The Best Memory Foam Mattress For Hip Pain And Shoulder Pain

1. Amerisleep Liberty Memory Foam Mattress – Editor's Choice

Highlights

  • Sizes Available: Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, California King, Split King
  • Cover: Celliant
  • Comfort Layer: 3” Bio-Pur Memory Foam
  • Middle Layer: 2” Affinity Layer
  • Support Layer: 7” Bio-Care Layer
  • Warranty / Return: 20 years limited / 100 day trial

Pros

  • All natural memory foam composition.
  • Memory foam layers become progressively firm to yield both conformity and compressive support.
  • Celliant infused cover redirects your heat to soothe minor aches.
  • Foam has CertiPUR-US Certification.
  • Extensive 20 year warranty coupled with 100 nights trial period.

Cons

  • Celliant fiber makes it a bit hot to sleep in.
  • Edge support leaves something to be desired.

The Amerisleep Liberty memory foam mattress, made entirely from multiple layers of bio-degradable memory foam, is a rejuvenating, reasonably luxurious sleeping solution designed to provide soft, conforming, pressure relieving comfort.

The Liberty happens to be one of the most eco-friendly mattresses in the industry – the foam is CertiPUR-US certified, with a top cover infused with Celliant – a proprietary material that conserves the heat exuded by your body and reflects it towards you to promote healing and bolster pain relief.

The top memory foam layer (3”) sports an open cell design, yielding both contouring support and decent thermal dissipation. The middle layer (2”) is a bit firmer, and is meant to create a transition in terms of response and support between the comfort and base layers. The bottom layer (7”) offers firm, deep support to ensure optimal spinal alignment.

A standout feature of this mattress is that besides the pain relief offered by multiple memory foam layers, the Celliant fibers reflect your body heat to increase your blood flow, which also alleviates minor aches in your bones and muscles.

That said, the reflected heat also means you’ll be sleeping a little bit warmer than comparable products. Also, since the mattress is wholly memory foam, it offers somewhat reduced edge support. The product comes with a 20 year limited warranty, as well as a 100 nights trial period, an indicator of Amerisleep’s confidence in their product.

2. Spindle Mattress

Highlights

  • Sizes Available: Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King
  • Cover: Organic cotton cover (1/2”)
  • Comfort Layer: Continuous Pour Natural Dunlop Latex (3”, 17.5-20.5 lbs. ILD)
  • Middle Layer: Continuous Pour Natural Dunlop Latex (3”, 17.5-20.5 lbs. ILD)
  • Support Layer: Continuous Pour Natural Dunlop Latex (3”, 29.5-32.5 lbs. ILD)
  • Warranty / Return: 10 years limited

Pros

  • Responsive, bouncy support combined with slightly plush surface feel.
  • Natural latex offers ample contouring and motion isolation, for a long period of time.
  • Extra firm bottom layer offers deep support to keep your body shape aligned.
  • Conforms to chemical safety standards.
  • 10 year limited warranty.

Cons

  • Lacking in edge support.
  • Not for obese individuals.

The Spindle mattress’s top and middle layers, both 3” deep, have an ILD of 17.5 – 20.5 lbs., ensuring medium firm, springy and conforming support that latex is known for. However, the bottom layer has a significantly higher ILD of 29.5 – 32.5, which provides the firm support needed for properly sustaining the whole weight of your body.

The organic cotton cover, filled with a woolen batting, perfectly complements the overall springy responsiveness of the mattress with a surface that “hugs” you gently without altering the unique feel of latex.

It is also worth noting that Spindle lets you order additional latex comfort layers to customize the feel of your mattress by swapping out the existing layers. Furthermore, the latex conforms to OEKO-Tex standards for not containing any harmful substances that could compromise your health.

The mattress does a good job of preventing motion transfer, so if you sleep with a restless partner, this is again a good choice. In terms of temperature regulation, latex is known for excellent thermal dissipation and correspondingly, the Spindle mattress performs more than adequately (although it isn’t the coolest solution out there).

One snag though: edge support is less than desirable because of the all-latex design of the product. Furthermore, even the latex layer with the highest ILD won’t be able to sustain the weight of an obese person for long (31+ BMI).

All things considered, when operated within its recommended parameters (and the manufacturer is pretty open about the limitations in terms of weight), the Spindle has my vote for the best mattress for side sleepers with hip pain / shoulder pain who prioritize responsivity.

It is backed by a 10 year warranty from the manufacturer, and if you donate it to a charity within a year and send the proof to Spindle, they will refund you the cost less $300.

3. Natural Escape Mattress

Highlights

  • Sizes Available: Twin, Twin XL, Full, Full XL, Queen, King, California King
  • Cover: Organic cotton and natural wool quilted cover (1/2”)
  • Comfort Layer: Natural Dunlop Latex (3”, 18-22 lbs. ILD)
  • Support Layer: 3 zone pocketed coil innerspring core (15.5 lbs. ILD head, foot; 14.5 lbs. ILD middle)
  • Warranty / Return: 10 years limited / One-time 100 day trial

Pros

  • Firm yet conforming support solution for weighty individuals.
  • Certified organic and free of harmful compounds.
  • Luxurious cotton and natural wool top cover.
  • Decent heat dissipation.
  • Satisfactory edge support.
  • 10 year limited warranty and one-time 100 day trial.

Cons

  • Not for those who like plush sleeping surface.

The top of the mattress consists of organic cotton and all-natural wool, bearing a Greenguard Gold certification. The sheep wool has been tested to be free of pesticides, herbicides and other heavy metal substances by a third party lab. The cover feels comfortable, and the natural wool improves thermal regulation and serves as de facto flame retardant.

The comfort layer underneath is made from OEKO-Tex certified natural Dunlop latex with an ILD of 18-22, resulting in a medium-firm feel that is suitable for a wide range of consumers. It provides immediately responsive, contouring support for your body – but with a touch of firmness (this isn’t the mattress for those like a plush, sinking sensation).

Underneath the latex lies a pocketed coil innerspring support core – the pocketed coil structure consists of hundreds of independent springs that respond differentially to the various pressure points of your body – so the conforming support runs through and through with this mattress, in spite of its firmness.

In the case Natural Escape mattress though, there is an additional subtlety involved: the pocketed spring core is divided into three zones based on the thickness (gauge). The areas that support your shoulders and your thighs have 15.5 gauge springs, whereas the one that supports your lower back and hips (where most of your weight is concentrated), has 14.5 gauge springs.

This enables the mattress to provide you with support where you need it most, which further improves its ability to tailor its profile to your body, thereby alleviating (and preventing) bodily pain caused by a contorted physical posture.

The innerspring structure also ensures ample edge support, and the mattress offers excellent thermal dissipation as well. It comes with a 10 year limited warranty, as well as a 100 day return trial (although this only works for the first purchase per household).

If your weight lies at the higher side of the scale, then a firm mattress is a foregone conclusion for reasons of sustainability – but for individuals dealing with shoulder and back pain, a firm, non-responsive mattress is hardly a remedy. If you’re in this pickle, then you may want to consider the latex / innerspring hybrid that is My Green Mattress Natural Escape.

4. Helix Mattress

Highlights

  • Sizes Available: Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, California King
  • Thin 100% polyester cover: Organic cotton and natural wool quilted cover (1/2”)
  • Comfort Layer: Helix Dynamic Foam (2-4”, 10-36 lbs. ILD)
  • Middle Layer: Pocketed microcoils (1350+ count for Queen, 2-4”, 10-36 ILD)
  • Support Layer: Poly Memory Foam Base (2-4”, 10-36 lbs. ILD)
  • Warranty / Return: 10 years limited / 100 day trial

Pros

  • Comfort layer has qualities of both latex and memory foam.
  • Microcoil intermediate layer offers a firm yet responsive cushion for aching pressure points.
  • Freedom to choose the degree of support / comfort offered.
  • Can combine two vastly different mattress halves for partners.
  • 10 year limited warranty and 100 day free trial.
  • Moderately affordable.

Cons

  • Slow thermal dissipation.
  • Lacking edge support.
  • Smells during off gassing.
  • Cover bunches up.

The mattress combines three distinct layers of materials: a proprietary latex / memory foam blend on top, followed by pocketed microcoils in the intermediate layer, and lastly, a polyfoam / memory foam blend at the bottom, to yield superb responsivity, contouring and deep support.

The interesting thing about the Helix mattress is that you can customize the thickness of these layers based on how you answer an online quiz from the manufacturer that ascertains your sleep preferences covering, among other things, your sleep posture, and troublesome pressure points such as hips and shoulders.

Furthermore, you can and opt for a half-and-half merger of two separate mattresses if you and your partner have vastly different sleep styles – few mattress makers offer this kind of freedom, and at such an affordable price point too.

On the flip side, the product does have somewhat slow heat dissipation, lackluster edge support and minor off gassing issues. Furthermore, the thin cover tends to bunch up after being pressed on, but can be easily straightened up again.

None of these problems are deal breakers though, and if you want to specify exactly how you want your shoulder and back issues to be tackled by your mattress, this is the one for you. The product comes with a 10 year limited warranty, as well as a 100 day free trial.

The Helix mattress is a thoroughly customizable sleeping experience (for one or two individuals) in more than one sense – if you have ever wished to control how your mattress feels, to suit your exact needs, this is worth checking out.

5. Dreamfoam Ultimate Dreams EuroTop Latex Mattress

Highlights

  • Sizes Available: Twin, Twin XL, Full, Full XL, Queen, Short Queen, King, California King, Split California King
  • Thin 100% polyester cover: Bamboo fiber Europtop cover (1.5”)
  • Comfort Layer: Talalay Latex (3”)
  • Support Layer: HD Polyfoam Base (8”, 2 lb./cu.ft.)
  • Warranty / Return: 10-20 years limited / 90 day trial

Pros

  • Reasonably priced for its high end comfort, support and breathability.
  • Soft, breathable Eurotop cover, made from natural bamboo fiber.
  • Talalay latex and HD polyfoam yield responsive, pain relieving comfort.
  • 10 to 20 years limited warranty accompanied by a 90 day trial.
  • Customizable firmness.
  • Can be traded for different firmness if needed.

Cons

  • Slight offgassing within first day of unpacking.

The Ultimate Dreams mattress uses a bamboo knit EuroTop cover on top, which provides optimal softness and breathability. This is followed by a 3 inch layer of Talalay latex, so that the mattress molds itself to your physical structure, and quickly. The base consists of 8 inches of 2 lb./cu.ft. HD polyfoam, which adds crucial overall support for the entire body while also partially improving the bounciness.

The two likeable features of this product are how effectively it provides comfort and support (so much so that multiple users have reported satisfactory pressure point relief), and the fact that it does so while ensuring swift heat dissipation thanks to its breathable design.

The product comes with a 10 – 20 years limited warranty depending on the model, as well as a 90 day trial. You can also choose to customize the firmness at the time of purchase: if you do, you are contacted by a company rep who asks you a bunch of questions. If for some reason, the firmness level you get isn’t satisfactory, you can trade in your purchase for a model with different firmness.

This is a seemingly simplistic latex mattress that packs a lot of value – in terms of both pain relief and more – for its seemingly modest price tag, making it a reasonable consideration for hip / shoulder pain sufferers on a somewhat tight budget.

6. Layla Mattress

Highlights

  • Sizes Available: Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, California King
  • Thin 100% polyester cover: Thermo-Gel Finished Cover
  • Comfort Layer: Copper Infused Memory Foam (3”, soft side)
  • Middle Layer: Convoluted Foam Base (1”)
  • Support Layer: Copper Infused Memory Foam (1”, firm side)
  • Warranty / Return: Lifetime warranty / 120 day trial

Pros

  • Reasonable pricing for targeted arthritic pain relief and dual sided comfort.
  • Copper infused memory foam ‘promotes pain relief’ and enhances cooling.
  • Cooling gel infused cover for better thermal dissipation.
  • Dual firmness sides to suit side, back and stomach sleepers.
  • Lifetime warranty with 120 day risk free trial.

Cons

  • Soft side runs warm at night.

The Layla is something of a specialty mattress – in that it uses a unique copper infused memory foam comfort layer which, according to the manufacturer, optimizes cooling and promotes pain relief through enhancement of blood flow. For this reason, it is recommended for patients of arthritis, a condition that contributes to hip pain.

What makes it even more special is that it is dual sided: the ‘soft’ side is a 3” copper infused memory foam layer, whereas the ‘firm’ side is a 1” copper infused memory foam layer. In the middle is a 6” convoluted foam layer, with the egg crate formations facing the ‘soft’ side to enhance the sinking, hugging sensation.

The soft side works well for side sleepers because of the greater contouring it offers, while the firm side is recommended for back and stomach sleepers who don’t require that kind of plushness.

The mattress is wrapped in a cooling gel infused cover to promote thermal dissipation – but it appears that only the firm side lives up to the manufacturer’s claims. In fact, the soft side may be too warm if you’re a hot sleeper.

The product comes with a lifetime warranty – which doesn’t cover most cosmetic wear and tear, mind you – as well as a 120 day risk free trial.

NoteWhile copper has seen widespread use as a folk remedy for bodily aches for ages, recent studies have been unable to substantiate these claims. You may want to take this with a grain of salt.

Recommended for patients of arthritis, a condition that contributes to hip pain.

Mattresses For Hip And Shoulder Pain: A Buyers Guide

Getting a relaxing, rejuvenating sleep is an essential yet often overlooked requirement for a cheerful and productive day life, especially in the fast-track world of today. Getting your bed setup for such a healthy sleep requires specific knowledge, as well as expenditure of time and money.

But if you suffer from a condition that triggers pain in your shoulders and hips, it can be a far more critical problem – you need to create a bedding solution that addresses the cause of the pain you’re suffering, and this requires hunting for specific bedding gear (and boy is there a lot to go through).

This guide is supposed to help you do exactly that, but before digging into my take on the best mattress for hip and shoulder pain, let’s first discuss the usual suspects responsible for these conditions.

What Causes Hip Pain While Sleeping

An issue with the rotator cuff is the common cause of shoulder pain at night: the rotator cuff is a group of tendons and muscles that affix to the bones of your shoulder joint, enabling it to remain stable and move properly.

Pain in the rotator cuff, which can be experienced throughout the day, but particularly sharply during the night, is caused by the following conditions:

  • Tendonitis/bursitis
  • Calcific tendonitis
  • Rotator cuff tendinosis
  • Rotator cuff tears

Among these, the most prominent condition is rotator cuff tendinosis, characterized by the degradation of your rotator cuff due to chronic overuse. The resulting tear may be partial or full, and will lead to the irritation of the bursa that is present on the cuff.

Tendonitis is a superficially similar condition with symptoms including inflammation and micro-tears (“fraying”) of the tendon, which occur when your shoulder is placed under repeated and/or heavy stress due to athletic activity, bad posture (both when awake and asleep), or even remaining stationary in the same position for too long.

Getting adequate rest in the correct posture for your shoulder is an essential part of dealing with a bad rotator cuff, along with medication, physical therapy, and surgery.

Hip pain during the night can result from a number of specific medical conditions – pinning the cause down is a matter of where exactly the discomfort occurs, and how frequently during the night it happens:

Bursitis

This condition stems from the inflammation of the bursa (a fluid filled sac) between the hip bone and the soft tissue connecting it to your pelvis. The pain is characterized by localized, sharp discomfort that gradually spreads into a dull sensation covering the neighboring regions.

Bursitis pain can be experienced even during the day, but it is usually far more pronounced during nighttime when your posture is placing stress over the affected part for an extended period of time.

Sciatica

The sciatic nerve, which travels along your spine, can sometimes become irritated (usually because of a spinal problem, but also due to an injury to the pelvis). This irritation causes pain in the hip during the night (and also during the day).

Again, the posture you sleep in plays a major role in the occurrence of sciatic pain, and correcting your posture can help alleviate it, when combined with adequate physical therapy and/or medication.

Tendonitis

The tendons surrounding your hip bone may become inflamed because of intense physical activity. Furthermore, with age, tendons inherently lose part of their elasticity, and certain tendons will never be quite flexible regardless of how old you are. The irritation of these tendons i.e. tendonitis can result in nighttime hip pain.

Other symptoms include swelling in and around the affected area, redness, as well as difficulty in bending. While routine treatment involves physiotherapy, ice and heat application, and anti-inflammatory prescriptions, to minimize the chances of its occurrence at night, you must ensure minimal stress on the affected tendons.

Arthritis

While there are multiple flavors of arthritis that can lead to hip pain, the two most frequent offenders are rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis. The former is a result of your body carrying out an immune response on your own healthy joint tissue, whereas the latter either happens gradually on its own, or due to an injury or infection to your joint.

Symptoms of both include swelling, redness and stiffness of your hip joint, and the pain is usually tangible all day long. Medication and physical therapy are the usual treatments, but to minimize the pain during the night, you’ll need to ensure minimal stress on the affected joint.

The Common Denominator – Your Sleeping Position

While the shoulders and hips are two distinct parts of your body, it is evident that the conditions described above can all be aggravated (in some cases, even caused) when you sleep in an awkward position. The bad posture puts stress on the affected parts, leading to sudden as well as chronic pain.

In fact, complaints of hip and shoulder pain are more frequent among people who sleep on their sides – without going into much physiological intricacies, this stems from the fact that your musculoskeletal system is unable to maintain its proper alignment in this posture (the way it does when you’re sleeping on your back), resulting in undue stress on the pressure points.

However, changing your sleep posture – even if it is to alleviate pain – is easier said than done (I’m a side sleeper and no matter how much I commit to sleeping on my back, I always wake up with all my weight on my left shoulder!). The issue is compounded when you sleep on a firm, unyielding bed.

Fortunately, modern advancements in sleep technology have led to the development of mattresses that adjust their profile to accommodate all sleep postures, so that the musculoskeletal system can achieve its proper alignment regardless of how you prefer to sleep.

Best Type Of Mattress For Hip And Shoulder Pain

While there are a number of different mattresses out there (based off the materials and designs employed in their manufacture), the key trait you need to look for in a pain relieving / preventing mattress is adjustment / conformity. With that criteria, you are largely left with two options – memory foam and latex:

Memory Foam

Also known as viscoelastic foam, this is a usually artificially manufactured material found often in the comfort cores of modern mattresses – it hugs and cradles your body, matching your body’s contours (by responding differentially to your body heat and weight) so that ultimately, you end up with a neutral spine that minimizes the chance of pain.

While earlier generations of memory foam suffered from ventilation problems because of their unique closed cell structure, recent advancements have greatly reduced these issues, and also made mattresses comprising of this material more economically viable for consumers.

Latex

If the cradling soft support (or lingering heating concerns) of mainstream memory foam mattresses make you averse, latex foam mattresses offer a starkly different (in a good way) yet generally more expensive solution. While synthetic latex foam is also used in cheap mattresses, it isn’t what we’re discussing.

Natural latex foam (or at the very least, a natural/synthetic blend) is well known for combining softness on par with memory foam, with springiness that can be likened to innersprings. The result is a resilient, buoyant sleeping surface which offers superb pressure relief for any sleeping style.

Furthermore, natural latex has an open cell structure that promotes air flow on its own, so you’re able to enjoy the pressure relief without any hikes in your bed’s temperature.

Support Core

The best mattress for hip pain and shoulder pain, whether it uses memory foam or latex, must still have a reasonably deep support layer, so that it doesn’t have your body sink in all the way through (a frequent problem with cheaper mattresses) resulting in pain due to inadequate support for your pressure centers!

While a thicker layer of latex as the support core may do the trick on its own, many memory foam mattresses, by virtue of the material’s softness, need a firmer mechanism underneath such as polyurethane, or even innersprings. What you choose depends on the kind of firmness you want from your bed.

What If I Still Want An Innerspring?

Innerspring mattresses have been a staple in the American bedding industry for over a century, and many of us have grown up sleeping on the distinctly firm and spring surface they yield. It is therefore understandable if you wish for a pain relieving sleep solution that still incorporates innersprings at its core.

For consumers with such needs, there are hybrid mattress available that combine a latex or memory foam top layer with an innerspring bottom layer, offering both soft surface conformity and deeper springiness.

I’ll recommend sticking with pocketed coil mattresses for their superior conformity – these (arguably expensive) springs are individually encased to respond to the shape of your body quite similar to how latex and memory foam operate while also offering bouncy deep support.
