Etekcity Air Mattress

It’s important to take your time when shopping for a new mattress, especially considering that is could easily last you as long as 10 years with proper maintenance. However, you don’t always need a permanent solution.

If you’re looking for something to take with you on vacations, use for the kids when they have friends over, or just have around in case you ever need a temporary solution, air mattresses can be an excellent option. There are many high-quality products on the market, and today we’re going to be taking a look at the experience I had using the twin-sized product I tried out from Etekcity.

This product is constructed using strong PVC to provide an extra-thick surface for durability, and I really love that it stands a full 18 inches off the ground. This makes it really easy to get in and out of and emulates the feeling of a real mattress very well.

It’s important to keep in mind that these products are not intended to be used daily. With that in mind, let’s examine my thoughts on this product.

Water resistant

Capacity: 400 – 500 pounds

Material: PVC materials

Simple Inflation and Deflation with Built-In Pump

  • Plug the power cord in the wall and turn the control dial clockwise.
  • Once the mattress is on firmness that feels right for you, turn the dial to the “off” position to keep it from losing air.
  • Make sure the Boston valve ( a manual valve located to the left of the pump) is sealed completely.

If the pump stays on for 15 minutes, it will overheat and stop working. This will require a cooldown of around 10 minutes. When not in use, the electrical cord can be conveniently housed in the small storage area to make life more convenient.

Etekcity doesn’t have a pump that kicks in to keep it inflated automatically. Like other air beds I’ve tried, I did notice a little bit of deflation several hours into sleeping, but it wasn’t a big deal to turn it on to air it back up to my preferred firmness.

Understanding PVC Stretching

Keep in mind that this product is made of PVC, and it naturally stretches and expands. This is what makes it possible to air up to varying firmnesses. After a few hours of being inflated or slept on, it’s normal for the initial firmness to soften as the PVC naturally expanded.

Many people confuse this with a leak. If you need a product that keeps your mattress topped off, check out our review on the Insta-Bed Raised air mattress. It has a Never Flat pump that kicks in when it loses air, but it does cost more.

Manual Inflation/Deflation Available

The thing I really liked about Etekcity is that it provides the option for manual inflation and deflation. This allows you to take your mattress out and about and use it even if there’s not an electrical outlet available. For me, this made it a great option for camping. Just make sure you’re able to set it up on a flat surface since it’s not designed to be used on outdoor terrain where rocks and sticks could poke holes in the material. For example, thick yoga mats or foam puzzle mats they sell for young kids to play on would work great, and they’re easy to transport.

You manually inflate the mattress by opening the Boston valve and connecting an air pump or hose to the mattress. To deflate manually, just open the valve back up. If you’re plugged in, you just turn the dial counterclockwise to quickly deflate the product to a completely flat position that makes storage simple. When you roll it up, any residual air will be forced out, and you can then store your air bed in the included carrying bag.

Mattress Comfort & Support

The vinyl material is pretty standard, and it features a thickness of 0.4 millimeters. With its multi-layered construction, I noticed it offered excellent stability, and I liked that the use of special PVC on the bottom that keeps the mattress from skidding. It was easy to move around, and the height makes it easy to transition in and out of.

The flocked top is made of two-layer PVC that’s water resistant and offers a little extra friction to keep you from sliding. It works well to add to comfort without compromising the product’s ability to stretch and retain air.

It’s kind of fuzzy and pretty comfortable, in my opinion. However, if you don’t like the way it feels, we bought a memory foam topper and kept it in place using a standard twin-size fitted sheet. I was amazed at how comfortable this made the product. It felt like I was laying in my actual bed and was definitely worth the added investment.

Etekcity Weight Limit

This combination of quality and stability allows for a pretty impressive weight limit for this product. The twin mattress is capable of supporting up to 400 pounds while the queen version can hold 500 pounds. PVC materials inside the mattress work with the outer materials to keep air leaks at bay and maintain such high weight limits.

Edge Support

Edge support is often lacking in air beds, and this can put a damper on mobility as well as make it easy to fall out of bed. Etekcity double stacks the inner chambers, and this works to improve both firmness and edge support. It also keeps the surface flatter.

Double-Stacking a Plus for Sleep Partners

For those who choose the queen version for two people to use, the double-stacking of the inner chambers can make it more comfortable for the other person when one sleep partner moves or sits down on the edge.

All PVC used in the construction of the Etekcity air bed is non-toxic and follows the strictest safety standards. I really liked the height. Air beds that are really low to the ground can be difficult to get in and out of, and I’ve noticed I’m more likely to wake up feeling the ground on my back when they lose air.

Air Leakage Expectations

I weigh 130 pounds, and I noticed I had to pretty consistently top the mattress off once during the night. My daughter, however, didn’t have trouble with deflation, and she weighs right around 60 pounds.
The air leakage expectations for the Etekcity air mattress is pretty average compared with other products I’ve tried, and the automatic pump makes it really easy to top it off in just a few seconds. If the room you’re in is very quiet, the pump will be a little loud, so it may disturb those around you, but it doesn’t take long.

Durability

We understand that air beds, generally speaking, aren’t built to last as long as a real mattress. They provide a temporary sleep solution intended for temporary use. Therefore, you shouldn’t use them every day.

Etekcity does have various features that add to its durability to make it last as long as possible. These include the double-stacked inner chambers, two PVC layers for water resistance, and special PVC on the bottom. To ensure yours lasts as long as possible, there are some tips you can follow:

  • Keep mattress stored in a cool, dry place.
  • If your mattress does develop a hole, use the provided patches and not tape or other materials.
  • Follow weight limits.
  • Don’t allow young children to jump on or otherwise misuse the product.
  • Always keep the air openings free of things like hair and lint.
  • Never attempt to open the pump casing. Not only does it not contain parts that can be repaired or serviced, opening the case exposes you to the possibility of electric shock, so leave that to customer service.
  • Allow at least two feet of clearance from wall or objects when inflating or deflating.
  • Ensure your space is well ventilated.

Size

The Etekcity twin-size option has dimensions of 75 x 39 x 18 in (191 x 99.1 x 45.7 cm). If you opt for the queen-size version, its dimensions are 80 x 60 x 22 in (203 x 152 x 56 cm). The queen-size model stands an additional four inches off the ground, and I think this works well to compensate the additional weight it’s designed to sustain.

Cost

For the quality you get with this product, I think the price was a great one. You can buy the twin model reviewed here for $89.99. If you want to upgrade to the queen, you can expect to pay $118.95. It comes complete with a convenient carrying bag for easy storage and travel.

Etekcity Reviews and Feedback

Its lightweight design and carrying bag make Etekcity a great option to use for travel, and I found it to retain air very well. It took just a little bit longer to air up than other twin air beds I’ve tried, but, for me, this was overshadowed by the fact that you do have a manual pump option through the secondary valve. Because of this, I think Etekcity is an excellent option if you’re planning a road trip and won’t have access to an outlet.

Some of what has been shared here are based on my opinion. So, to ensure we provided a well-rounded overview of this product, let’s take a look at what Etekcity customers have had to say about what they liked and didn’t like about this product:

Extra-thick surface makes for good durability

  • 18-inch height makes it easy to get in and out of bed
  • Both automatic and manual pump for convenience a plus
  • Multilayered construction offers excellent stability
  • Great edge support
  • Water-resistant flocked top is comfortable
  • Holds air well
  • Can be used without an electrical outlet
  • Doesn’t have an automatic pump to keep firmness consistent with automatic top-offs through the night

Conclusion

Overall, I had a great experience with the Etekcity air mattress. It did an excellent job of retaining air, and I found the flocked top to be comfortable while effective in keeping you from sliding. The extra thick surface and puncture-resistant materials seem to be very durable. Etekcity makes mobility easy both in transitioning in and out as well as in changing sleep positions.

Etekcity backs their quality with a one year warranty, and refunds are available during the first 30 days for manufacturer flaws. Its lightweight design, quality materials, and size options make this product one that should work well for the average person.
