A camping hammock is one that is specifically designed to take camping and takes the place of a tent or other shelter means. Camping hammocks are best strung between two trees or poles, but can also be hung from the ceiling or even used with a stand.
- It is lightweight, usually in under two pounds with all of the gear needed. This helps lighten your hiking load.
- It is durable, made of a super strong, multi-stitched, nylon that can hold up to hundreds of pounds.
- They come with cool accessories, like bug nets and rain flies.
- They are easy to set up, with just a few additional pieces of gear, a couple of knots, and a couple of evenly spaced trees and you’ll have yourself your very own cocoon above the ground.
I feel like this is pretty much trial and error. A lot of them are made with similar design and with similar materials in similar fashions and come out to similar prices. The small details are difficult to notice until you take the time to get to know the style of one company’s hammock and decide what it is you do or do not like about it.
We can start with the basics:
Where are you going to be camping?
What is the weather going to be like?
Single or double - weight consideration.
The weight of the hammock itself. How much do you want to be carrying?
A durable material. Some are made with parachute material others are made from different grades of just nylon or blends.
When choosing the trees to pitch your hammock you’ll want to make sure they are within a certain distance to each other and also that your hammock is at certain length- this does not include the rope length. It is to make certain you’re able to lay the hammock flat enough to lay comfortably all night long.
As stated before, you don’t want to add even an ounce more to your pack than you have to. But you want to make sure you have enough backup equipment just in case, you don’t want your essential hammock gear to be unbearably heavy before adding in all the backup necessities.
Sure, marketing works and that is why the entire industry of consumerism of America is based on it, but the name brands are not always the best brands, a lot of times they are just the most expensive brands. Make sure you are satisfied with how much you are paying and what you are paying for. A lot of grassroots companies make really great products, have guarantees, and offer a fraction of the price that the big name companies sell with very similar products.
Camping gear is a little different from a lot of other products in that you should be able to use the heck out of them for quite a while and they should last, if they don’t last or if they malfunction you should be able to get your money back. Make sure the warranty includes a 100% guarantee, for how long, and under what circumstances.
Easy to clean and store
When the adventure is over, and it’s time to get back to the real world, you want an easy cleanup. Make sure your hammock is easy to clean and dry and will easily store in its pouch and keep until the next time you decide it’s time to get out and explore.
Some think you’d probably need to be an expert to handle this kind of equipment. Not true, because all experts were once novices at some point. Not to worry, each company we looked at will walk you through how to set up your hammock and if you need more, there are loads of resources from an outdoor enthusiast that are just dying to teach someone their ways.

Wise Owl started out as a small family company that continues to grow. Their reviews are phenomenal, price points are great, and the quality is right on target. Their hammock beds are made of a slightly different material than most but seem to be just as durable, soft, and breathable. All pitching hardware is included with each hammock, and bonus they are conscious about all their adventurers not leaving their permanent footprint by making certain their hardware is gentle on the trees but sturdy enough to keep you afloat.
This company makes certain to keep all their customers happy with a clear-cut warranty promising you’ll love their products or they will make it right. In the end, you’re going to be adding over 2 pounds to your pack, that’s quite an additional load weight, thus it may not be the best backpacking hammock, but the awesome durability and unique material blend may just be worth it for a quick camping trip.

Above all, Bear Butt has really impressed us. Not only do consumers love this company, their products, and their hammocks but it happens to shine just as bright for us as well. The company was started by a newlywed couple with big dreams of making their way honestly into a solid career.
They use a durable Nylon blend like other brands that promise to be durable and super lightweight. Bear Butt also states their hammock beds are weatherproof. The hammock setup gear is all included with each hammock purchase and still, with all of the gear the hammock is only going to add about a pound and a half to your pack, this makes it the best portable hammock on our list.
But being lightweight isn’t as impressive as how much the hammock holds, legally they can only say it holds up to 500 pounds, more than others we’ve seen. But it has been tested for… get this… 900 pounds! Unheard of! And how do they do it? We may never know.
Their products are extremely affordable and promise to always stay that way. The best part, their warranty is unlike any other we’ve ever seen, but always hope a warranty to be: no questions asked, no timelines or expirations if for any reason at all at any time, they will replace or refund the purchase.
- Extra durable
- Super affordable
- Lightweight even with all the gear
- Awesome guarantee/warranty aka promise
- American startup with honest roots
- Hardware included
- Lots of color options
- Can’t think of any! Even if there is a flaw, or you just don’t like it, they will replace the product or refund your money instantly.
- Warranty – 100% satisfaction guaranteed
- Weight – 1.5 pounds
- Height – 10 feet by 6.5 feet
- Material – 210T Nylon Parachute
Winners Outfitters is an international company with a large supply of products that promise 24/7 customer assistance when needed. We know little about their beginnings but consumers seem to really like their products and even more so their warranty when they don’t like their products.
This company states their double hammocks are the easiest to set up and take down and you clock it all in under three minutes. The hammocks are easy to use and easy to adjust depending on your terrain, resources (i.e. the trees around you) and your experience level. The hammock bed is soft, durable, strong and breathable and is rated up to 500 pounds of weight for up to two occupants.
This hammock comes with an attached stuff sack for not only the bed of the hammock but also the ropes and carabiners needed to pitch the hammock. All necessary equipment will add about a pound and a half to your sack. Overall they have a 100% satisfaction guarantee with super quick refunds if your expectations are not met.
- Super fast refunds
- Straps included
- Website askew, not managed well
- Not the small business other similar companies, boasts international business
The Eno Hammock is another winner we found. This is another small company turned big deal from two friends out of their garage in Florida to a national distributor out of North Carolina. This company promises quality and a while you’re supporting the benefits of a small, local company you won’t be sorry if something doesn’t go your way. They offer a two-year warranty for repair, replace, or refund. Some repairs are repaired for free for life, but if you’re really not happy they will replace or refund your product for up to two years.
Here we see yet another material blend, that promises durability and strength up to 400 pounds of weight while still being lightweight itself. However, the hanging hardware is sold separately and doesn’t come as part of the hammock purchase and while the hammock is a bit more pricey than other similar styles, it still is an affordable purchase. Like the other hammocks, this one comes with a stuff sack to easily store away your hammock bed.
- Mounting or hanging straps not included
- Hanging or mounting straps sold separately
- More expensive than similar styles from other brands
- Warranty – 100% lifetime no questions asked money back guarantee
- Weight – 1.3 pounds
- Height – 9.5 x 6.2 feet
- Material – 230 T Ripstop Nylon
Another small startup company turned successful, this New Mexico company was started by two friends who saw the need for a different point of view when it came to camping gear. Though we didn’t get to try this one out personally, we can definitely see how we missed out. Other consumers have a lot of great things to say about this company and its products and very little bad to say about it. Even if something does go wrong their customer service goes out of their way to make it right.
Their hammock is super strong and durable and extremely lightweight. All the hardware is included and they now offer upgraded straps that are even better than the ones they had before- easier to use and long lasting. They have an inventive trademark on their setup design for pitching your hammocks; it’s obvious they like to think outside the box.
- 500-pound weight limit
- No questions asked lifetime warranty
- All hardware included
- Hang Easy ™ design helps setup
- Not too much that we can find, and if we did, their warranty would make it all better
Who Wins the Roundup?
Normally this would be a difficult question to answer, and with products so similar in creation and design one may think it would be an impossible question to answer, but we have a clear winner with a close runner-up.
We have a deep respect for small businesses who like to work honestly and treat their customers with the deepest of admiration. The way it sounds, Nature’s Hangout could be this company, but because we actually got to hang out in the Bear Butt hammock, we just have to give them the first place for the best outdoor camping hammock for the quality, for the money, and for the overall support of a small honest business.
