Brief Overview of the Company and Their Product

If you’re looking for a sleep product that utilizes memory foam without the feeling of being stuck or overheating, you’re going to want to keep reading. This product was designed in Britain, and Eve utilizes a unique combination of next generation foams to provide all the benefits of a memory foam mattress. Memory foam is a popular choice for many sleepers as it provides unparalleled pressure relieving comfort. When this is combined with their patented active response layer, you also have a heat dissipating foam experience without the worry of waking in a sweat due to heat sinks like many other comparable memory foam choices. It took the company over 70,000 prototypes before their initial release of The Eve Mattress, and with new advances in technology and their valued consumer feedback – the new improved mattress is definitely worth taking a closer look at.

Let’s Start at the Cover

The cover of The Eve Mattress has been redesigned to be a highly breathable, moisture wicking, polyester/dorlastan blend cover made to provide a 4-way stretch for maximized movement and comfort. The top of the cover is removable via a lay flat zipper, and can be independently washed as well.

The sides of this mattress features a bright yellow color. I personally liked the color of this product. However, if you don’t, you’ll probably be covering it up with a fitted sheet, so it shouldn’t pose any aesthetic risks with your room’s color scheme. The side panels contain unique airflow qualities to further promote breathability. Its mesh spacer aids in maintaining air circulation. The materials have been tested and approved by industry experts, and both the top and the sides of the cover are Oeko-Tex certified (meaning they were made without any harsh chemicals or flame retardants). That being said, let’s see what’s contained within the cover!

A Look at the Layers

As mentioned, the top part of the cover is removable, and allows for easy access to the layers found below. This is where the real work went into the development of this final product, and we’re going to break them down starting at the top.

Next Generation Memory Foam

At the top, you’ll find a two-inch layer of contouring memory foam which is both highly breathable and temperature regulating. The density of it does take a moment to reform when you remove pressure, it does so pretty quickly for a memory foam of such high density. Take a look at the video above to see for yourself?

If you’re looking for memory foam without the “sinking in” feeling, this could be a good pick. I found that the material made it really easy for me to move around, and it also provided me with adequate pressure point relief.

Active Response Cooling Layer

Beneath the memory foam is a one-inch, active response layer, and this is important in keeping you from sinking into the comfort layers. It utilizes Variable Pressure Foaming technology, and this ensures environmentally-friendly processes were utilized during manufacturing. The newest structure provides long lasting comfort, plus it is 30 times more breathable than conventional memory foam. Plus, it dissipates any remaining body heat from the above layers for an even cooler, more relaxing night.

Supportive Base Layer

New to the improved design is the 18 cm supportive base layer. In response to consumer needs for a more supportive mattress that lasts, this is a thin layer that helps better distribute your weight evenly across the mattress to be supported by the thick, high density base layer foundation.

Anti-Slip Base

Finally, we arrive at the 6 ½ inch ultra-resilient foam base layer. It was designed to provide the right degree of bounce to ensure the combined mattress unit presses back in the right places. This is highly reactive with excellent durability that works with the supportive base layer to provide responsiveness without sacrificing support where it is needed. This combination allows the mattress to last much longer than the initial design.

High Density Base Layer

Beneath the mattress is an anti-slip base made from a durable, 100% polyester coated with an anti-slip surface. This allows you to take advantage of the mattress on more non-traditional frames that may lay flat and allow mattress slip if not secured.

Firmness Expectations

While online mattress shopping allows you to take advantage of a number of unique benefits, you can’t lay on prospects to examine firmness. However, I’ll show you how Eve worked out for me. But, first, we can get an idea by examining the information Eve makes available. For starters, the mattress is described as being a medium-firmness, and this statistically accommodates the majority of shoppers. Personally, I felt like it was a little on the firmer end of the medium spectrum, and it’s likely the base layer contributes to this feel. It’s also important to examine indentation load deflection. You can learn all about this measuring tool in our thorough overview, but, just for a quick reference, an ILD of 12 is very soft and 50 is very firm. The top layer has an ILD of 9 pounds, the active response layer an ILD of 11, and the support base 35, so, as a combined unit, this is pretty reflective of a medium product.

Medium Firmness Compatibility

If you’re just not sure if medium firmness is right for you, let’s review a few factors that can help you get an even better idea. First, calculate your BMI here. Once you get that number, use the following chart:

    BMI below 19 — SOFT

    BMI between 19 and 25 — MEDIUM

    BMI between 26 and 31 — FIRM

You should also consider your preferred sleeping position. Those who sleep on their back and sides usually find this firmness to offer the proper contour. If you usually sleep on your stomach, however, a firmer product often offers the support you need. However, this product did feel a little more on the firm side, so I think it could work well for stomach sleepers who don’t carry a lot of weight.

Mattress Sinkage Testing

Let’s go ahead and take a look at how much sinkage you can expect. I applied my 130 pounds to an area of around 9 by 7 inches, and the resulting sinkage was right about five inches. Most medium products I test sink around 6 ½ inches, so this indicates that my physical detection of a slightly firmer-than-medium mattress was accurate in comparison to other products I’ve tried.

Eve Edge Support

I also noted the sinkage you can expect on other areas of the mattress. Sitting on the side with my knees against the edge, there was a little bit of sinkage, but I was still pretty well supported. When I moved my knees further away, however, I did sink in quite a bit more.

It was also pretty easy for me to compress the corner using just my arms. Foam products are typically a little lacking in edge support, so this isn’t unusual. If you tend to find yourself on the edge of the bed a lot when you sleep, you may want to consider a larger model like the king or California king. At my weight, however, I was able to achieve pretty good support laying on the side of the bed.

Improved Offgassing

Offgassing is a common occurrence when dealing with brand new products, and it results when volatile organic compounds are released for a temporary time period. The last time The Sleep Judge had the chance to take a look at the Eve mattress, off gassing was a little bit of an issue. However, I didn’t notice much of a chemical smell when I opened this product. There was a very faint odor, but it only lasted a few hours. The Eve mattress is CertiPUR-US® Certified, and this means it meets rigorous testing standards are met for minimizing off-gassing.

Support and Comfort

Memory foam has unique visco elastic properties that became very popular in the 1990’s. However, there were a few quirks. For starters, the material tended to sleep hot since they cause you to sink in. Furthermore, that same sinking-in property can also make it difficult to move around and get in and out of bed. Eve has addressed these issues. In my experience, I had no trouble moving around or sleeping hot. I think this has a lot to do with the fact that this memory foam does respond very quickly. Furthermore, it’s only comprises about 20 percent of the combined mattress unit. The two lower layers aid in improving mobility.

Considering the fact that this product does offer that combination of support and comfort, it can be a good option for heavier people who often suffer with painful pressure points. The memory foam layer is thin enough to ensure you don’t sink in but thick enough to provide the comfort you’re looking for in a sleep product.

Eve Motion Isolation

If you’ll be using the Eve mattress with a sleeping partner, you want to make sure to consider motion transfer. Movement from one side of the mattress to the other can cause serious disruptions while you’re trying to sleep, and few things are more frustrating than drifting off only to be interrupted sporadically through the night. I tested the motion isolation you can expect with the Eve mattress using two 20 pound medicine balls. First, I dropped one ball on the bed from eye level, and it quickly came to rest. I then scooted that ball to the side and dropped the other ball on the other side of the mattress, also at eye level. Whether I dropped it on the opposite side or right next to the resting ball, the effect on the resting ball was minimal. Overall, the motion isolation you can expect with this mattress is very reflective of that of a memory foam product.

Temperature Regulation

One advantage we offer over what you would typically have available during traditional mattress shopping is a thermal test to see how well the mattress is able to regulate temperature. One of the biggest complaints in traditional memory foam is that it’s known to sleep hot. Ideally, you want your body temperature to fall just slightly in order to take advantage of the more restorative stages of sleep, so being able to maintain cool sleep is more important than we often think about.

I laid on the Eve mattress for 30 minutes in a room temperature of 64 degrees Fahrenheit. Using my thermal imaging camera, I recorded as the bed cooled off. It took about 8 minutes and 15 seconds for it to cool back down to room temperature. Of the mattresses I have tried so far, the average is right around 10 minutes, so Eve did pretty good at cooling off quickly.

Durability Expectations

Eve performs their own testing to help gain the trust of consumers when it comes to gauging the durability of their product. They use a machine that simulates 10 years worth of typical wear and tear. The mattress was able to maintain its support and comfort. As long as you do what you can to care for your mattress, there’s a good chance you can expect pretty good durability. That being said, foam density is a little lower compared to other offerings in this price range, so we are a little hesitant about the 2.5 pcf density in the comfort layer.

Maintenance, Protection, Care, and Warranty

Once you buy your Eve mattress, you want to ensure you are properly prepared to make the most of your investment. It’s up to you to understand how to care for your product as well as take the necessary steps if you decide it isn’t going to work for you. When you work with Eve, you can rest assured that you have a 10 year warranty. It’s never a bad idea to consider a mattress protector to go along with your mattress purchase.

100 Night Sleep Trial

While you don’t get the chance to lay on the mattress in a retail store, online mattresses often offer a sleep trial to make sure it’s going to work for you. Eve allows you to sleep on the mattress for 100 nights. They report that 95 percent of their customers do keep their product. However, if you aren’t among the majority, you can count on Eve providing a full refund within the first 100 nights.

Responsive Customer Service

I did have a few questions as I was taking a close look at the Eve mattress, and I thought it was worth noting that their online chat customer service agents are very responsive. Sharon quickly gave me the detailed information I needed. If you do have questions, I’d definitely recommend going to their website and chat with an available representative for quick answers.

Eve Reviews and Feedback

After using this product for a couple of weeks now, I think it offers pretty good features and benefits considering the low cost. I hope you’ve learned a thing or two and have a better idea of how you can expect it to work for you. Some of the information I have provided is based on my opinion. That’s why I wanted to see what other consumers had to say based on their experiences. Here are the main points that I was able to find:

Pros

  • Excellent customer service- they replaced a mattress for one customer that was lost by the delivery company.
  • Accommodating for back sleeping
  • Very limited off gassing
  • Excellent motion transfer reduction

Cons

  • Some complaints of the mattress being too firm
  • Low edge support
  • Mattress didn’t hold its firmness well over the course of a year
