Finding a quality mattress online requires you to do your research, and that’s why I’ve performed a variety of tests to help walk you through the important factors such as firmness, motion isolation, and cooling properties of this product.

Companies that are able to develop and maintain a favorable reputation typically are able to do so because they deliver a quality product or service, and Saatva is quickly gaining momentum in the online mattress industry. Adjustable Base Option

I also received the Saatva adjustable base to go with my Zenhaven mattress. Traditional sleep systems can make it difficult for the heart to properly distribute blood throughout the body. They can also make it hard for you to sleep ergonomically. However, adjustable bases allow for even distribution of pressure over the entire sleeping surface. This product can be added to your order for an additional $1,199 – $2,498 depending on the size. Just a few features you can enjoy with this addition include:

A Look at the Zenhaven Cover

Starting at the top, you’ll find the organic cotton cover. This cover is very soft, and it has a flame-retardant barrier beneath made of 100 percent organic New Zealand wool. This can prove to help increase breathability and promote moisture-wicking properties. Together, the cover and wool barrier comprise one inch of the total 10 inch thickness. You’ll also notice the very nice sewn-on custom embroidered label. Next, let’s take a look inside the cover.

100% American Talalay Latex

Natural mattresses offer a number of unique benefits. Aside from being environmentally friendly, they also reduce the use of chemicals and are typically more repellent to dust, mites, and mold. Many mattresses utilize various types of foam and other materials to make up the interior of the mattress. This can help drive down costs as some materials may not be as expensive as others.

Zenhaven allows you to take advantage of durable American Talalay latex at every level of the mattress split up into four separate layers. The top and bottom layers are each one and a half inches thick while the two middle layers are each three inches thick. Zenhaven’s latex comfort layers feature a proprietary 5-zone design, and it’s built to provide firmer support in the right areas in order to most efficiently align the spine. Since the base layers aren’t made of petroleum-based foam or other synthetic materials, you can expect long-lasting support.

While Zenhaven doesn’t share their blending combinations for proprietary reasons, they do manufacture the product by varying the pinholes you find in latex in ways that create five distinct indentation load deflection zones. This allows you firmer support in the areas where your shoulder and torso will rest in order to reduce painful pressure points as well as more effectively align the spine.

Firmness Options Just a Mattress Flip Away

One of the biggest challenges when shopping online for a mattress is making the right decision on your firmness. When you choose Zenhaven, you have the option to enjoy their luxury plush or gentle firm options. However, unlike many products, you aren’t forced to choose upon checkout. This is because, due to the way this product is constructed, you can take advantage of both on the same product. All you have to do is flip the mattress. The sewn-on custom embroidered labels indicate which side is which for your convenience.

I like a plusher product, but firm could be helpful for those who carry a lot of weight or who prefer to sleep on their stomachs. Eighty percent of Zenhaven customers prefer the plush side. For me, it offered that softness I enjoy while still providing great support. The gentle firm side is 18 percent firmer. This is achieved through the two middle layers of latex.

Zenhaven Sinkage Test and Edge Support

I tested the sinkage on both firmness settings of the Zenhaven mattress by applying my 130 pounds of weight to an area of around 9 by 7 inches, and there was a one-inch difference with the plush side sinking in 7 inches and the firm side 6 inches.

In other areas, I tested the sinkage that results as I applied my weight on the edge with my knees close to the side. Sinkage was pretty low. However, on both sides, I sunk in much more when I scooted close to the edge. I did sink in a little bit more on the plush side. Laying on the edge, you can see that I was pretty well supported on both the plush and firm setting. Overall, edge support is relatively average for an all-latex product.

Minimal Offgassing

When many products are manufactured, volatile organic compounds are released, and this results in that “new-car” smell you experience with products like cars, shoes, and mattresses. However, when my mattress was set up, I didn’t notice any smell at all, and this is attributed to the use of the Talalay latex. I was able to use it the first night I had it without being bothered with offgassing.

Support and Comfort

I took time to experiment with sleeping on both firmness levels with the Zenhaven mattress, and I enjoyed the ability to choose the comfort setting that works best for the individual. I personally prefer a softer product, but the firm setting offered that increase in support that can be a good option for those who carry more weight.

While we’re unable to report on the indentation load deflection of this product since this information remains proprietary, I can say that I was able to move around easily on both firmness settings and felt well-supported.

Zenhaven Motion Transfer Reduction

We always like to cover motion transfer. This is a big deal when you have a sleeping partner. In the wrong mattress, every little move can be irritating and disruptive. To demonstrate motion isolation, I used two 20 pound medicine balls.

First, I dropped one to demonstrate the bounce. The ball quickly settled itself in when I dropped it from eye level. I then moved it aside and dropped the other ball over on the opposite side. The mattress did a great job reducing the impact the dropped ball had on the resting ball. I then dropped it even closer to the resting ball. Each time, the resting ball wasn’t significantly disturbed. I think this could be a great product for sleep partners. Not only is motion isolation high, but you and your partner can also choose the best firmness for your needs.

Temperature Regulation

Sleeping cool is something that’s very important in order to ensure your body is able to thoroughly rejuvenate. Latex, in general, is typically able to breathe well, and this can be largely attributed to the fact that it has an open cell structure that circulates air easily. Combined with the cotton cover, I had no trouble with sleeping hot as I often did on my traditional memory foam mattress.

To put it to the test, I laid on the mattress in a room temperature of 64 degrees Fahrenheit for a period of 30 minutes. On average, it has taken the mattresses I have tried out around 10 minutes to cool off. Zenhaven was able to get back down to room temperature in 6 ½ minutes, so I think Zenhaven did a pretty good job at combining the right materials to help this product breathe well.

Durability Expectations

We typically take a moment to tell you the densities of the various layers of mattress products to help you make an educated determination of durability expectations. However, when it comes to latex, densities aren’t necessary. Consumers can rest assured that latex is one of the most durable materials in the industry. Since Zenhaven is produced using 100% Talalay latex at every layer, you can expect this product to be one that lasts. It’s also unlikely that your Zenhaven will develop body impressions over time since the integrity and buoyancy of the latex does not allow for this to occur.

120-Day Home Trial

Zenhaven understands that you aren’t able to lay on the mattress before you purchase. That’s why they offer you a 120-day home trial. The trial begins on the date of delivery, and, if you are not satisfied with your product for any reason, Zenhaven will arrange to have the mattress picked up and refund all your money excluding the original delivery charge. There are no restocking fees or pickup charges included.

Non-Commissioned Customer Service

I’ve worked in the telemarketing industry, and customer service agents are often pushed very hard to strongly lead customers into a sale. In many cases, the paycheck of the agent is at stake as they make money on commissions. Difficult to Move the Product

All-latex products don’t stand up when you pick them up to move them. Rather, they tend to fall in on themselves. This is completely normal as I have experienced an all-Dunlop latex product in the past. The Zenhaven is also pretty heavy. Therefore, if you need to move it or want to flip it to enjoy the other firmness setting, you should plan to have someone available to help out. I was able to flip mine on my own, but I did work up a sweat!
