Cons

Another popular top-quality sheet set that won’t break the bank is the Mellanni Bed Sheet Set. Brushed microfiber is one of the bestselling fabrics for sheets because it’s velvety soft to the touch, and these sheets look fantastic every time you make your bed. They’re made of polyester, which has many benefits and only a few drawbacks. These sheets shouldn’t fade in color at all, thanks to its man-made fabric. Because of its colorfastness, whichever color you choose of the impressive 42 options available, your set of sheets is sure to look brand new every day. Polyester is also wrinkle and stain resistant, and the fabric isn’t susceptible to pilling.

The deep pockets of the fitted sheet are made to fit any mattress up to 16 inches thick. There’s elastic all the way around the bottom sheet, so it should be snug on your mattress. Although this sheet set is labeled as having an 1800 thread count, this logically isn’t possible in the traditional sense. While you can ignore that number, and be rest assured that this is indeed brushed microfiber, it’s going to be super soft on your skin. However, you may sleep hot with microfiber materials, making this a perfect companion for the chilly winter months.

3. Best Luxury Feel – Cosy House Collection Luxury Bed Sheets

Highlights

  • Sizes: Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, California King, Split King
  • Dimensions: 60 x 80″ (fitted, Queen); 105″ x 90″ (flat, Queen)
  • Material: Polyester
  • Colors: 32
  • Warranty: Lifetime

Pros

  • Wrinkle-free
  • Fits up to 16-inch thick mattresses
  • Fade resistant
  • Stain resistant
  • Lifetime warranty

Cons

  • May sleep hot
  • Not snug on thinner mattresses

Many people prefer the ultra-soft luxury feel of microfiber sheets, and the Cosy House Collection bed sheets fit that description. They’re made of polyester, so they come with several benefits. The man-made material resists stains, wrinkles and fading. Whichever color you choose from the selection of 32 should remain vibrant even after several washes. This fabric is also supremely soft thanks to the brushed microfibers, and these sheets should work with any budget.

The deep pockets are meant to fit a mattress up to 16 inches thick, so if you have a pillow top mattresses, or a mattress topper, these sheets should fit like a dream. However, thinner mattresses may not give you that snug fit, and the sheets may not stay in place because of this. In addition, polyester tends to not be breathable – even though it’s a lightweight fabric – so you might sleep a bit warmer with these sheets.

4. Best Value – HC Collection Bed Sheets Set

HC Collection fitted sheets set in original packaging

Highlights

  • Sizes: Twin, Full, Queen, King, California King
  • Dimensions: 60″ x 80″ (fitted, Queen); 102″ x 90″ (flat, Queen)
  • Material: Polyester
  • Colors: 13
  • Warranty: Lifetime

Pros

  • Wrinkle-free
  • Claims to fit up to 16-inch thick mattresses
  • Fade resistant
  • Fully elasticized fitted sheet
  • Silky feel

Cons

  • Very thin sheets
  • Some reports of tears and rips

When looking for super-soft microfiber sheets, you could find yourself lost in a sea of brands, but HC Collection is a tried and trusted high-quality bedding brand. Tens of thousands of people have purchased these sheets, and the brand gets top marks for offering a comfortable set of sheets that are wrinkle-resistant. After sleeping on these sheets for a few months, I can confidently say that they’re up there with the softest sheets I’ve ever slept on.

While these sheets tend to sleep a bit warm, a thin sheet is ideal when it’s warm outside to keep you cool throughout the night. It’s an added bonus if you’re typically a hot sleeper and need sheets that are extra breathable. There have been a few reports of tears and rips that come about soon after purchase and continued use, however I’m yet to experience this. The number of glowing reviews still outweigh these issues. You get a wide variety of colors to choose from – including classic neutrals that I of course opted for – and the sheets have resisted fading so far after several washes.

It’s important to highlight that HC Collection claims these sheets can fit any mattress up to 16 inches thick. However, when I placed the fitted sheet over my 15 inch mattress, it didn’t fully cover each corner. If you don’t need deep-pocket sheets and have a mattress of normal thickness, then this won’t be an issue for you – but it’s something to keep in mind if yours is a little thicker like mine.

5. Best Cotton – Brooklinen Classic Core Sheet Set

Highlights

  • Sizes: Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, Cal. King
  • Dimensions: 54″ x 75″ (fitted, Full); 98″ x 86″ (flat, Full)
  • Material: 100% long staple cotton
  • Colors: Up to 14 to choose from, including limited edition colors
  • Warranty: 1 year returns, 1 year additional warranty

Pros

  • Can easily fit up to 15-inch thick mattresses
  • High quality, durable cotton that gets softer after each wash
  • Wide variety of colors to choose from

Cons

  • Not as soft as the Brooklinen Luxe sheets
  • May start to pill over time

For those looking for an affordable set of top-quality cotton sheets, I highly recommend the Brooklinen Classic Core Sheet Set. There’s a reason Brooklinen is so well known in recent years, and particularly on social media. The Classic Core set is the perfect staple that you can depend on. They become softer after each wash (which can’t be said for all cotton sheets) and are super comfortable to sleep on.

My favorite thing about these sheets is that they don’t slip and slide off your mattress during the night, like some silky sheets do. The fitted sheet fit my 15-inch thick mattress perfectly, which is hard to find even with sheets that claim to have “deep-pockets”. I also slept on these sheets during the winter and never felt too cold or too warm. While there have been some reviews mentioning that they pill over time, I’m yet to see any signs of pilling (and I’ve washed them half a dozen times).

The color I chose is the pick of the bunch in my opinion – classic cream. I got sick of always option for white bed sheets, and the Brooklinen cream color is the perfect ivory shade to contrast with the rest of my bedding. You can also mix it up by going for stripes, checks or prints, and I always check the Limited Edition or Last Call section for any last minute deals. The Classic Core Sheet Set is one of my favorite affordable 100% cotton sets that I know will last me for years to come.

Do Affordable Sheets Have to be Scratchy and Bottom-of-the-Barrel?

Just because some linens are reasonably priced, it doesn’t mean they have to feel like sandpaper on your skin. There are certainly these sets out there, but you can avoid them by looking for certain language that manufacturers use to describe their sheets. For example, long-staple cotton is something to be on the lookout for, as these long fibers will create a softer sheet.

Thread count can be important, but it’s not the only feature you should factor into your decision. You could plunk down some cash for 1000 thread-count sheets, then discover after a few washes that they feel like the $20 sheets you bought at a big-box store. Some manufacturers are not totally transparent when it comes to thread count. It’s supposed to indicate how many threads there are per inch of fabric. If you’re using single-ply threads, that’s a helpful measurement. If you’re using double or triple-ply, like many budget manufacturers do, then those 600 thread-count sheets that you buy might actually be only 200 thread-count sheets.

If you want to buy bed linens based on thread count, avoid the crazy high thread counts with the $40 price tags – those are sure to be inflated counts. The sweet spot for thread count is about 300 to 600. If you’re looking for soft sheets, pick up a set that’s woven with a sateen weave around 400 to 600 thread count. For a crisper feel, choose products that have a percale weave and are closer to the 300-thread count mark. In fact, there are all sorts of different weaves and fabrics you can buy to suit your preferences, and surprisingly, they can still be affordable.

The Best Affordable Sheets May Not Be What You’d Expect

You might be surprised that there’s a set of bed linens out there that are exactly what you want and within your budget. Of course, they may not be the softest, or the most durable compared to higher-end sheet sets, but you can still find what you’re looking for. What features in bed sheets are on your must-have list?

Soft and Warm

If you prefer a super soft material that feels like thin velvet against your skin, and you want your sheets to keep you warm, then you want a sateen finish. Sateen is a weave made with a four-over, one-under weave. The result is a fabric that has a slight sheen to it, and is soft to the touch.

The only issue with sateen is that it’s less durable than most other types of sheets. Launder these sheets with care so they don’t wear out on you too soon.

Super Soft and Cozy

For the coziest linens out there, consider flannel. These sheets mimic the same feel and weight as a flannel shirt or those pyjamas you love for the winter time. Flannel is made to wick away moisture, but also keep you quite warm. These types of sheets are for the coldest nights, and they’re fuzzy soft.

You don’t have to go for the classic red and black lumberjack pattern; flannel comes in all sorts of prints, so they can be plain, colored or have whatever you print or pattern you like.

Wrinkle-free

To get the best-looking bed linens for your bed that are also super-soft to the touch, you’ll probably be satisfied with microfiber sheets. These aren’t made of a natural material, which is the reason they resist wrinkles. Once you pull these sheets out of the dryer, they look as good as the first day you pulled them out of their package. Microfiber sheets often resist pilling, and they have a color-fastness that’s much better than natural fibers.

Expect to have the softest linens, but also very little breathability. Microfiber sheets tend to run hot because there isn’t much space between the microfibers to allow air to flow, making them perfect for those cozy winter months.

Crisp and Cool

Hot-weather dwellers might sigh in frustration when it comes to finding the right sheets to keep you cool at night, but it could be because you’re not looking for the right features. Percale is a weave that has a classic over-under pattern, which allows air to flow in and out. These sheets aren’t soft, and they’re not meant to be. They have a matte finish and can sometimes be loud or crisp when you move around in bed.

These sheets are best if they’re made of 100% cotton and have no other materials added. They’re prone to be wrinkly, but will also be quite durable.

Luxurious and Shiny

If you love the look of shiny, silky sheets, you might want to look at the classic satin sheets. These are made of man-made fabric because actual silk sheets are going to be exorbitantly expensive. Satin has a very shiny top part, and they’re cool to the touch.

The biggest issue with satin sheets, though, is that they can be insulating. Though they’re cool when you first slip in between the sheets, they’re going to trap heat and you might end up sleeping hotter than with cotton sheets.

Conclusion

All of the sheets featured in our top 5 list are great value brands. You won’t have to spend hundreds of dollars for a comfortable sleep, and most of these sets are quite durable, so you likely won’t have to buy another set of sheets in only a couple of months’ time. There’s one set that gets high marks consistently, is a top-quality Amazon’s Choice product and is the best bang for your buck. The 100% Bamboo Sheets Set from Bedsure offers a super-soft feel thanks to its bamboo viscose fiber material and 250 thread count. If you’re looking for a great-value sheet set that also allows you to sleep cool if you’re typically a warm sleeper, then these could be the best affordable sheets for you.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much should I pay for good-quality sheets?

The sheet sets in this roundup fall at or below the $150 price point, which is a great benchmark to ensure you’re getting high-quality sheets to last many years, and so you’re not breaking the bank.

Do expensive sheets make a difference?

Some sheets might cost you an arm and a leg, but they also may boast a high thread count that may not equate to “high quality”. You can definitely get away with spending around $100 to $150 on a sheet set that feels luxurious and will hold up over time. Expensive sheets don’t always mean that they’re better than cheaper ones – pay attention to the materials used and what other customers have said after trying them out.

How many pairs of sheets should I own?

Three sets is a good number of sheets to have. Ideally, you’ll want an extra pair to put on your bed while your current ones are in the wash, and another set in your closet that’s ready to go. Your spare sheets may come in handy if you have guests staying over, in which case an affordable set will be your best bet.
