You can get just about anything you want or need online. Today, a mattress like 15½ inch Brentwood Home Oceano complete with 10½ total inches of coils fits into a box this size.

With the ability to shop online for your next sleep product, you open yourself up to hundreds of options. While this helps you more efficiently find one best suited to your needs, it also requires you to do some research before you enter your credit card information.

I recently received an Oceano queen-sized mattress of my own so I could check it out and share my experience with you guys, so let’s learn a little more about this product and see if it could work out for your needs.

Best-Selling Mattress for Over a Year

Brentwood Home is headquartered in Los Angeles, and they’re not a new face in the mattress industry. Unlike many startups that followed the online mattress boom, they’ve been making mattresses and other products for the home for more than 30 years, and they rely on local artisans for quality production.

The Oceano mattress has been Brentwood Home’s best-selling bed for over a year running. Considering their vast array of sleep products available, I think this in itself says a lot.

A Look at the Layers of the Oceano Mattress

Oceano is a hybrid product that incorporates the use of varied layers and material types to cut down on issues like motion transfer and help promote breathability. Multiple layers can be very helpful in the achievement of quality sleep, but that’s highly reliant on the right combination. So, before we go any further, let’s take a look at what Brentwood Home came up with and talk about how everything including the cover works to help you sleep comfortably.

Tencel and Polyester Cover

Let’s start with the cover. It’s made of a blend of 70 percent polyester and 30 percent Tencel. Tencel fibers are extracted from raw material wood and are known for being skin-friendly and hygienic. If you have sensitive skin or are concerned with keeping your carbon footprint minimal, this is a plus.

Tencel fibers are also more absorbent than cotton and work to help your mattress breathe. I found the cover’s durable, 4-way stretch allowed me to enjoy the ½ inch of New Zealand wool that lies directly below.

Comfort Layers

Wool fibers are naturally adapted to keep you at a steady temperature, and I find its placement in the top layer appropriate for comfort. If you aren’t a big fan of the sinking-in feeling of memory foam but do enjoy its contour, the wool layer acts as an effective buffer for the two inches of memory foam you’ll find in the next layer. This combination can work great for those who carry more weight as it adjusts to the curves of your body, relieving sensitive pressure points.

I prefer more direct contact with memory foam. If you have a small build and enjoy that additional engagement, the addition of a memory foam mattress topper can balance things out. Sleep partners can enjoy the added motion isolation memory foam has to offer, and it’s medium plush, making it more adaptable for those with varied preferences.

Support Level

Below the memory foam, we begin to transition to the support level with a 2½ inch layer of Softech Individually-Wrapped Coils. They do a great job at distributing weight and supporting your body evenly across the surface. Since they are wrapped individually, they adapt to your movements one by one, cutting down on motion transfer.

This first layer of coils lies atop a 2-inch layer of Airflux Foam designed to let air flow freely for cooling and freshness. Here, in a moment, we’ll take a look at how the combination of Airlux Foam, coils, and natural components work to keep the mattress cool.

Zoning to Reduce Pressure Points

The majority of support is found in the 8-inch layer of 5-zone Quantum Edge Combi-zone Individually Wrapped Coils. Zoning involves the designation of varied support levels to most effectively achieve spinal alignment. Let’s break it down. The five zones consider the different levels of pressure your body exerts across the mattress, and these include the:

• Head and shoulders
• Upper body
• Hips
• Lower body
• Lower legs

The hip area is the heaviest in the body, so a little more give is incorporated into this section. The shoulders are more protrusive, so this area is slightly plusher. Down near your feet, there will be less support. I found my Oceano mattress to do a great job distributing my weight evenly, providing that weightless feeling we all want to enjoy after a long day. I think the combination of memory foam and zoning can be especially helpful if you’ve struggled to find a way to enjoy both contour and proper support.

As a final layer of support, we reach a half inch layer of base foam.

Oceano Mattress Performance

With a better idea of how the Oceano mattress works to keep you both comfortable and supported, let’s give you a better idea of how it feels. The two layers of coils provide more than enough bounce to easily transition into different sleeping positions, and I’m able to pick up on the zoning as it allocates added support to my hip area.

When I roll over on my side, the slightly plusher firmness in the top of the mattress allows for my shoulders to more naturally sink to minimize this common pressure point. (Since this mattress is zoned, make sure you place the mattress on your frame with the Brentwood Home logo at the foot).

I think the wool layer on top adds an effective buffer to prevent excessive sinkage into the memory foam layer. Laying on my back, I can feel how the coils help accommodate the lumbar curvature found in the lower spine, and this was my favorite sleeping position on my Oceano mattress.

Overall, I think this mattress has a lot to offer from those who carry a lot of weight and need a reliable product capable of offering strong support without compromising on comfort.

Firmness, Sinkage, and ILD

The Oceano mattress is Medium Firm. This can be difficult to gauge shopping online, so let’s take a look at what you can expect. As discussed, you’re going to find different firmnesses in the various zones.

In a typical medium product, I sink into the mattress 6 ½ inches standing upright. When I stand in the middle, I sink 6 ½ inches, and this is the hip zone where you want extra ‘give’. However, at the top and bottom of the mattress, I sink 6 inches. Overall, this averages to around 6 ¼ inches of sinkage, and this is pretty indicative of a medium product.

Oceano Indentation Load Deflection

We can also look at firmness in terms of the indentation load deflection. Twelve is considered very soft, and 50 is very firm. We find an ILD of 14 in the memory foam and 30 in both the Airflux and base foams. This average firmness level can be accommodating for sleep partners with different firmness preferences. If you’re underweight, you might find medium firmness takes away from your ability to engage with the comfort layer. If this is the case, I’d recommend the supplemental purchase of a mattress topper.

Motion Isolation Capabilities

Spring units have a bad reputation for its excessive bounce that can prove highly disruptive for sleep partners. However, hybrid products work to minimize this problem by working in materials that reduce motion transfer. This makes it possible to enjoy a degree of bounce without creating a shockwave for your sleep partner. Furthermore, since the coils are wrapped individually, this further isolates energy to the point of impact.

When someone changed sleep positions next to me. I was not significantly disturbed, and the very slight movement shouldn’t be enough to wake you up unless you’re a very light sleeper. We also dropped a 20-pound medicine ball next to another. The dropped ball experienced pretty good bounce with very low impact on the resting ball. I think this combination of bounce and motion isolation capability could prove specifically beneficial for older couples beginning to experience difficulty in mobility.

Heat Transfer Capabilities

Brentwood Home employed a variety of tactics to ensure the Oceano mattress is able to effectively regulate temperature. You want your body temp to lower slightly as you drift off, and this product relies heavily on the two spring units. Coils breathe well naturally, and they work with the open-cell technology in the memory foam, New Zealand wool, and Tencel fibers in the cover to keep you from sleeping hot.

To see how this combination measures up to other products I’ve tried, we took a look at the cooldown process after I laid on the mattress for 30 minutes in a room temperature of 64 degrees Fahrenheit. Average is around 10 minutes, and it took Oceano 10 ½. This exemplifies how Oceano is effectively keeping up with the competition in temperature regulation, and I had no trouble maintaining a comfortable body temperature sleeping on this product.

Durability Expectations

In the past, a lot of us relied heavily on the guidance of mattress salesmen as we picked out a new sleep product. The trouble is, salesmen are financially-motivated and often make efforts to hide less attractive features of the products they sell.

This isn’t the case at all with the Oceano mattress. Brentwood Homes very clearly provides these details on their website. In the memory foam, the density is 4 pounds per cubic foot, a full pound more than what you want to shoot for in terms of durability. I think this level of quality at the comfort level was a smart move since this is where most wear and tear occurs. The base foam’s density is 1.8 pcf, a good sign in polyfoam.

To consider the longevity of the springs, we have to look at coil count. For a product that lasts, a queen needs to have no less than 800 coils. Oceano has one 1,353 coils in the Softech layer and 1,130 the Quantum Edge layer. As a combined unit, I think it’s safe to say Brentwood Home didn’t take any shortcuts in the development of their Oceano model.

Edge Support

Let’s take a moment to examine edge support. This is important to consider since strong edge support makes it easy to get in and out of bed as well as keeps you properly supported if you sleep near the edge. Products including spring units typically perform very well.

I was able to effortlessly transition in this product and felt very well-supported whether laying or sitting on the edge and even on the corners of the Oceano mattress. Reinforced coils around the perimeter keep the edges rigid and supportive and could prove highly beneficial for anyone with mobility limitations.

Conclusion

Off-gassing stuck around for about three days following unboxing. If you have a sensitive nose, you may want to give it a few days to air out. However, using my fitted sheet, I really couldn’t pick up the smell much past the first night.

Other than this minor issue, I think Brentwood Home did a great job in producing a quality product well-suited for the average mattress shopper. The cover is soft and hygienic and considers the environment, and you can literally bounce out of bed to get your day started. Overall, this is an excellent sleep solution for anyone looking for a long-term product.
