The second layer measures six inches in height and it’s made with support foam that’s meant to give your body support and provide good spinal alignment. The top cover is made from polyester knit, stretching perfectly to cover the upper surface of the mattress. Touching the cover, you will feel how soft and cool it is, being further proof that the PacBed was designed to solve the body heat issues that arise when sleeping on an all-foam mattress.

At a first glance, there seem to be little differences between the Lite and the Original versions of the PacBed. But the minute we start to dissect the layers of the PacBed Original, you will notice the improvements. First off, this mattress measures a generous eleven inches in height, distributed amongst the two layers of foam that make up the product.

Above the mattress lies a soft knit cover, almost identical to the one found on the PacBed Lite. The only remarkable difference is that the Original model has twice the gram weight, being softer and more luxurious compared to its basic counterpart. Underneath the polyester cover lies a three-inch layer of gel-infused memory foam, with the same CoolRest technology that BedInABox uses in all the top layers of its mattresses. This memory foam acts both as a pressure reliever and a comfort layer, with an open cell structure and 3.25 lbs in density.

The support and base layer of this mattress measures eight inches in height and features what BedInABox calls Sure Align – a foam that’s designed to provide the sleeper with proper spinal alignment while distributing the overall weight across the mattress. This final layer has a density of 2.2 lbs and works together with the three-inch layer of CoolRest memory foam to cradle the sleeper’s body to the best of comfort.

The Azul mattress is a combination between the premium model delivered by BedInABox (Serenity) and their best-selling memory foam mattress (PacBed Original). The eleven inches of thickness are spread across three different foam layers, to combine support, pressure relief and contouring. Let’s start talking about the comfort layer. Measuring three inches in height, the comfort layer follows pretty much the same pattern as all the other BedInABox mattresses: the CoolRest gel-infused memory foam is here to contour the body and give comfort to sleepers who are often faced with pains caused by pressure points. Due to its 3.25 lbs in density, the mattress provides good motion transfer, as it can quickly return to its original shape. The open cell structure is present here as well, for better airflow.

Next, we have the three-inch transition layer, acting as both body support and barrier between the comfort layer above and the support layer below. The 1.8 lbs density of this layer provides the cushioning support of the memory foam. Last, but not least, there is a generous five-inch layer of support foam, which also acts as the base of the mattress, giving it its shape. The Sure Align support foam has a 2.2 lbs density, making it more durable compared to the average base layers of other types of foam mattresses.

As we progress through the different mattresses sold by BedInABox, there are noticeable improvements, including in the construction of the top cover. Compared to the lower-end models sold by BedInABox, this cover is made with CoolRest Adaptive phase-changing material. This means that it features microscopic capsules that are integrated inside the cover, for better temperature regulation. The cover works in tandem with the CoolRest memory foam that lies underneath it, for superior breathability and more comfort for the sleeper.

As we move on to the top of the ladder, we find the Tranquillium model, an eleven-inch mattress that’s firm enough to cater to the need of back and stomach sleepers, but with enough support to please some side sleepers as well. The cover of the mattress is made with Tencel, which is advertised as being the eco-friendly version of cotton. The cover itself is very pleasant and soft to the touch and has really superior moisture-wicking properties.

Moving on, we find a three-inch layer of gel-infused memory foam, a BedInABox signature for all its mattresses. If you’ve read this article so far, then you’ve probably deducted the presence of open cell structures and the ability to provide superior body contouring. The 3 lbs in density suggest that the top layer is not only durable but also capable of minimizing motion transfer and facilitate sleep movements.

The last layer is a generous eight-inch block made with high-density polyfoam. This prevents the top memory foam layer from sinking in too deep and gives the mattress its shape. It would have made sense to see a transition layer between these two blocks of foam, maybe in a 3-2-6 inch configuration. Because of its construction, the mattress is right at the border between soft and firm. Applying pressure on the top layer, you can really feel the softness of the gel memory foam, suggesting superior pressure relief for all kinds of sleepers.

The luxury model available from BedInABox is called Serenity, as it’s meant to induce a certain state of calm and relaxation from the moment you hear its name. Even if this is the most expensive mattress in the BedInABox line, it’s still considerably more affordable to some of the most luxurious memory foam mattresses that sometimes come with overwhelming prices.

The construction of the Serenity mattress is very interesting, as it’s only made with three layers (top cover included), but two of them have different construction blocks. No worries if it sounds, confusing, we’ll explain in a minute. The two-inch top cover is made with the phase-changing material we spoke of earlier. These capsules that are integrated in the layer are meant to regulate body temperature, to prevent people from feeling too hot in the summer and too cold in the winter. Since it features gel-infused quilting foam, comfort and pressure relief starts at the very top of the mattress.

Next, we have a three-inch layer of comfort foam, meant to relieve pressure points and provide comfort and support for the sleeper. This is something that BedInABox aims to achieve with all its mattresses because, even if the construction is different, it follows a similar pattern to meet the same goal. This three-inch layer is divided into one inch of CoolRest gel-infused memory foam and two inches of AirRest Adaptive foam. That means that the dual composition shoots two birds with one stone: it traps air inside the layer to provide better body support while cooling down your body as you sleep.

Moving on to the last layer, we find eight inches of support foam, divided as follows: a four-inch layer of soy-based foam that transitions between support and contouring; another four-inch layer of Sure Align support foam, to act as the base of the mattress, while distributing your weight across the surface of the mattress, for more durability.
