Camping has gained a lot of popularity over the past few decades as urbanization has grown, but our comfort accustomed bodies require some concessions to enjoy it fully – camping air mattresses are one of them.

It is impossible for most people to sleep on the hard ground, caveman style, especially those who are past their youthful years and suffer from joint or back pain.

Camping air mattresses ensure that you are well rested throughout your journey, so you’re able to trek and explore to your fullest while you’re up – after all, camping is all about getting close to nature, and you won’t be able to do that well with a sore back! While this page is geared towards camping air beds, you’ll find air mattresses for every day use here.

Choosing A Camping Air Mattress – Buying Tips

You’ll need to carefully consider your requirements and options before deciding on a camping air bed:

Heavier or Lighter?

Camping air mattresses come either as heavy or light, and this is because of the materials used in their construction. If comfort is your chief priority, a heavier bed is recommended because it will be made of a thicker, more comfortable material that will also last you longer. These mattresses work well for people who camp close to their homes, or those who have kids.
But if you’re the type of camper for whom the main goal is hiking, trekking or rock climbing rather than sleeping in a tent, you should stick with a lighter weight air bed, which enhances portability and convenience at the cost of durability. This does not mean that the mattress will be very flimsy or damage prone, just that you can’t have kids jumping on it.

Hand/foot Pump or Electric Pump?

An electric pump mattress will be fine if your camping spot is close to where you park the car. If however, you have to walk a long distance to reach the camping spot, the bulkier electric pump will make things difficult for you so it is best to choose a mattress that comes with a hand/foot pump.
Remember that you can always buy an electric pump later on – they come with either DC or AC plugins. A DC electric pump will draw power from your car’s 12V outlet whereas an AC electric pump will require a generator or a wall outlet.
Some air beds will come with a pump built in and is run off of a pair of 4D batteries. This is ideal for times when you want the luxury of an easily inflatable mattress and have no access to outlet power or your vehicle outlet
Very lightweight and easy to handle. This is ideal for long distance treks and hikes. Not your most comfortable air mattress but better than the cold hard ground.

If you have a small tent that doesn’t have room for a queen size air bed then obviously trying to fit a queen size air mattress in your tent is going to bulge out the sides and leave no room for you to walk around your tent or store other supplies. Always think about the size of the air bed in relation to where you’ll be placing it.

There are a number of popular brands of camping air mattresses out there, but going by brand name alone, as many experts suggest, can result in a poor choice. User reviews paint a truer picture of the camping air bed’s performance and durability, and you should consult them before you decide on an air mattress. Take a look at our comparison charts and read our reviews to find the best camping air mattress. We cover the pros and cons of each mattress, scour and compile user reviews to make the best recommendations depending on what type of camper you are.

There are camping air bed brands to cater to every budget, be it low, moderate or high. What you really need to understand is that low cost normally means fewer convenient features and less durability, but it can be advantageous in certain circumstances. For example, you may have already purchased an electric pump, and you don’t want to spend extra money on a costly air mattress that comes with its own – you have the option of purchasing a cheap camping air mattress that doesn’t have its own pump to save cash and put your existing electric pump to good use!

Our Top Pick for a Camping Air Bed

  • ComfortCoil technology provides excellent support and comfort
  • Durable, waterproof material
  • Built in air pump for fast inflation
  • Flocked design keeps bedding in place

  • Pump noise
  • Some PVC stretching
  • Doesn’t work with standard sized sheets

most comfortable camping air mattress

The SoundAsleep brand prides itself in putting quality and customer comfort above everything else, and their Dream Series Air Mattress certainly lives up to that standard. Featuring their patented ComfortCoil Technology that utilizes 40 air coils, it provides exceptionally good comfort and support. ComfortCoil also ensures that the air bed remains inflated and firm throughout the night as you rest after a hard camping day. To make things even better, this air mattress is made in ‘double height’ form factor to ensure it is easy to get in and out of, which is pretty uncommon in the market. As far as durability is concerned, this air mattress has a waterproof, extra thick flocked top that adds to its comfort, besides making it durable. The material it is made from is multilayer and puncture resistant. The high capacity pump which comes with this air mattress is extremely convenient, in that you don’t have to lug around an extra piece of hardware as you go camping. It’s pump inflates the mattress in just four minutes. To make things even easier for you, this mattress comes with its own carry bag, and is available in multiple sizes. As per consumer reviews, this is one of the most popular camping air mattresses around at the moment, with only minor complaints about pump noise, initial PVC stretching and non-compatibility with standard sheets.

People that want the utmost in comfort and to sleep like they do when they are at home.

Best Lightweight Camping Air Bed Winner

  • Small form factor, highly portable
  • Single seam minimizes leaks
  • Eco-friendly TPU material

  • Close to ground

lightweight inflatable camping mattress

The Lightspeed Outdoors mattress does exactly what its name implies – give you a fast, no-nonsense portable sleeping solution. But it does so while also incorporating a patented pressure management mechanism as well as a stabilizer system to give you total control of its comfort level. With its 192 separate connectors hooked to the pressure management system, it allows you to set it up exactly as needed. Even better is the fact that it has just one seam running through it which minimizes the risk of leaks. The air bed is also an eco-friendly option since it is made from TPU, and inflates easily with its own DC electric pump. When not in use, it rolls up into a compact shape that can easily be stored / transported. All in all, this is an excellent air mattress choice for campers whose primary focus is travelling / hiking / outdoor activities instead of sleeping.

Best Suited For

Hiker/traveller types of campers who can’t carry a fancy camping mattress around and are only looking for a reasonably comfortable yet highly portable sleeping solution.

Best Queen Size Camping Air Mattress Winner

  • Durable, puncture resistant material
  • Headboard feature for extra support

  • Sleeping surface is a bit slippery

most comfortable camping air mattress

The AeroBed Queen 18’’ Double Height air mattress has been designed for quick and easy use. With its built in AC pump to ensure rapid inflation and its control wand that allows you to adjust its comfort level exactly as you need, it sets out to make things as easy for you as possible. Easy going doesn’t mean less durable however, since this mattress combines a tough base with puncture resistant material to ensure that it withstands the rough treatment of the outdoors. In spite of being puncture resistant, the material is breathable so your sleep isn’t compromised. The durability makes it a bit more expensive but it is definitely worth the extra investment, even though it is slightly offset by the somewhat slippery nature of the sleeping surface. Also keep in mind that although the sleeping surface is tough, its sides are still exposed to sharp objects and pet claws. Another standout feature of this mattress is its integrated headboard. You can inflate and deflate it at will, separate from the main unit. Combined with its double height, this air bed shows that AeroBed has gone to great lengths to ensure that your outdoor sleeping experience is as close to indoors as possible.

Best Suited For

Those who have moderate to large camping space and want to enjoy the comfort and convenience of an indoor bed.

Best Raised Air Mattress For Camping Winner

  • Elevated detachable cot bed provides security, longevity and convenience.
  • Can be used as a proper indoor bed and an outdoor mattress.

  • Periodic refills required for extended use.

The QueenCot is a true multipurpose air bed that can serve as both an excellent camping bed and as an indoor makeshift bed. With its detachable elevated cot, this air bed will give you the feel of a real bed, and also the support (600 pounds is the limit). It even comes fitted with side tables to let you put your belongings such as smartphone, clock, spectacles or a book, which is the most convenience we’ve seen in a camping air mattress. The raised cot frame makes it safer from cuts and leaks from the sides, making it one of the longest lasting products in the market. Campers who feel insecure while sleeping on conventional low mattresses will find this option safe, dependable and damp free. This mattress can easily take the weight of two adults but will require periodic refills. And if you intend to go out on cold nights… this air mattress is great because it doesn’t come into contact with the cold ground. Remember that the cot frame will be a nuisance for longer camping trips – but you can always remove it and take just the mattress.

Best Suited For

This mattress is ideal for every kind of camper thanks to its unique structure, and will also serve as a decent emergency indoor bed for guests.

Its main selling point is the fact that it inflates on its own, and can easily be folded into a small shape to be carried wherever your camping adventure takes you. You can use it as an added layer of insulation on your tent floor or as a sleeping mattress in its own right, and with its considerable length, it supports users as tall as 6’ 4’’!

Intex is known for providing extra features you would see in a higher priced option all while keeping the price to a very affordable level. This mattress comes with 2 pillows, and a double quick handpump and is rated at a capacity of 600lbs . While it might not be as comfortable as the Sound Asleep model it comes at a price that more than makes up for it. None of the comfortable mattresses can be inflated at a campsite – unless you have a generator. You are reviewing camping mattresses – yet all of them require a 110 outlet. right….

    • Frank Apodaca

Actually 2 of them are 4d battery pumps, one is a hand-pump, and another is self inflating. So only 2 of them require a 110 volt outlet. A lot of campsites have outlets. So really… this is a well rounded list. Some for hiking, some for camping low to the ground and some trying to replicate sleeping at home. Is there a make you’d like to recommend or any you’d like us to review?

      • Sean

Yes, and I also have 110V outlet in my vehicle, so all of these are viable for me. Thanks for the review. very helpful!

      • katelyn

        which are 4D battery pumps??

        • Frank Apodaca

          Hey Katelyn,

It’s listed in our table comparison. The Lightspeed and the Coleman.

  2. Leah

I could use a raised cot for car camping, but the base depicted on this page looks like it could easily tear or severely wear a fabric tent floor, given shifting and so on. I need to minimize that chance. Any recommendations would be much appreciated!

    • Frank Apodaca

If you are looking for an air mattress for car camping, they actually make air mattresses specifically for it. Check them out here.

    • Emily

Use a moving blanket under it. We line the bottom of our tent so our dogs or the pack and play dont tear the floor.

  3. Vee

I noticed that you have not included any reviews for Aerobeds, which are considered one of the better quality air mattresses on the market. Is there some reason why you did not review this product?

    • Frank Apodaca

Hey Vee, We’re looking at getting some Aerobed products for testing in the future. Thanks for reaching out.

  4. Ale

Hi. Do you know which a good air mattress to sleep in an SUV Chevrolet Suburban comfortably for the weekend without hurting your back?
    Thank you!

  5. Linda

Looking for an air mattress to go ON TOP of a hideabed mattress for someone who has bad back and will be staying in our home for 3 weeks. Have any ideas? Don’t want anything that is big bulky in our small apartment but they have had back surgery and need something comfortable. thanks
