Helix is a personalized memory foam/pocketed microcoil mattress that you basically make yourself. With different thicknesses of each foam layer and a base of coils, you get a hybrid mattress that’s suited to your sleep preferences.

Additionally, you don’t have to settle for just one type of mattress to suit two people. If you’re a back sleeper and need a firmer surface than your side-sleeping partner who prefers a softer mattress, you can have both thanks to Helix’s split mattress option.

You also get your choice between twin, twin XL, full, queen, king, and California king. They’re all the standard sizes and a mere 10 inches tall, which means your standard sheets will still fit. That said, the dimensions on the sides could vary by up to an inch.

Whether you sleep on your side, stomach, back, or sprawl out starfish-style, the Helix Mattress will work for you. That’s because each mattress is made-to-order When you start the process of ordering a Helix Mattress, you should be  open and honest about your height, weight, and sleep preferences to ensure you get the best mattress for you.

As long as you’re a patient person, you may end up falling in love with your Helix Mattress. Like most foam mattresses, there’s a breaking-in period in which the mattress will soften. So, if your mattress feels extra firm in the first month of sleeping on it, give it some time. After a month or so, it should be more comfortable.

If you’re not a fan of the hugging feeling that comes with memory foam, you might want to skip the Helix Mattress all together. While it uses a proprietary blend that feels like a cross between memory foam and latex, you’ll still get that sink-in feeling despite the extra bounce. Another great addition to the Helix lineup is the option to build a mattress that will accommodate the plus size or big and tall individual. Whereas most mattresses (including the standard options through Helix) are intended to host sleepers of no more than 200 pounds, the Helix Nightfall includes an additional layer of support that accommodates greater weight and size. So you don’t have to miss out on the luxury and value just because of your bone structure or height.

The Helix Mattress company takes a while to get their mattresses from their factory to your door, so if you need a mattress immediately, this isn’t the bed for you. It takes about 10 days, on average, to get the mattress. Also, if you’re unwilling to give up your platform bed with wide-spaced slats, you may want to consider another mattress. Although the Helix Mattress works on many surfaces (including the floor) it needs a raised platform to have either a solid foundation or slats that are spaced no farther than 4 inches apart.

One of the biggest issues with the Helix Mattress is the same issue that comes up with other mattress companies that primarily use foam as a base and as a topper. The warranty may be years-long, but it’s useless if your mattress breaks down in the wrong layer. In the case of the Helix Mattress, you have to prove that the foam has broken down so much within the allotted time that the dips are obvious. You must show that the mattress has at least a 1-inch dip without putting pressure on the surface. It’s possible for low-density foam to break down quickly, yet not show any indentation unless you lay down on it. It’s at that point that you can feel your body-shaped indent and get that bottoming-out feeling. If this happens, your warranty is essentially useless and you’re stuck with an uncomfortable mattress.

Firmness- Just the Right Fit

The personalization of your Helix mattress works as follows. You answer several questions about how you sleep, what you prefer in terms of firmness and feel, and fill in some statistics (such as your height and weight). As soon as you submit the questionnaire and place your order, your personalized mattress is created in the company’s New York factory. While an algorithm determines the creation of your mattress, you can always contact a customer support representative by online chat, email, or phone for help with choosing the right fit for you.

However, if you’d like to choose your own mattress without taking the quiz, you have that option on the manufacturer website as well. Each of the different mattresses – with a total of 9 configurations that can please any consumer with any sleep style – has its own name (like the Helix Dusk) and those names correlate to the actual color of the mattress you order. This guarantees that you receive the actual firmness you desire or that you were matched with through the questionnaire.

Comfort

If you’re a fan of the hugging feeling that comes with memory foam but don’t like the lack of bounce this often produces, the Helix Mattress is a great option. It uses a proprietary blend that feels like a cross between memory foam and latex, you’ll still get that sink-in feeling despite the extra bounce.

Support

If you’ve tried products made entirely of foam, you may have struggled with a lack of support. This can lead to a lack of spinal alignment that ultimately leads to aches and pains. Helix incorporates the use of a strong innerspring unit, and it worked very well in my experience with the memory foam above to balance comfort and support. Ergo, you get the contour you expect from memory foam without the compromise in support that often results in this material type.

Features & Benefits

The Helix Mattress company makes a lot of claims about the quality of its materials and hassle-free customer support. In addition, the fact that these mattresses are fully customizable really increases the chance of you falling in love with the mattress. Let’s take a closer look at each layer of the mattress, the company, and what it promises you.

The Materials

The Helix mattress consists of several layers, some of which are interchangeable depending on how you answer your questionnaire. Typically, there is a layer order that’s followed. Only the thickness of each layer changes to accommodate your personal sleep style and preferences.

A Look at Each Layer

The Cover

Taking it from the top, Helix kicks things off with a specialized cover that is unique in the mattress industry. It’s removable and can be easily unzipped and removed for laundering so that you never have to worry about keeping your bedding clean. Additionally, beneath that removable cover is an interior cover, which creates what Helix calls their Two Touch Design. These two covers work together to create a cooler and more breathable sleep environment with plenty of airflow to stay cooler throughout the night.

And if that’s not enough, you can even opt for the Ultra Cool Cover, which is designed utilizing phase change material. This helps keep your body at a cooler temperature while you sleep, reducing the chance of sweating or overheating and helping you stay asleep longer.

Starting at the base, you get a layer of high-grade polyfoam that comes in a variety of densities to provide you with the right amount of support. For those who need a firmer surface, the base layer of polyfoam is going to be thicker and higher density. A high-grade and high-density foam is going to be extremely durable and should hold up for many years.

The Comfort Zone

On the top of your mattress sits a layer of Helix Mattress’ dynamic foam and/or a unique memory foam blend, depending on the firmness level chosen. The dynamic foam is a secret blend of ingredients that combines to create something akin to a foam-and-latex hybrid, while the memory plus foam is a blend of different types of memory foam to create a unique firmness and feel.

The dynamic foam doesn’t sleep as hot as memory foam (you can make it clear in your questionnaire that you sleep hot to get more heat-reducing material that will keep things cool at night). It’s this part of the mattress that provides a cradling effect and offers the most pressure-relieving comfort.

The Support Zone

The base kicks off with a 6 inch pocketed coil unit to  provide pressure relief. They also do what a foam mattress cannot: they provide the bounce and buoyancy that is familiar to traditional mattress users. Although these small springs give more bounce to your bed, they’re individually wrapped, so you shouldn’t feel movement as much as you would with a traditional innerspring coil mattress. These coils also add edge support through a reinforced perimeter that ensures you won’t experience any sagging on the edges of the bed.

The lineup ends with a layer of high-grade polyfoam that comes in a variety of densities to provide you with the right amount of support. For those who need a firmer surface, the base layer of polyfoam is going to be thicker and higher density. A high-grade and high-density foam is going to be extremely durable and should hold up for many years.

An additional layer can be added for a slightly higher cost to accommodate the plus size and big & tall community, which isn’t available in most mattresses. This layer is an additional 2 inches of high density material that negates sagging and support issues that typically arise for larger individuals, This makes the mattress 12 inches thick instead of 10. However, it’s definitely worth the investment if you are larger or heavier than average.

In the centre of your Helix Mattress are hundreds of tiny, pocketed coils that provide pressure relief. Environmentally Friendly

If you’re concerned about the chemicals used when processing the materials for your Helix Mattress, you may be reassured by the CertiPUR-US stamp of approval. Both the dynamic foam and the poly-foam used in your mattress are considered safe by the third-party program. These foams are made without harmful chemicals, and have a minimal impact on the air quality in your home.

You may notice a bit of a smell when you first open the box of your Helix Mattress. Off-gassing (which is the release of the chemicals that are used in the processing of foams) creates that scent, but it should be minimal and dissipate within a few days.

Personalization

The personalization of your Helix mattress works as follows. You answer several questions about how you sleep, what you prefer in terms of firmness and feel, and fill in some statistics (such as your height and weight). Helix Twilight

Helix Dawn

Helix Nightfall

Dual Comfort vs. Blended

When you fill out the form that customizes your Helix Mattress, you’ll answer questions for you and your sleep partner (if you have one). You can choose between the Dual Comfort and Blended options. However, the sleep quiz may suggest one or the other.

If you and your partner have wildly different sleep preferences, then you will both benefit from the Dual Comfort option. This mattress is split down the middle, which each side designed to suit you and your partner, respectively.

However, most couples won’t need to split their mattress and will prefer the Blended option. If your sleep needs are similar without any polarizing differences, the algorithm is likely going to suggest this option. Your needs needs and your partner’s will be taken into consideration to make a mattress that’s a good middle ground.

100-Night Trial

One of the best features of buying a mattress-in-a-box online is the sleep trials they typically come with. The Helix Mattress is no different. From the moment you order your mattress, you have 100 nights to try it out (manufacturing and delivery time falls under this window, so the trial is more like 90 nights). If your mattress isn’t perfect, you can return it free, and get a full refund.

If you do return the mattress, it isn’t resold or restocked. In fact, the company does its best to find a local place to donate it. If there’s no way that the Helix Mattress company can donate your mattress, it’s recycled instead.

Motion Isolation & Edges

Between the foams and the pocketed microcoils, you get a sleep surface that isolates movement when you sit, lie down, or shift in bed. So, if your partner gets up for a drink of water in the middle of the night, there should be little to no motion on the mattress that effects you. No more awkward wake ups in the middle of the night as a result of your sleep partner. You’ll sleep soundly even if your partner is having a rough night.

One of the downfalls of a mostly-foam mattress is that it offers little to no edge support. This creates a problem when you sit on the edge of the bed to put your socks and shoes on in the morning. You’re likely to slide right off. However, Helix has included additional reinforcement around the edges in the spring coil layer that reduces the chance of this slippy-dippy sensation. You’ll find that it performs better, whether you sleep toward the edge of the bed or simply sit up to put your shoes on.

Affordability

Premium foam mattresses can cost up to $12,000 (no joke), but average around $2,000 to $5,000. The Helix Mattress in a queen size costs less than $1,000. The company is able to offer an affordable, yet premium product because it cuts out the middleman: the mattress store. It’s made factory-direct for you, so you save money on those shipping and commission costs.

Note that there is an additional charge for the plus size or big and tall mattress option. However, at just under $200, it is definitely worth the value of the added layer to support more weigh. Since it’s hard to find mattresses designed for the heavier weight and larger body type, especially for such a low price, you’ll undoubtedly be satisfied by the quality and value.

Quick Note on Shipping

The custom experience requires a little bit of patience. I think this is a small price to pay for a made-to-order mattress.

The Warranty

The Helix Mattress includes a generous 10-year warranty that covers defects, but it comes with limitations, exceptions, and the burden of proof is on the consumer (like most warranties). Of course, you must be the original owner of the mattress to make use of this warranty and you need to save your receipt as proof of purchase.

As long as you follow all of the manufacturer’s expectations for use, your warranty will remain valid. That means you need to use a proper foundation (no adjustable bed frames or slats more than 4 inches apart) and that you can’t use the mattress improperly (no jumping on the bed!).

If your mattress starts to show an indentation of 1 inch or more (which typically happens when low-density foams break down), you could qualify for repair or a replacement mattress. As long as you show your mattress the respect that it deserves, Helix has your back.

It’s totally customizable, so you get to decide your firmness level and the amount of heat-reducing material that you may need. This mattress is a strong solution for two people who have opposing sleep needs because you can get a split mattress to suit both of you (or a happy-medium blended mattress option). With a 100-night trial that allows you to return the mattress for a full refund, there’s little to risk trying the Helix Mattress for yourself.
