Daniel Haynes, a cotton gin builder, began constructing cotton-filled mattresses to friends and family. His products grew in popularity, and the phrase “mattresses from Sealy” was coined to identify these premium sleep products of long ago.

Sealy has had over 13 decades of trial and error to better understand what consumers want, and the fact that they’re still in business tells us they listen to feedback and are able to offer what people are looking for in a new mattress. So, let’s take a look at what they came up with when it comes to the construction of this product.

A Look Inside the Cocoon Chill by Sealy

It’s what the inside that counts, and this couldn’t be more true when it comes to mattresses. The premium, stretch-knit cover is designed to help you sleep cool and infused with a proprietary “Phase Change Material.” This is your first line of defense in cool sleeping, and we’ll explain it in further detail in a moment when we discuss breathability.

The first layer beneath the cover is composed of two inches of Perfect Fit memory foam that adapts to your body size, shape and sleep position. Memory foam of the past had a tendency to envelop sleepers and make it hard to move around. However, the very first memory foam layer makes getting in and out of bed and adjusting yourself simple. Easy movement is further facilitated by the layers beneath the memory foam.

Right above the bottom support layer is the 2 inch personalized comfort layer. You get to choose between Cocoon’s soft layer for a cozier “in-the-bed” feel and their firmer “on-the-bed” feel. Plusher products are better for those who don’t carry much weight while I’d recommend the firmer version if you do weigh more or sleep on your stomach a lot. I have the plusher personalized comfort layer, so that’s what we’ll be analyzing as we dig further into this product.

The layers are supported by final 6 inch layer of essential support foam. It’s engineered to be highly durable and resilient. If you do decide to go with the firm option, it’s comprised of 2 inches of Perfect Fit Memory Foam and 8 inches of Essential Support Foam. Either way, you can rest assured in knowing the materials are CertiPUR-US certified.

Firmness and Sinkage Expectations

For the plusher product, let’s take a look at what you can expect when it comes to sinkage. I stood in the middle of the mattress to see how much my 130 pounds, when applied to a 9 by 13 inch area, caused me to sink into the mattress. The average is around 6 ¾ inch for a medium product. Here, you can see I sunk in about seven inches.

Considering Cocoon’s firmness scale you’ll find on their website, it can be a little difficult to judge just how firm the two options are as they both kind of meet up in the middle of the entire spectrum. Based on this test, it would appear that the Cocoon soft mattress is slightly plusher than an average medium sleep product. This could be a great fit for light weight people who often feel they don’t get to enjoy the feel of the deeper layers of their mattress.

Product Feel and Comfort

When I laid on my Cocoon Chill, I could definitely feel the memory foam at work as I felt myself sink in a little bit. I could also noticeably feel how the material conformed primarily in my hip and shoulder areas. However, there is a definite point where the memory foam stops and the lower-level foams kick in to act in providing uplifting support.

You can see what I’m talking about when you take a look at our video. You can see how quickly the mattress responds when I apply pressure and release it quickly. It wouldn’t even appear that it contained memory foam at all. As a memory foam veteran since its introduction into the industry, I’m impressed. There’s usually a little bit of lag time in memory foam, but the Cocoon resumes its shape almost immediately. If you’ve always liked the idea of memory foam but didn’t want to feel like you were sinking into your sleep product, this could be a great option to consider. Both the Chill and Classic versions are capable of holding up to 500 pounds.

Cocoon Motion Transfer Reduction

If you’ll be using your Cocoon Chill with a sleep partner, you want to ensure you know what to expect when it comes to motion transfer reduction. Motion transfer is when you’re able to feel your partner’s movements through the mattress materials when they move or get in and out of bed, and it can be highly disruptive. Ideally, you want to sleep straight through the night without being disturbed, and memory foam is typically able to keep motion transfer low. We checked to see what you can expect using two 20 pound medicine balls.

First, we took a look at the bounce of this product. I expected it to be low considering the presence of the memory foam. The ball bounced 1 ½ times before coming to a rest. I scooted it over to the side and dropped another 20 pound ball in different areas next to the resting ball. The memory foam doesn’t disappoint in keeping motion transfer low, and I think this product is accommodating for sleep partners in this aspect.

Breathability and Temperature Regulation

Since you’re looking into the Cocoon Chill mattress by Sealy, there’s a good chance you’re looking for something to help you sleep cool. If that’s the case, I think you’ve definitely come across a product that could offer just what you’re looking for. Cocoon mentions on their website that this product is cool to the touch, and I can attest that this is true. When I touch the cover, it does feel very cool.

I personally suffer with hot feet when I sleep. I noticed sleeping on Cocoon Chill that I could cool them off by moving them onto different exposed areas of the mattress. I’d encourage you to use a sheet and, better yet, a mattress protector, so you won’t actually feel this “cool to the touch” sensation under these conditions. However, I think this goes to show that the use of the Phase Change Material does seem to make a difference in absorbing and dissipating heat.

Let’s take a moment to get a better understanding of what phase change material is. This material works to maintain a regulated temperature by absorbing heat as the external temperature rises. It’s capable of storing and releasing large amounts of energy to the point of melting or solidification. Basically, phase change material gradually adjusts to an equilibrium with the sleeper. It’s being used in a growing number of ways including:

• solar cooking
• thermal protection of food
• textiles designed to keep you cool

Heat Transfer Test

We took a look at how well the Cocoon mattress would perform after laying on it for 30 minutes in a room temperature of 64 degrees Fahrenheit. Average cooldown time for the products I’ve tested is around ten minutes. Cocoon was able to achieve room temperature in just 8 minutes. Considering memory foam is in use, I think this was an exceptional time. I felt notably cool sleeping on the Cocoon Chill as the name implies I would, and I think this is an excellent sleep solution if hot sleeping is a primary concern.

CertiPUR-US Certified

The Cocoon Chill by Sealy uses materials that are CertiPUR-US® certified, and this tells you quite a bit about the quality you can expect. This certification indicates that the materials used are:

• Made without ozone depleters
• Made without mercury, lead, and other heavy metals
• Made without phthalates regulated by the Consumer Product Safety Commission

Durability Expectation

Let’s get an idea of the durability expectations by taking a look at the density of each layer. For memory foam, you want a density of 4-5 pounds. In the Cocoon mattress by Sealy, we find a density of 3 pounds in the Perfect Fit memory foam layer and 1.8 pounds in the Comfort Layer memory foam.

The density you want to look for in the support foam is at least 1.5 pounds. The Cocoon is 1.8 pounds in the transition and base layers which helps to make up for the 3 lbs in the comfort layer. Since the more weight you carry will cause more wear and tear, I’d recommend those who are heavier to strongly consider the firm option. It features three pound memory foam in the comfort layer with a larger eight-inch chunk of the high-dense support base.

After spending about 1 ½ weeks taking a look at the Cocoon Chill, I felt that it really lives up to its name in breathability claims. There is nearly zero motion transfer, and I know I found peace-of-mind in knowing that Sealy is a reputable company that has been in business for more than 100 years. If you suffer with painful pressure points but have shunned memory foam in the past due to hot sleeping and sinking in, I think this could be the breath of fresh air you’ve been looking for.

However, when you rely on the traditional mattress business model, a lot of what you’re investing in includes middleman markups and costly commissions paid to pushy salesmen who don’t necessarily have your best interests in mind. Since Cocoon Chill offers two firmness settings, I think this helps add diversity that allows them to cater to a larger market. I do have a few concerns about the density found in the memory foam of this product. However, considering the price, you’re still getting a pretty good deal. Higher densities do come at a higher price.
