Unboxing/First Impression

Quick Look at the Materials

Let’s get started by looking at the composition of this product. Directly beneath the very soft New Zealand wool cover lies 3 ½ inches of gel memory foam. This is what provides the “sinking in” feeling when you lay on this product. With the use of gel, sleepers are able to enjoy a cooler sleeping experience.

Under the memory foam is the two inch Airlux ventilated layer. This provides added breathability, so I’m ready to test it out using our thermal imaging camera to see how quickly it’s able to cool down after laying on it for 30 minutes. Be sure to check back to read our full review!

The mattress is supported by a seven inch therapeutic base foam. Both the base foam and ventilated layers feature an indentation load deflection of 30 pounds. You can learn more about how ILD works here, but, for now, just understand that 50 is very firm and 12 is very plush. The gel memory foam has an ILD of 10 which is much softer. Overall, the combined units arrive at an medium firmness that’s accommodating for the majority of sleepers.

What I Think So Far

I slept on this product last night, and I’d like to go ahead and let you know what I think of it so far!

— Firmness

The Brentwood Bamboo Gel 13 offers a medium firmness, and this can be a great option for back, side, and stomach sleepers. I typically enjoy a plusher product. However, I am a big fan of the memory foam top layer. It conformed well with my body, and I woke up free of any kind of aches and pains. If you like the feel of memory foam but tend to sleep hot, I think this could be a great option for you to explore further.

— Responsiveness

As a combined unit, the Brentwood mattress bounces back quickly. The only exception is the memory foam top layer. Because the material is visco elastic, it takes a couple of seconds for it to return to its original form. If you sleep with someone else, you’ll appreciate the fact that the material combination limits motion transfer. If you do have trouble getting in and out of bed, memory foam may not be your best option. However, I really enjoyed the overall responsiveness of this product.

New Zealand Wool Cover

We’ve been covering natural products the past few weeks, and I’ve had the chance to experience New Zealand wool in the Avocado mattress. I was impressed with the way it felt. So far, I expect to have the same experience with Brentwood’s Bamboo Gel 13. It’s very soft and, since they combine certified nontoxic and natural materials to create a safe sleeping environment, I have been very satisfied with the fact that I’m reducing my carbon footprint!

I’m really excited to get to know this product better, and I’ll be sharing my findings with you. Make sure to stay tuned for our comprehensive review.
