Additional Bonus Shipping Option

I’ve reviewed several mattress-in-a-box products and know that it’s important to have an idea of when it will be shipped. None have ever arrived late or damaged, but there have been times when I’ve stepped out of the house to find a mattress in my driveway when I get home. When you work with Avocado, however, they are very particular about arranging a time when you’ll be home. About a week before its arrival, a representative of Avocado’s shipping company gave me a call, and we worked out a time that best fit my schedule..

You also have the option for the shipper to come into your home and set the product for you. I decided to try this option to just to see how it worked. While I unboxed the product myself to show you how it works, I did enjoy not having to bring the mattress from my driveway into my house as they are typically at least 70 pounds. You’ll also notice that they come in a box the size of the mattress, so this isn’t your typical bed in a box. You’ll be required to sign a Proof of Pickup ticket, which guarantees that it won’t be dropped off when you aren’t home.

Avocado’s Mission

The Avocado mattress was designed in 2015 in Hoboken, NJ and is made by hand in California. It’s the goal of the company to provide non-toxic and organic materials at a price that the average consumer can afford. Their products are handcrafted in the USA without petroleum-based polyurethane foam, toxic flame retardants, or dangerous pesticides. Their mattresses are Greenguard Gold certified, which means the materials are tested by a third party for volatile organic compounds, formaldehyde, and phthalates.

A lot of time and effort went into the development of this product, and Avocado shows confidence in the end result. They offer a 100 night sleep trial, which means that you get more than three months to test out the product and determine if it’s going to be a viable long-term sleep solution. Your satisfaction is guaranteed and if you aren’t happy within the first 100 nights, Avocado will pick it up or work with you to arrange a verified charitable donation (as well as provide you with a full refund).

Firmness and Comfort

A firm mattress can be an excellent quality, especially if you prefer this type of product and/or carry a lot of weight. Personally, I prefer my mattresses on the plusher end, so this was a little firmer than what I’m used to. Initially, I found it to feel really hard. However, after a few nights I discovered that my body began to adjust. I even found that I had a reduction in pressure points that can lead to aches and pains. The point here is that the 100 night sleep trial is something you definitely want to take advantage of. If you purchase this product and don’t initially fall in love with the firmness or any other feature, it usually takes around 30 days to get used to a new mattress. So I would encourage you to keep this in mind and use the free trial. That’s what it’s there for!

Avocado Support

I was very impressed with the support offered by the Avocado mattress. While contour works to fill in the unique curves of your body, solid support works to ensure contour doesn’t compromise your spinal alignment.

The base unit comprises the bulk of this mattress, and it’s of very high quality. We’ll discuss this in further detail in our durability section. It’s immediately preceded by a medium-firm latex layer that does an excellent job transitioning from the plusher comfort layers. The final result? A sleep surface that provides excellent contour while still offering the support you need to keep your posture in check.

First Impression of the Cover

As soon as you lay on the product for the first time, you can tell that there’s just something different about this mattress. For starters, the hand-crafted tufts serve a bigger purpose than meets the eye. The 100% GOTS certified organic cotton cover textile secures the mattress layers firmly in place with wool yarn rosettes that hold the cotton ticking without the use of chemical adhesives. They act as anchors by pulling yarn through each layer of the mattress.

If you flip the mattress upside down, you’ll see the anchors where the end of the yarn is secured. It even improves durability as it prevents lumps and bumps from appearing over time. The Avocado cover features a poly-blend four-way stitch knit.

You can also see that the cover isn’t your typical pure-white product that can be difficult to keep clean. Instead, you’ll find a pleasant combination of a darker and lighter green hue. I think this amusingly reflects the eco-goals of the company.

While the product isn’t white, I’d still recommend you purchase a mattress protector as this can extend the life of your mattress. This product is produced using a breathable, organic cotton. Since it’s internationally recognized as GOTS-certified, you can count on the fact that the mattress’ natural qualities have been inspected from production and processing to manufacturing, packaging, labeling, exportation, and importation.

Construction and Quality Materials

In-home setup isn’t the only option that you have when you order. You’ll also have the opportunity to add a pillow-top for an additional $240-$500, depending on the size. If you have the money, I’d certainly recommend this (I did so myself). The additional 2-inches of 100% natural latex aides in point elasticity and this can be particularly helpful if you require additional pressure relief.

Now, let’s delve into the various layers that you’ll find within the cover of the Avocado mattress.

In the pillow top version we tested, we start with 1oz per-square-foot of 100% natural Joma® New Zealand Wool (Oeko-Tex certified). This certifies that the wool is free from allergenic dyes, pesticides, chlorinated phenols, heavy metals, formaldehyde, chloro-organic carriers and has a pH that’s not harmful to the skin. This natural fiber is breathable and helps transfer heat to regulate a proper sleeping temperature. It also prevents moisture, keeps your mattress smelling fresh, and acts as an all-natural fire barrier.

This is followed by four inches of eco-INSTITUT certified Natural Latex (the eco-INSTITUT evaluates the latex for an extensive list of chemicals including: formaldehyde, volatile organic compounds, heavy metals, pesticides, phthalates, and other potentially harmful chemicals), 100% natural Dunlop Latex. Avocado uses only tree-tapped and sustainable sources in their latex layers. Dunlop offers consistent, stable support, which is valuable for anyone suffering from nerve-related back pain.

Dunlop Firmness

In the Pillow Top model, the five inches of Dunlop latex are split in three sections (and they each feature different firmness levels): 2 inches of soft latex, 2 inches of medium latex in the comfort layers, and 1 inch of medium firm in the bottom core. While you may feel as though firmness can’t be gauged without laying on the product, you can get an idea by checking out the indentation load deflection. An ILD of 12 is typically on the very soft end while 50 is on the very hard end.

Using this as a gauge, the first two inches feature an indentation load deflection of between 14 to 19, which is on the soft end. The second two inches are more on a medium level with an ILD of between 26 to 31.

If you were to purchase the standard model without the pillow top, it would feature two inches of eco-INSTITUT® certified Natural Dunlop Latex 14 to 19 ILD (soft) and a denser 1-inch layer of 26 to 31 ILD (medium firm).

Innerspring Unit

The 8 inch innerspring unit comprises the bulk of this product, and is made in the US from recycled steel by Leggett & Platt. It’s a premium Quantum Edge® Elite Combi-Zone® unit, featuring three strategic zones and two reinforced perimeters.

Depending on the size, you’ll find varying numbers of coils as follows:

  • Twin: 756 support coils
  • Twin XL: 772 support coils
  • Full: 1016 support coils
  • Queen: 1130 support coils
  • King: 1414 support coils
  • California King: 1384 support coils

Their support coil systems is among the most advanced available. Since the coils float independently, you can benefit from improved airflow, motion transfer reduction, support, and spinal alignment.

Zoning for Your Comfort

There are three firmness comfort zones on this mattress and they are set in three strategically-positioned areas that provide superior support to the hips, back, and shoulders. The reason for this zoning is to support the three areas of the body that can be the most difficult to accommodate. This would include the pelvic area where we typically carry the most weight, the lumbar area which is typically thinner, and the shoulder area which is narrower and will sink in more easily due to the smaller surface area. The zoning of the Avocado mattress can make it an ideal product for anyone with extreme body weights or profiles. Therefore, the mattress is firmer in the middle to support the pelvis and lumbar and softer at the top and bottom for your hips and shoulders. This feature definitely makes the Avocado stand out from other mattresses.

One Final Layer

Beneath the coils lies one additional one-inch layer, and this is comprised of 100% Natural Dunlop Latex. This final base component provides sleepers with an added level of support as this layer is very firm.

How the Layers Work Together

You’ll want to know how responsive your mattress is. Those that are slow to respond tend to make things difficult when you move around at night. I’m pleased to report that this product bounces back quickly. When I pressed down on all of the layers as a combined unit, I found that it immediately resumes its original form once pressure is released. It’s easy to move around if you need to change positions and getting out of bed is a breeze.

What to Expect Without the Pillowtop Option

I chose the pillowtop option. However, depending on your needs and budget, you may very well decide this isn’t the best choice for you. I want to help ensure that you don’t compromise on quality as you may regret not spending the extra $300. So, here are the layers you’ll receive if you do decide to opt out of the pillowtop option:

  • 100% Organic GOTS certified cover
  • 1 oz per square foot 100% natural Joma® New Zealand Wool
  • 2 inches of 100% Natural Dunlop Latex, eco-INSTITUT certified
  • 8 inches innerspring unit, individually pocketed, 3 zones, 756-1414 coils
  • 1 inch of 100% Natural Dunlop Latex, eco-INSTITUT certified, medium firm

What the additional pillow top does is make the mattress softer. Without it, the overall firmness rating of the Avocado would be about a 6.5 out of a total 10. When you opt for the pillow top, you will decrease the firmness of your mattress with an entire point, which results in a firmness of 5.5.

The pillow top is a viable option for side sleepers that weight over 130 lbs. The firmer version of the mattress doesn’t provide all the contouring and cradling needed for heavyweight side sleeping, so having a plush top will certainly provide more comfort.

A Word on Durability

We typically use the density of a mattress to help us determine overall durability. However, Avocado does not use petroleum-based polyurethane foams. Since theirs is a natural mattress made with 100% natural latex, 100% natural Joma® New Zealand Wool, and 100% organic cotton, the density level doesn’t provide us with comparable results.

The good news is that natural products are well-known for their superior ability to stand the test of time. I have high expectations that I’ll be able to take advantage of this product for many years to come.

Good Option for Heavier Consumers

If you carry a lot of weight, there is a high likelihood that you’ve experienced limitations in the past when it comes to finding the best mattress. However, the firmness level of this product can feel different than what you may be used to. Furthermore, its strategic zoning can help relieve pressure points while keeping you equally comfortable in all of the different areas of your body.

The Three Zones in Action

We can actually get a look at the three comfort zones using our sinkage test. Using my kitchen broom, I applied my 130 pounds to an area of around nine by seven inches. When I stood at the bottom third of the mattress, I sunk in about six inches. However, I experienced a depression of five inches in the middle (where your lumbar region is located). So, it’s easy to see that the product is slightly firmer to accommodate your lumbar area. Finally, the sinkage was six inches on the top third of the product.

Edge Support

You may not ever think about it, but there’s a good chance you spend time sitting on the edge of your mattress. I know I have made it a habit to sit on the side of mine when I fold laundry, for example. Active couples should also take this aspect into consideration.

I’ve had the chance to review quite a few mattresses and the Avocado is my top contender when it comes to edge support. Since there is such a substantial layer of ergonomic support coils, this mattress has a high degree of edge support. Whether I sat in the middle or on the edge (where support is often compromised), I didn’t sink in very much. Furthermore, I never felt as though I might fall out of the bed when I laid on the edge. This mattress is resilient all the way out to the edges.

Motion Isolation

If you’ve ever had a sleeping partner, then you’re likely aware of how annoying it can be to have a bed with limited motion isolation. Whether your sleeping partner moves around a lot or tends to get out of bed in the middle of the night, it can be highly disruptive to sleep with the wrong mattress.

When we think of innersprings, we typically think of a bouncy bed that will cause a lot of movement whenever someone changes positions. However, since the coils are wrapped individually, you may be surprised by the Avocado mattress.

Using two 20 pound medicine balls, I tested this product to see just how well it performs. I placed one ball on one third of the mattress and dropped the other on the opposite third. To my surprise, there was minimal movement of the resting ball when the other all made contact with the mattress surface. Furthermore, the ball I dropped only bounced a few times before coming to rest. This mattress has far better motion isolation that you’d think. Definitely an unexpected strength of the product!

Temperature Regulation Features

Many don’t realize it, but thermoregulation (the body’s ability to distribute heat) is strongly linked to our sleep cycles. In most cases, a temperature of more than 75 and less than 54 degrees Fahrenheit can have a negative impact on your sleep quality. That’s why we test all of our products using thermal imaging technology.

Our body has the natural ability of adjusting its temperature throughout the day and night, storing and releasing heat whenever needed. If you sleep on a mattress that can’t work with you in a sense that it constantly traps heat and makes your skin suffocate to the point of sweating, then that mattress will never provide true level of comfort to help you sleep soundly throughout the night.

I laid on the product in a temperature-controlled environment of 64 degrees Fahrenheit. Upon rising, I started recording the mattress using my thermal imaging camera to see how long it took to return to room temperature. The Avocado mattress took 11 minutes. Of all the mattresses I’ve tried to date, the average time has been 11 minutes. So, I would say that this product features average heat transfer capabilities.

That said, I was able to sleep cool on the Avocado mattress. Now, I tend to sleep cool anyway. So you may have different results given your unique physical characteristics. However, due to its breathable organic cotton and innerspring layer, this product should offer the qualities that you need when it comes to sleeping cool (unless you sleep far hotter than the average person).

Smell and Offgassing

When you buy a new product that requires the use of chemicals in manufacturing, you typically experience the olfactory detection of volatile organic compounds. Put simply, you can smell the product. Like a ‘new car’ smell.

The good news is that the 100% Pure New Zealand Joma® Wool keeps the Avacado mattress smelling fresh. Upon opening the product, I didn’t notice a smell at all. I slept on it just a few hours after opening, and I found it to be fresh and accommodating.

There’s a lot of debate about whether inhaling chemical-imbued mattress smells is actually a potential health-threat or not. Whatever the case, some people don’t like the initial smell of a mattress and they have every right not to. There are also potential concerns of skin rubbing against materials and fabric that are filled with VOCs, so the Avocado is pretty safe bet in this category.

Slight Setback

One slight downside that may be a nuisance can be found in the handcrafted buttons on the cover. While detection was minimal, I did notice them as I slept on certain pressure points. One night I had to change positions when I could feel a button pressing into my shoulder. The discomfort was minimal, but I thought it was worth noting just in case you think that might be problem for you.

How Avocado Gives Back

When you receive your product, you’ll notice that it’s in a plain brown box that features minimal branding. While this does save the company money, they don’t keep the money for themselves. Instead, they do their part by contributing 1% of all revenues to like-minded nonprofits as members of 1% for the Planet.  You can feel good in knowing that your investment in a new mattress will have a positive impact on our planet.

The company is also 100% Carbon Neutral. They are taking action on Climate Change and fully embrace the “We Are Still In” movement in support of the Paris Climate Agreement. To this end, Avocado has offset the carbon footprint for its 175,000 sq. ft. factory in Los Angeles AND one full year of product shipments. It is supporting the CarbonFund.org offset reforestation projects in an effort to help sequester CO2.

Maintenance, Protection, Care and Warranty

Overall, I have found my Avocado mattress to be comfortable and capable of reducing pressure points. While it is a little firmer than what I am used to, this can be a great quality for anyone who suffers with aches and pains or carries more weight than average.

Although I did experience mild discomfort when certain pressure points made contact with the hand-crafted tufts, this is something that can be easily overcome if you decide to invest in a mattress topper. If you think this sounds like a product that will meet your needs, you definitely want to make sure it lasts as long as possible. There are a few things you can do to make sure you’re able to make the most of this quality product.

Pricing

It’s important to note that there’s typically an added investment required when you opt for natural products. These types of mattresses can run you several thousand dollars. However, thanks to their reduction in overhead from selling to consumers factory-direct, Avocado is able to keep costs low and pass on these savings on to you. Avocado owns its GOTS certified factory where they do 100% of our manufacturing. This allows them to provide honest pricing to customers and manage every step of the manufacturing process. Their latex farm, which they also own, is completely GOTS Certified. They have complete ownership over production and large parts of the supply chain to ensure high quality and safe products for both customers and suppliers.

The following price chart covers what you can expect to pay depending on the size. I would like to point out that these prices do not include the additional charges involved with the pillowtop and in-home setup options.

  • Twin- $899
  • Twin XL- $999
  • Full- $1,199
  • Queen- $1,399
  • King- $1,799
  • California King- $2,399

Financing as Low As 0%

The economy is rough and I understand that the pricey purchase of a quality mattress isn’t always something we’re prepared to do. While you can choose to purchase an inexpensive temporary solution, the durability of these products is typically low and you’ll soon find yourself back in the market for a sleep product.

The good news is that you don’t need $1,000 on hand right if you qualify. Avocado has partnered with Affirm®, so you can pay over a period of three, six, or 12 months with rates from 0-30% APR. At checkout, just select Affirm and enter some basic information for an instant loan assessment.

If you’re seriously considering the purchase of the Avocado mattress, I commend you for taking the time to fully research before making an investment. If you’ve read this far, obviously you understand the value in making an informed decision. Obviously, I’m quite fond of this product. Who We Recommend This Product For

The careful construction and layering of the Avocado mattress has rocketed this product to the top list amongst side sleepers. The excellent cushioning and quality fabrics show why this bed is brilliant, but that’s not the only reason to choose the Avocado. Here are a few other reasons to choose this remarkable product:

  • It’s a great mattress for people interested in organic bedding items. The Avocado mattress has received numerous environmental certifications, and is made with wool, organic cotton, natural latex, and coils made from upcycled steel.
  • You will rarely find a mattress that provides excellent support for heavy side sleepers, so that’s one extra reason why the Avocado is brilliant.
  • Those of you that share a bed with a partner will be impressed by how well the Avocado mattress can isolate motion. The innerspring layer and the superior edge support allow you to enjoy every square inch of the mattress without ever having to worry about disturbing your partner’s sleep.

Our Final Verdict

I have tested quite a few sleep products, and I have to say that this is the first that offered so much protection during delivery. I also found this to be the only mattress that offers convenient side handles to help you move it around. I was particularly impressed with the zoning featured to help accommodate the pelvic, lumbar, and shoulder areas. This has already helped me wake up without annoying aches and pains that sometimes develop from sleeping in the wrong position.

I think this is a great product for those who carry a lot of weight and have trouble finding a product that offers them the level of comfort and support they need. Furthermore, it’s a great investment for anyone who wants to decrease the time span in between mattress purchases as natural products typically feature high durability. I hope this information helps you make an informed decision. However, if there’s anything I left out, I strongly encourage you to leave your questions or comments below. We strive to leave no stone unturned when it comes to your quest for the best mattress, and will get back with you promptly with an answer you can count on.
