A Look at the Casper Wave Inside and Out

Thin Knit Cover

The Casper Wave is a total of 13 inches thick, and this is split up into five strategic layers to properly balance support and comfort. At the top is a very thin knit cover.

I like this feature because it allows for better engagement with the comfort layers. I always recommend a mattress protector, but, when in place, they do reduce the ability to feel the comfort layers of your mattress. A very thin cover like you’ll find on the Casper Wave helps prevent this.

Comfort Zone

Directly beneath the cover we find 1 inch of weightless flo foam in the first comfort layer. This material was developed by Casper and features an elastic polymer that creates a feel that’s both soft and resilient.Moving down to layer two, we find 1 ½ inches of latex. I like that it’s placed so close to the top because latex offers great natural bounce. If you carry a lot of weight and are scared of the thought of a product that includes memory foam that might make you feel stuck, latex works very well in countering this. It’s also an excellent material in reducing pressure points, and it’s a natural material which is great for allergy sufferers and reduces offgassing.

It works really well with the next 1 ½  inch layer of memory foam. You can pick up on the contouring effect this provides, and this is the very reason hybrid mattresses are so popular. Different materials can work to essentially dilute the negative aspects of others to create an optimum feel. In this case, the sinky feeling of memory foam is countered with the bouncy latex. I always appreciate the genius of this particular combination, and Casper was the first company to put it to use.

Hyper Targeted Support

Next, we start to move into the support layers, and this begins with another 1 ½ inches of high resiliency foam with polymer channel inserts. There are 36 to 38 channels depending on mattress size, and they work to naturally adjust to the hips and shoulders. This Hyper Targeted Support does a great job at mimicking your body to provide targeted firmness for ergonomic spinal alignment.

The precision contouring alleviates pressure in the shoulders and further aligns the entire core. This is a concept often used in innersprings with zoning in the coil unit, but you don’t often see this kind of accommodation in foam products, so I thought this was a unique element that makes the Casper Wave really stand out.

Last but not least, this product has a 7 ½  inch contour-cut support layer.

Casper Wave Mattress Performance

Now that you know what’s inside the Casper Wave and have a better understanding of how it works, let’s talk a moment about how it feels. The human body tends to carry more weight in the hip and shoulder areas, and you really can feel the Hyper Targeted Support™ in action.

If you’re a side sleeper, you may get uncomfortable as your shoulder juts into the mattress causing pressure, but this is significantly reduced. The more weight you carry, the more you’re going to pick up on this feature since it appears four inches below the surface of the mattress.

Compression Based on Pressure Applied

I really like that compression is based on the amount of pressure applied. This allows the Wave to properly accommodate the individual and is a plus for sleep partners who have varied needs. For example, if you don’t weigh much but your sleep partner does, I don’t expect you’ll have trouble with the lighter person not engaging with the layers comfortably.

There is a 90 pound difference between me and my sleep partner, yet we can both pick up on the contour of the memory foam and support of the lower layers. I really like the amount of bounce offered by the latex, and this makes getting in and out of bed as well as moving around really easy.

Firmness and Sinkage Expectations

You only get one firmness option with the Casper Wave, and it’s gauged as a medium. To give you an idea of the accuracy of this estimate, let’s take a moment to see how it measures up to other medium mattresses I’ve tried out.

When I apply my 130 pounds standing upright on a medium firm product, I typically sink in right around six and a half inches. In the case of the Casper Wave, you can see I sink in right at 6 inches.

Based on this, you can expect this product to be just a little more firm than average, but not rock solid by any means. Since this mattress does cater more toward those who carry more weight, I think this is very appropriate. It’s slightly on the firmer end of the spectrum without a huge risk of disturbing a sleep partner who may prefer something plusher.

Motion Transfer Reduction

However, where bounce is great in terms of mobility, it can cause problems when it comes to motion transfer. If you have a sleep partner, it can be disturbing when they move around while you’re trying to sleep. Again, this is where the hybrid concept comes into play.

Where bouncy latex lacks in motion isolation the memory foam picks up the slack just as the latex helps make up for the sinky feel memory foam causes. The Casper Wave did an excellent job at keeping motion transfer low, and this gives me even more confidence in recommending this product for sleep partners.

Heat Reduction Capabilities

If you’re a really hot sleeper, the original Casper mattress is your best bet. Advanced testing and molecular engineering went into its design and development, and its open-cell foams help naturally promote airflow throughout the night. The Casper Wave did about average in terms of cooling.

As we do with all the products we test here at The Sleep Judge, I lied on the mattress for a half hour in a room at 64 degrees Fahrenheit. It took the mattress 10 minutes to cool off, and this is the average. I think it’s going to do a good job at keeping you sleeping cool as its balance of contour and resilience allows it to breathe well despite the use of visco foam.

Durability Expectations

The Casper Wave is described as the summit of Casper’s unparalleled research and development. It’s the result of intensive design and engineering work in Casper’s new lab in San Francisco and was only released last year.

While we all like to own the latest and greatest advanced technology, the downside is that we don’t have any real-life examples to share in terms of durability expectations. Where we’d normally take a look at densities of the various materials, Casper keeps this information confidential. However, I still have reason to believe you can count on this product lasting:

• • Thirteen percent of this product is made of latex, and it’s one of the most durable materials on the market.
  • Its placement in layer two further promotes durability as the comfort layer is where most wear and tear takes place. This makes the Wave less susceptible to the development of sagging.
  • To keep you protected, Casper offers a 10 year warranty, and this is around how long you can expect a quality mattress to hold up.

Edge Support

Although this product doesn’t feature an innerspring unit, it performed very well in terms of edge support. This is going to be important if you spend a lot of time sitting on the edge or if you have mobility limitations that make it difficult to get in and out of bed.

The base layer does a really good job at keeping me well supported as I place myself on various areas of the edge. Although you do see increased sinkage on the corner, this is completely normal in all-foam products.

This product should be adequate for those who carry more weight, and the latex layer, since it’s placed so close to the surface, adds that extra bounce to help you transition out of bed.

Maintenance, Protection, Care and Warranty

Of the three Casper products, the Wave is definitely on the more luxurious end, and I think it’s a perfect fit for sleep partners, especially if one or both carry a lot of weight and/or suffer with painful pressure points. It offers superior spinal alignment and is very effective in reducing pressure points in the shoulder area.

In fact, its unique ergonomic design is even endorsed by the American Chiropractic Association and was awarded Good Housekeeping’s 2018 ‘Lab Pick’. To further its list of credentials, the latex foam layer and knit cover are Oeko-Tex certified, and all other layers are Certi-Pur certified.

You may have watched our unboxing, but, if you’re not keen on the idea of getting it set up on your own, Casper does offer convenient white glove delivery. It’s the only one of the three to include this feature, so you can kick back and relax while someone else sets it up and disposes of the trash. This is also a great feature since you know you’ll be home when the product arrives and it won’t be sitting outside following delivery.
