.

How to Make Your Room Smell Good
Follow these tips to make your room smell good!
There are certain products made to refresh carpets, like carpet powder. Just sprinkle the powder evenly on the carpet then vacuum. Another method to deodorize carpet is by using baking soda. Sprinkle and leave it on the carpet for three to four hours. If it’s too stinky, you can leave it overnight and vacuum thoroughly.
You may also use a liquid to remove the foul odor from your carpet. Mix one cup of vinegar with two cups of water. Spray on the carpet then let it air dry. Adding a teaspoon of baking soda is recommended for stronger smells.
Spritzing scented spray on your bed sheets is not enough to remove the smell of sweat and oil. You need to wash them regularly to eliminate the funk. The method for cleaning your sheets depends on your bedding materials. But a cold wash is usually enough to keep them crisp. We also recommend washing them separately from clothes.
Use a good detergent with your choice of aroma, along with a fabric conditioner to keep them soft while you lay in bed.
Over-washing can also ruin the quality of your sheets. To keep them fresh for a longer time, take a shower before bedtime to remove the sweat and dirt from your body.
Clean Your Floors
Floors contain most of the dust and dirt in your room. If you have hardwood or tiled floors, use a damp mop soaked in ½ cup of vinegar and a gallon of water to avoid water damage.
If there are stains on your floor, a soft, clean cloth is needed to wipe the surface. You may use floor wax or detergent to break down the spot. To cover scratches, take a crayon of a similar color, rub it on the gap, and blow-dry the area.
Clean Your Mattress
Mattresses need to be cleaned and disinfected regularly to reduce the smell and extend their lifespan. It will also prevent allergens. Start by vacuuming your bare mattress with an upholstery attachment to get rid of any dust, dry skin, and mites.
Remove stains by using plain dish soap and cold water on a microfiber cloth, making sure to only spot-treat the mattress. Once it’s clean, sprinkle baking soda to absorb any remaining dirt and stench and vacuum the next day.
If your mattress hasn’t been cleaned for years, we recommend deep-cleaning using an enzyme cleaner to lift out deep stains. A layer of unscented litter should cover the mattress to absorb odor overnight. Finally, vacuum to remove the litter.
Change Your Mattress
How do you know when to replace a mattress instead of just cleaning it? The general guideline is to get a new mattress every 6 to 8 years. Some factors that affect the lifespan of mattresses include the material, your size and weight, maintenance and care, and if you share the mattress with pets.
Consider an anti-bacterial mattress that is designed to avoid the growth of dust mites and other bacteria. The materials will keep your bed dry and hypoallergenic to prevent these parasites from entering. Anti-bacterial mattresses also contain silver ions that keep your mattress clean and pure.
They also have breathable bands that promote air circulation while you’re sleeping to avoid trapping sweat and other forms of moisture.
If you’ve cleaned every corner of your room, replaced your rugs and sheets, and bathed your pets but it still reeks, it’s time to get an air freshener. Air fresheners are small and inexpensive but can give your room a long-lasting fragrance.
You can also consider other forms of home fragrance, such as diffusers, gel beads, and automatic sprays.
Wash the Walls
Before washing your walls, dust them off with a broom or vacuum to remove any dirt and debris. Then, mix 4 tablespoons of vinegar with a gallon of water. If you hate the smell of vinegar, try liquid dish soap instead. These mixtures are perfect for any type of wall. Then, dampen a sponge in the solution and gently scrub the wall.
To spot-clean stains, use a commercial cleaning solution with a soft towel. Rub the area in circular motions while preventing the cloth from dripping.
Once you’re done washing and spot-treating, wipe the wall with a damp sponge to remove the excess water.

Whatever is causing your room to smell bad, your first solution is to get the air flowing through proper ventilation. Opening the windows can already reduce the funk. Give your sheets and mattress a transformation, and clean your carpets, walls, and floor. Lastly, consider an air freshener to add fragrance to your bedroom.
