DreamCloud Premier Mattress

This Mattress Could be for You If:

  • You’re a side sleeper who’s always wanted a strong innerspring unit but struggle with pressure points.
  • You’re a combination sleeper.
  • You have mobility issues or otherwise appreciate a mattress with good bounce and minimal motion transfer.
  • You need superior edge support.
  • You carry most of your weight in a particular area of your body (triangle and rhomboid body types).

We all want to do business with companies that listen, and we’re going to take some time to take a close look at a product that has recently employed some changes to make it even better than before. Awhile back, we checked out the DreamCloud mattress, and it was superior in its strong support through the use of a solid innerspring unit.

The company has listened to consumer feedback and incorporated some exciting changes to make their 2.1 version even better, and we’re going to embark on a layer-by-layer walk through the entire 15 inches to show you how it can be an excellent fit for couples and combination sleepers.

About DreamCloud

Launched in 2016, DreamCloud is part of a larger brand called Resident. They’re a direct-to-consumer company that caters customers with convenient shipping of home products ranging from rugs and side tables to couches, chairs, mattresses, and more. If you’ve checked out our review of the Nectar mattress, this is yet another brand they manage.

This “house of brands” makes it their goal to offer:

  • More choices in home products
  • Superior quality, style, and value
  • Excellent trial periods and warranties

DreamCloud Premier- How’s It Feel?

Let’s jump right into what you really want to know. How does the new and improved DreamCloud Premier mattress feel?

We’ll take a look at the layer lineup in a moment, but it does have a thick innerspring unit. Many people who don’t carry a whole lot of weight find it difficult to achieve adequate contour on these types of products. However, I think the fact that DreamCloud Premier incorporates the use of four inches of memory foam along with a 2 ½ inch transition layer provides excellent contour. You don’t feel the springs kicking in too soon.

Sleep Position Compatibility

  • Back sleepers will find their weight is very evenly distributed, and the transition foam does a great job keeping the hips neutral.
  • As I roll onto my side, I find the combination of memory foams and zoning in the innersprings do a great job reducing pressure points. The zoning considers the areas where you carry the most weight and switches up the firmness just slightly to keep support balanced and pressure points in check.
  • The layer lineup was also compatible with stomach sleeping, something that’s sometimes difficult to achieve with memory foam products.

DreamCloud PremierFirmness & Contour

The firmness is geared to meet the needs of a broad range of customers, and DreamCloud rates it as a 6.5/10. To balance strong support with cushiony comfort, they employed a couple of tactics:

  • To avoid back pain, they made sure it wasn’t too soft, but it’s not so firm as to cause hip and shoulder pain.
  • The coils do a great job kicking in with solid support, and they work very well with the softer foam layers above.

To give you a more objective idea of firmness, we can look at the indentation load deflections of the foams. You can learn how this measurement works in our compreshensive article on ILD, but, for the sake of time, just know:

  • 12 = very soft
  • 50 = very firm

The gel-infused memory foam weighs in at 10, so that’s very soft. This increases to 20 in the transitional foam, which begins to lead us up to the more rigid innersprings.

The Sleep Judge Firmness & Contour Test

To give you a better visual representation of how this layer lineup works in terms of firmness, I used our proprietary firmness and contour testing tool. The plusher products on this graph are closer to the bottom and firmer products nearer the top, and you can see DreamCloud does stack up in the medium firmness range.

To gauge how the layers work together to offer support and comfort, we can take a look at the blue, red, and yellow sections.

  • Blue represents the areas of the mattress with a larger degree of contour, primarily the memory foams. Notice the blue line with DreamCloud is longer than the others in the same firmness range. This shows very clearly how DreamCloud is able to provide firmness without compromising on comfy contour.
  • You may notice the yellow line is longer than both red and blue, and this indicates the layer lineup is notably compatible with side sleepers who carry a lot of weight either in their upper or lower bodies as this contour gauge allows for leveling of the spine to allow for the stacked weight of the heavier areas to sink into the mattress.

While DreamCloud Premier is suitable for all three sleeping positions, it can be of particular benefit for side-sleeping men with triangle, inverted triangle, and rhomboid body shapes and side-sleeping women with pear and triangle body types.

DreamCloud Premier Layer Lineup

Now that you know how it feels, let’s take a look at the anatomy of this product with a thorough analysis inside and out.

The Cover

Starting with the cover, we see an immediate change over the previous version in that it no longer features the tufting. It was ultimately removed because:

  1. It causes motion transfer as well as comfort issues.
  2. Those who carried more weight reported pain from the tufts.
  3. Those who didn’t carry much weight felt the tufting caused the sleep surface to feel uneven.

The new Luxe Quilted Eurotop reintroduces cashmere, and it’s now quilted into two inches of memory foam. This not only gives more visual loft to replace the tufted appearance, but it also adds to the comfort in the top layer where you really need it.

The three primary goals in the redesign of the cover were luxurious feel, durability, and breathability, and we’ll take a close look at each of these features throughout this review. Here’s a material breakdown of the DreamCloud cover:

  • 5% Cashmere
  • 30% Rayon
  • 65% Polyester

The bottom cover works to make sure your mattress stays in place by preventing shifting, warping, and bending that can sometimes be an issue in hybrid products.

The Comfort Zone

Moving our focus to the comfort zone, the EuroTop is followed by two inches of medical-grade, gel-infused memory foam. It’s designed to mimic the deep contour of traditional memory foam without all the heat buildup using gel to trap heat and draw it away from the body. It’s in this layer where side sleepers can enjoy the pressure relief necessary to keep heavier areas like the hips and shoulders from becoming uncomfortable.

The Support Layers

We’ve made our way through the first quarter of the mattress, and it’s here in layer three where we begin to transition into the support zone. The 2 ½ inch layer of soft polyfoam prevents you from feeling the springs and is a little firmer than the memory foam to make that switch from comfort to support a seamless one. It features a quick response to balance out the slower response of the memory foam, and this is highly effective at preventing excessive sinkage that memory foam is notorious for.

The Coil Unit

We then move on to the bulk of the DreamCloud Premier mattress in the eight-inch pocketed coil innerspring unit. Like the old version, it utilizes a five-zone system to reduce pressure points as it considers areas of the body where most of us carry more weight. It also prevents excessive sinkage that can throw the spine out of alignment.

I love the amount of bounce the coils provide, and I think they marry very well with the four inches of memory foam found in the comfort layers. Overall, the support offered by the coils does a great job at preventing roll off, and, since they’re individually wrapped, they’re able to contour to the natural curves of the body to reduce pressure points.

You don’t want to end off a layer lineup with innersprings, and DreamCloud Premier uses a half-inch of firm conventional polyfoam to wrap things up. It offers stability for the coils and gives the mattress as a whole structure. The entire mattress is 15 inches thick, so make sure you have a cover large enough to accommodate.

DreamCloud Premier Heat Transfer Capability

If you’ve ever had a mattress that retains heat, you know how difficult it can be to achieve a restful night’s sleep. It can be very hard to slip into REM sleep when your body temperature cannot slightly decrease, so you want a mattress that breathes well. If the memory foams scare you, you can rest assured DreamCloud has employed various measures to keep these notoriously stuffy materials cool:

  • The heat-treated cotton pad works to regulate temperature.
  • The memory foam beneath the Euro top contains small gel beads that absorb body heat.
  • The coils comprise over half of the mattress, and they breathe well due to their lack of material density.

Heat Transfer Test Results

Overall, the layer lineup is one that should be pretty conducive to cool sleep, so we performed our heat transfer test using thermal imaging technology to see how it worked out. As we observed the cooldown process, we found the new DreamCloud Premier mattress to cool off just a little bit quicker than average, so that’s good news.

It’s worth noting the old design did cool off slightly faster, and this could be due to the fact that it incorporated a layer of latex, a material that naturally breathes well. However, it was a minimal difference. Overall, the average person shouldn’t have any issues with hot sleeping on the DreamCloud Premier. However, if you have significant issues with hot sleeping, you may do better with a product that doesn’t use memory foam. If this sounds like you, latex could be a better fit.

Edge Support

If you have trouble moving around or getting in and out of bed, you’ll appreciate a mattress with good, solid edge support. This feature is also especially helpful for sleep partners who are more likely to sleep near the edge.

The great news is that the new 2.1 DreamCloud Premier model added two outer coil rows with a thicker gauge for improved edge support. This reduces the chances of rolling off the mattress and offers extra support when sitting or lying on the edge. You can see them at work keeping me very well supported as I sit with my weight placed on various areas of the edge.

With products featuring only foam layers, there’s often a lack of edge support, most notably on the corners. However, you can see DreamCloud Premier maintains its structure even when I sit on the corner. Sleep partners and those with mobility issues will be impressed with the solid support the new DreamCloud Premier mattress offers.

Motion Isolation

Sleep partners face a serious dilemma indeed when motion easily transfers across their sleep surface, and springs often raise understandable concerns. Before you restrict yourself to foam mattresses that often lack edge support, consider a few of the features DreamCloud Premier includes that counter the stigma coil units carry when it comes to motion transfer:

  • The pocketed coils are individually wrapped, so motion on one side of the mattress stays nearer to the point of impact.
  • The multiple foam layers work to absorb motion in the comfort zone where it really counts.
  • The tufting featured on the old version was removed.

To show you motion isolation in action, take a look at the video above where I drop a 20-pound medicine ball next to another of equal weight. It’s almost hard to believe over half of the mattress is composed of innersprings. I think the removal of the tufts and latex in the comfort zone helped minimize motion transfer and would suggest this product for sleep partners who want solid edge support without all the motion transfer.

Durability Expectations

We always like to take a moment to look at the durability expectations of the mattresses we test. You want yours to last as long as possible, so let’s examine a few metrics to give you an idea of how long it should hold up. Most wear and tear takes place in the comfort layers, so let’s take a look at the density of the foams.

Foam Densities

  • Super high-quality memory foam usually ranges between 3-4 pounds per cubic foot, and DreamCloud’s Premier weighs in at 2.5.
  • In the transitional foam, we want to see a pcf of 1.8 for maximum durability expectations, and here we find a pcf of 1.5.

Coil Count

In the coil unit, best durability in a queen mattress can be expected with a coil count of at least 800. DreamCloud’s Premier queen model has 682.

Obviously, each of these metrics are slightly below what we really want to see for maximum durability, so let’s discuss what this means for you. The price for a queen is $1,399. Considering the durability compromises we just saw, this is a little high. For a mattress of this quality level, a queen should run more around a thousand. With that being said, there is some good news.

  1. We provide a coupon code that knocks $200 off your order. Just enter promo code JUDGE200 at checkout.
  2. The cashmere cover is built to last.
  3. DreamCloud Premier reports the mattress should last at least 10 years if you use a proper mattress protector.

Although customer service told me there is no weight limit, I’d be reluctant to buy the DreamCloud Premier if I weighed over 300 pounds. If this describes you, check out these products that are more suitable. Keep in mind, many of them are more expensive, but they’ll offer the durability you need for long-lasting support and comfort.

With all this being said, I think the new DreamCloud Premier is a great offer with the $200 off for people under 300 pounds who change sleep positions throughout the night or are primarily side sleepers and want an innerspring mattress.

Maintenance, Protection, Care, and Warranty

All too often mattresses wear out quickly due to lack of maintenance. There are some things you can do to make it last.

  • DreamCloud recommends spot cleaning the cover only. There are no current replacement covers, but that’s something they are working to offer in the future, so stay tuned for more info on that.
  • You can’t flip this mattress, and, because of the zoning, it’s also not recommended to rotate. I’d suggest sleep partners with big differences in weight switch spots every three to four months.

Who We Recommend the DreamCloud Premier Mattress For

I love a company that incorporates consumer feedback into their product design, and I think DreamCloud made a few great steps to make their product more fitting for the general public. I think this could be an excellent fit for you if:

  • You’re a side sleeper who’s always wanted a strong innerspring unit but struggle with pressure points.
  • You’re a combination sleeper.
  • You have mobility issues or otherwise appreciate a mattress with good bounce and minimal motion transfer.
  • You need superior edge support.
  • You are top or bottom heavy.

If you weigh more than 300 pounds, you may notice premature wear and tear due to the lower-than-ideal coil count and foam densities. If this is you, I think you’d do well with a latex mattress.

DreamCloud Premier: Our Final Verdict

We’ve covered a lot during the course of this review, so let’s start wrapping up. I love that DreamCloud takes feedback into consideration and makes changes to keep customers happy, and their new and improved mattress is a perfect example of their dedication to customer satisfaction.

I spoke with customer service twice during my review process, and they were very responsive. I like that they didn’t beat around the bush in answering my questions, and they’re available seven days per week via chat, phone, or email.

Because of its unique balance of support and comfort, I think this makes for a great option for people who are top or bottom heavy, and the strong innersprings offer excellent support for back sleeping while the memory foam kicks in to provide pressure relief for side sleeping. It also offers superior edge support for those of you who sleep near the edge or have mobility issues.

I think if you weigh under three hundred pounds and use our promo code for $200 off your order, this is an excellent product. Once purchased, you get a full 365 nights to try it out. Studies have shown it takes between 30-60 days to adapt to a new mattress, so they do ask that you try it out at least 30 days before you initiate a return.

You’re protected with a Lifetime Warranty, and financing is available through Affirm for qualified buyers with offers as low as $68 per month for a queen with the possibility of 0% APR.

This mattress takes anywhere from 1-3 days to fully decompress after unboxing. If you don’t feel like going through the unboxing process, you can choose white glove delivery service for an added fee.

In a nutshell, if you appreciate solid support, want something that balances bounce and motion isolation well, and weigh less than three hundred pounds, I think the upgraded DreamCloud Premier mattress could be a great choice.
